Cerebral abscess formation is a serious and life-threatening clinical entity, secondary to contiguous spread, hematogenous dissemination or direct inoculation. We present the case of a 61-year-old woman with a recent diagnosis of a locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus who was diagnosed with a brainstem abscess. In literature we only found three cases reporting cerebral abscess formation in patients with esophageal carcinoma.

Background: Despite the fact that emergency midline laparotomy is a risk factor for an incisional hernia, active research on hernia prevention in emergency settings is lacking. Different kinds of meshes and mesh positions have been studied in elective abdominal surgery, but no randomized controlled trials in emergency settings have been published thus far.
Method: The PREEMER trial (registration number NCT04311788) is a multicentre, patient- and assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial to be conducted in six hospitals in Finland.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are rare soft tissue neoplasms with an uncertain biological behavior, derived from fibroblastic and myofibroblastic cells. In rare cases, a peculiar epithelioid phenotypic variant of this tumor is encountered, named epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma (EIMS). EIMS has overlapping features with inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor but has been correlated with a more aggressive clinical course, a characteristic nuclear membrane or perinuclear anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) immunostaining pattern and a very specific RANBP2-ALK fusion.

Practitioners in the field of voice are often faced with patients who are 'dysphonic', but who do not have identifiable abnormalities of the vocal tract structures or any neural or hormonal alteration affecting the phonatory function. For lack of better nomenclature describing the origin of the disorder, this group of patients has been labeled as having 'non-organic' or 'functional' dysphonia. 'Non-organic' only states what the dysphonia is not, and 'functional' does not have any etiological implication.
