Background: Abnormality of genes including 9p21 is known in malignant mesothelioma and we have examined the frequency of gene deletion and amplification using the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method. We formerly reported that abnormality of the genes was more common in the sarcomatoid type than epithelioid type. In this study, we compared the clinicopathological factors including nuclear grade (NG) and genomic abnormality in epithelioid malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM).

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) exerts a significant influence on gait performance. Therefore, a decrease in VOR function could worsen gait impairments in patients with poststroke hemiparesis. The effects of decreased VOR function on gait performance could be further exacerbated by aging-related physical weakness and impaired motor function of the hemiparetic lower limb.

Recently, wide spreading of fluoloquinolone resistant Escherichia coli is a serious problem inthe treatment of urinary tract infection. To investigate the causative bacterial strains of female acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC) in the community and their sensitivity to antimicrobial agents, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 215 female AUC patients treated at our clinics from April 2014 to June 2015. Two hundred and nineteen strains were isolated as the causative bacteria from the patients'urine samples, including E.

To prevent inguinal hernia after retropubic radical prostatectomy, many urologists have utilized a prevention technique of inguinal hernia at the same time as retropubic radical prostatectomy. Here, we report the clinical benefit of the prevention technique of inguinal hernia as well as risk factors for the incidence of inguinal hernia. We investigated the medical records of 223 men who underwent retropubic radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer between January 2007 and March 2013 at our medical center.

Since the loss of balance can result in falls or lower extremity injuries during sports or daily activities, quantitative evaluation of one’s ability to maintain balance with changes in the direction of motion is crucial. The present study aimed to assess whether the trajectory length of the center of pressure (COP) and peak values of the ground reaction force (GRF) following a single-leg hop landing differ when hopping forward or laterally, and to ascertain disparities in balance characteristics due to differences in hop direction. Twenty-four young volunteers (mean age, 22.

Inclusion-body myositis (IBM) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are biochemically characterized by the presence of aggregated β-amyloid protein and tau protein. In addition, both diseases are pathologically characterized by vacuolar changes, including rimmed vacuoles (RVs) in IBM and granulovacuolar degeneration (GVD) in AD. Previously, we demonstrated that RVs and GVD bodies are associated with a set of common molecules, leading us to speculate that both RVs and GVD bodies originate from similar structures on the plasma membrane of muscle cells and neuronal cells, namely, the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and the postsynaptic spine especially in terms of Wnt signaling pathway.

Purpose: We herein evaluated the status of circulating tumor cells (CTC) dislodged from the tumor during surgery in patients who underwent pulmonary resection for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to assess the clinical implications.
Methods: Tumor cells in the peripheral arterial blood before surgery (Before) and immediately after lung resection (After) and in the blood from the pulmonary vein of the resected lung were detected using a size selective method. The clinicopathological characteristics and the prognosis were then analyzed according to the CTC status: no tumor cells detected (N), single tumor cell or total number less than 4 cells (S), and existence of clustered cells (C).

A strategy of indicating lung excision for high risk patients is discussed based on reviewing of treatments for clinical stage I lung cancer. According to clinical studies of lung excision or stereotactic body radiation therapy both results may be similar, while a multicenter randomized prospective study is on-going. Since the result of lung excision may be revealed to depend on tumor size, tumor location in the lung, distance from surgical margin to tumor, tumor size-margin distance ratio and margin cytology results, a prospective study is recommended, which will be able to assessed clinical implications of such factors to extract patients having good prognoses.
