Background And Aims: Patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) often have malnutrition (MN), which can be associated with decompensation, infection, and death. The aims were to determine: the prevalence of MN in patients with LC and ascites, its impact on mortality, and the relationship between MN and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP).
Methods: Nutritional status (NS) was analysed in cirrhotic patients, experiencing their first episode of ascites, who were consecutively admitted at two clinical liver centres between November 2014 and October 2016.

Background: The optimal therapy of patients with acute subsegmental pulmonary embolism (PE) is controversial.
Methods: We used the RIETE (Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica) database to compare the rate of symptomatic PE recurrences during anticoagulation in patients with subsegmental, segmental, or more central PEs.
Results: Among 15 963 patients with a first episode of symptomatic PE, 834 (5.

Background: The burden of cardiovascular (CV) complications in patients hospitalised for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is still uncertain. Available studies used different designs and different criteria to define CV complications. We assessed the cumulative incidence of acute of CV complications during hospitalisation for CAP in Internal Medicine Units (IMUs).

Coronaviruses (CoVs) represent a large family of RNA viruses that can infect different living species, posing a global threat to human health. CoVs can evade the immune response, replicate within the host, and cause a rapid immune compromise culminating in severe acute respiratory syndrome. In humans, the immune system functions are influenced by physical activity, nutrition, and the absence of respiratory or cardiovascular diseases.

However, further field-practice studies are necessary to investigate the effectiveness and safety of the DCV+SOF combination in diverse subpopulations of patients with HCV, including those who are more challenging to treat such as patients with a genotype 3 (G3) infection. The aim of this retrospective, multicenter, field-practice study was to investigate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of the oral combination of DCV and SOF, with or without RBV (DCV+SOF±RBV), in a large unselected cohort of patients with chronic HCV infection (CHC).

Isolated distal deep-vein thrombosis (DVT, infra-popliteal DVT without pulmonary embolism) is a common presentation of venous thromboembolism (VTE), but was an exclusion criterion from the pivotal trials that validated the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for VTE management. Using data from the international RIETE registry, we analyzed and compared trends in DOACs prescription between January 2011 and June 2019 in patients with distal vs. proximal DVT.

Periprosthetic joint infections of the shoulder (PJIS) are the major cause for revision within the first two post-operative years, and are challenging both to diagnose and treat. Success depends on early identification of microorganisms, appropriate surgical procedures and efficient antibiotic administration. The peculiar microbiology of the shoulder may render the criteria for hip/knee PJI management inappropriate.

Purpose: Unrecognized posterior shoulder dislocation with a concomitant humeral head fracture affects joint function and no consensus exists regarding treatment. The present study analyses clinical and radiographic outcomes of a novel arthroscopic technique for reducing chronic locked posterior shoulder dislocation associated with subscapularis remplissage.
Methods: The study comprises a retrospective analysis of consecutive chronic posterior locked shoulders (CPLS) with minimum 2-years follow-up of patients who had undergone McLaughlin technique arthroscopic modification for the treatment of CPLS with a reverse Hill-Sachs lesion.

The successful treatment of proximal humeral fractures remains challenging for shoulder surgeons, and failure rates are high, regardless of initial treatment. This study aimed to analyze the clinical and radiographic midterm results of onlay lateralized cementless stem reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) in patients with valgus/varus malunion proximal humerus fracture sequelae without metaphyseal osteotomy. We retrospectively studied 35 cases with the diagnosis of fracture sequelae of the proximal part of the humerus with valgus/varus malunion.

Background: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and interobserver agreement in the identification of the comma sign. The second objective was to look for a correlation between the comma sign and the detachment of the superficial fascia of the subscapularis.
Materials And Methods: Two radiologists, blinded to the arthroscopic findings, retrospectively assessed the magnetic resonance images of 110 shoulders and were asked to assess the presence of the comma sign and the intact subscapularis fascia.

Background: the choice of treatment of chronic grade III acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation is controversial. Several surgical techniques have been described in the literature, responding differently to nonoperative treatment. The aim of this study is to describe a modified technique of stabilizing an AC joint dislocation with the new Infinity-Lock Button System, in order to demonstrate that it is effective in optimizing outcomes and decreasing complications.

Available data suggest that the issue of CoViD-19 is particularly critical in patients with diabetes. In Italy, Internal Medicine (IM) wards have played a pivotal role in contrasting the spread of SARS-Cov2. During this pandemic, FADOI submitted a brief questionnaire to a group of its members acting as Head of IM units.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a disease known from a few months, caused by a recently arisen virus and, consequently, it is little known. The disease has a benign course in most infected subjects (children and young adults), is often symptomatic in adults over the age of 50 and often serious and life threatening in people with comorbidities and the elderly. The few data published on coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) in the blood-oncology field report a serious clinical presentation, a serious course of the disease, and a high mortality rate, as has also been reported for other cancer contexts.

Most reports of post-transplant erythrocytosis have involved kidney recipients and, so far, there have been no large studies of onset of erythrocytosis after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) in children. We present a long-term survey of pediatric liver recipients, evaluating prevalence, outcome and the main potential causes of erythrocytosis, including a comprehensive mutational analysis of commonly related genes (mutations of HBB and HBA, JAK2, EPOR, VHL, EPAS1 and EGLN1). Between 2000 and 2015, 90 pediatric OLT recipients were observed for a median period of 8.

In the preoperative work-up of patients with anorectal fistulas, 3D-EAUS may represent the first-line diagnostic tool, showing high diagnostic accuracy in the evaluation of internal openings, primary tracks and secondary extension. In the cases of fistulas classified as complex by 3D-EAUS, MRI may be indicated as adjunctive diagnostic imaging examination, to more accurately detect the fistulas' secondary extensions, and so, to more carefully describe the fistulas' complete anatomy.

Major bleeding is one of the most dangerous complications for patients undergoing anticoagulant treatment for VTE. Several clinical scores have been planned to identify patients at higher risk of bleeding, and most of them take into consideration the number of platelets in particular if lower than normal. Here we report the clinical experience made with the RIETE registry concerning anticoagulant treatment in the presence of different values of platelets and their related risk of bleeding.
