The world population is aging. Comprehensive Geriatric assessment (CGA) has been proven to improve the well-being of older adults. However, evidence suggests not all clinicians implement these recommendations in their practice; nor do all patients adhere to them.

Background: The phase angle (PhA) in bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) reflects the cell membrane integrity or body fluid equilibrium. We examined how the PhA aligns with previously known markers of acute heart failure (HF) and assessed its value as a screening tool.

Methods: PhA was measured in 50 patients with HF and 20 non-HF controls along with the edema index (EI), another BIA parameter suggestive of edema.

PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were systematically searched for published articles comparing macular edema in patients with triamcinolone acetonide in different administration.

Clinical and economic burden of varicella in pediatric patients hospitalized in four institutions in Guatemala.

Varicella presents a public health challenge in Guatemala, with limited evidence regarding its impact; vaccine is currently absent from the national immunization program. Generating local data on the economic and health burden can support immunization policies. This study describes the use of hospital resources, costs of care, clinical and demographic characteristics, and complications in children with varicella.

Objective: This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial aimed to evaluate whether prolonged noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation improves body balance in patients with vestibulopathy.

Materials And Methods: This trial was registered in the Japan Pharmaceutical Information Center Clinical Trials Information registry (jRCT1080224083). Subjects were 20- to 85-year-old patients who had been unsteady for more than one year and whose symptoms had persisted despite more than six months of rehabilitation.

Our study assessed the prevalence and determinants of Catastrophic Healthcare Expenditure (CHE) experienced by households in Lagos, Nigeria.

Methods: A descriptive community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted on 2492 households in Lagos from December 2022 to March 2023 in 4 Local Government Areas (LGAs) using a multistage sampling technique.

Prognostic value of composite inflammatory markers in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A retrospective cohort study based on the MIMIC-IV database.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease, and inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of COPD. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between systemic immune inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI),pan-immune inflammation value (PIV), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and all-cause mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and to evaluate the effect of composite inflammatory markers on the prognosis of COPD patients. We obtained data on COPD patients from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC) -IV database and divided patients into four groups based on quartiles of baseline levels of inflammatory markers, The primary outcomes were in-hospital and ICU mortality.

Impact of COVID-19 vaccination on hospitalization, hospital utilization and expenditure for COVID-19: A retrospective cohort analysis of a South African private health insured population.

This study quantifies the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on hospitalization for COVID-19 infection in a South African private health insurance population. This retrospective cohort study is based on the analysis of demographic and claims records for 550,332 individuals belonging to two health insurance funds between 1 March 2020 and 31 December 2022. A Cox Proportional Hazards model was used to estimate the impact of vaccination (non-vaccinated, partly vaccinated, fully vaccinated) on COVID-19 hospitalization risk; and zero-inflated negative binomial models were used to estimate the impact of vaccination on hospital utilization and hospital expenditure for COVID-19 infection, with adjustments for age, sex, comorbidities and province of residence.

Objectives: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) significantly deteriorates patients' quality of life (QOL). This study examined the dynamic interplay of factors that influence QOL in patients with T2DM, utilizing concepts from positive psychology and intrinsic mechanisms, to lay the groundwork for improving patient outcomes. Improving self-management behaviors is essential for effective disease management.

Background: University students in Saudi Arabia are embracing some of the negative traits of the fast-paced modern lifestyle, typified by unhealthy eating, low physical activity, and poor sleep habits that may increase their risk for poor health. Health and holistic well-being at the population level are among the priorities of the 2030 vision of a vibrant society in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The current study thus aims at determining the prevalence and predictive factors of Suboptimal Health Status (SHS) among university students.

Traumatic Anterior Dislocation of the Sacrococcygeal Joint Complicated by Defecatory Dysfunction: A Case Report.

Case: We report a case of coccygeal dislocation complicated by defecatory dysfunction and discuss its treatment and mechanisms. A 58-year-old man was presented with coccygeal pain and defecatory dysfunction after sustaining an injury from a 1-m fall. Following diagnosis, a combined approach involving surgical treatment and physiotherapy was adopted, resulting in early symptom improvement and favorable long-term outcomes.

Effects of Cinnamomum zeylanicum (Ceylon cinnamon) extract on lipid profile, glucose levels and its safety in adults: A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial.

Background: Cinnamon has been studied as a possible way to control blood glucose and serum cholesterol levels. However, there are no well-conducted randomized controlled trials that can accurately measure the lipid and glucose-lowering effects of Cinnamomum zeylanicum (C. zeylanicum) extract.

Background: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) has a significant impact on public health and healthcare expenditures in the United States (US).

Methods: We used data from the CDC WONDER database from 1999-2020 to identify trends in the IHD-related mortality of patients ≥ 75 years in the US. AAMRs per 100,000 population and APC were calculated and categorized by year, sex, race, and geographic divisions.

Psychometric validation of the Cystic Fibrosis Impact Questionnaire (CF-IQ): A patient-reported outcome assessing impacts of cystic fibrosis.

The Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Impact Questionnaire (CF-IQ) was qualitatively developed to assess the impact of CF in the context of treatment advancements and increased longevity. This study reports the CF-IQ validation. In this noninterventional validation study, people with CF completed the 40-item CF-IQ and validating patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) via electronic diaries at enrollment (baseline) and at the 4-week follow-up.

Cross- analyzing the opinions and experiences of nurses, physiotherapists, dentists, midwives, and pharmacists with respect to addictive disorder screening in primary care: A qualitative study.

Early addiction disorders screening is recommended in primary care. The goal of health system reform is to include allied health professionals in this screening. The appropriation of their new role has not yet been explored.

Successful Healing After Minimally Invasive Subtalar Fusion Following Comminuted Open Calcaneus Fracture: A Case Report.

Case: A 51-year-old male polytrauma patient presented with bilateral calcaneus fractures after a fall. This report describes treatment of his right comminuted Sanders IV calcaneus fracture with percutaneous open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) primary subtalar fusion to restore alignment and preserve soft tissue.

Conclusion: Unlike traditional open approaches, which are prone to wound complications due to larger incisions, our approach of maintaining fracture alignment during joint preparation using an MIS burr for acute posttrauma subtalar arthrodesis and percutaneous ORIF appears to have reduced these risks, resulting in successful radiological healing and functional recovery at 1-year follow-up.

The evolution of the spatiotemporal relationship between urban economic growth and health resources within the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration provides an important context for understanding the regional development dynamics in China. Previous studies focused on equity in health-resource allocation and service efficiency, often overlooking the allometric growth relationships between health resources and economic variables. This study employs an allometric growth model to elucidate the changing interactions between the number of medical beds, doctors, and urban economic indicators in the Yangtze River Delta region from 2009 to 2022.

Chronic Patellar Tendon Rupture: Choice Between Two Allograft Reconstruction Techniques: A Case Report.

Case: In this article, we present 2 cases of neglected patellar tendon rupture. One was treated using an Achilles tendon allograft, and the other with a patellar tendon-bone allograft. Both methods allowed for early range of motion and resulted in good functional outcomes with a 1-year follow-up period.

High-flow nasal cannula for pre- and apneic oxygenation during rapid sequence induction intubation in emergency surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Rapid sequence induction intubation (RSII) is commonly used in emergency surgeries for patients at high risk of aspiration. However, these patients are more susceptible to hypoxemia during the RSII process.
