We aimed to investigate the association of a sustainable diet with a long-term reduction in waist circumference (WC) while identifying novel biomarkers for WC reduction (WCR). The participants were recruited initially during 2004-2013 in a large hospital-based cohort, and the follow-up measurements were conducted during 2012-2016. The 65,611 adults aged 45-75 were categorized into WC-loss ( = 22,290) and WC-gain ( = 43,321).

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is characterized by hepatic fat accumulation by metabolic dysfunction. The rising prevalence of MAFLD, especially among Asians, may be associated with changes in gut microbiota. We investigated gut microbiota characteristics and potential mechanisms leading to MAFLD development according to enterotypes.

We aimed to investigate the intricate interplay between genetic predisposition and lifestyle factors on stroke. We conducted a comprehensive genome-wide association study to identify the genetic variants linked to stroke in the participants who experienced a stroke event (cases; 672) and those with no stroke history (non-stroke; 58 029) in a large hospital-based cohort. Using generalised multifactor dimensionality reduction, we identified genetic variants with interactive effects and constructed polygenic risk scores (PRS) by summing up the risk alleles from the genetic variants.

The urgency to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from maritime vessels has intensified due to the increasingly stringent directives set forth by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These directives specifically address energy efficiency enhancements and emissions reduction within the shipping industry. In this context, hydrogen is the much sought after fuel for all the global economies and its applications, for transportation and propulsion in particular, is crucial for cutting down carbon emissions.

We produced rec-single chain eel luteinizing (rec-eel LH) and follicle-stimulating (rec- eel FSH) hormones displaying high biological activity in Chinese hamster ovary suspension (CHO-S) cells. We constructed several mutants, in which a linker, including an O-linked glycosylated carboxyl-terminal peptide (CTP) of an equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) β-subunit, was attached between the β- and α-subunit (LH-M and FSH-M) or in the N-terminal (C-LH and C-FSH) or C-terminal (LH-C and FSH-C) regions. The plasmids were transfected into CHO-S cells, and culture supernatants were collected.

Eunkyo-san is widely used in the treatment of severe respiratory infections. Mast cells not only serve as host cells for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), but also they also exacerbate Coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19) by causing a cytokine storm. Here we investigated whether Eunkyo-san and its active compound naringenin regulate the expression of inflammatory cytokines and factors connected to viral infection in activated human mast cell line, HMC-1 cells.

Kidney function can be preserved through pharmacological interventions and nonpharmacological strategies, such as lifestyle and dietary adjustments. Among these, coffee has been linked to protective effects on kidney function. However, few studies have investigated the effect of coffee consumption on kidney function according to specific genes.

Background: Increases in dependence among older adults cause increases in care needs and social care burden. Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) are often used to assess the independence of older adults residing in communities. Various factors affect IADL limitations, but few studies confirm gender differences in IADL limitations in older adults.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory intestinal disease affecting the colon and rectum, with its pathogenesis attributed to genetic background, environmental factors, and gut microbes. This study aimed to investigate the role of enterotypes in UC by conducting a hierarchical analysis, determining differential bacteria using machine learning, and performing Species Co-occurrence Network (SCN) analysis. Fecal bacterial data were collected from UC patients, and a 16S rRNA metagenomic analysis was performed using the QIIME2 bioinformatics pipeline.

Sensitive thermometry or thermography by responding to blackbody radiation is urgently desired in the intelligent information life, including scientific research, medical diagnosis, remote sensing, defense, etc. Even though thermography techniques based on infrared sensing have undergone unprecedented development, the poor compatibility with common optical components and the high diffraction limit impose an impediment to their integration into the established photonic integrated circuit or the realization of high-spatial-resolution and high-thermal-resolution imaging. In this work, we present a sensitive temperature-dependent visible photon detection in Bi-doped MAPbX (X = Cl, Br, and I) and employ it for uncooled thermography.

Rapid economic growth puts the natural environment under tremendous pressure. As a traditional chemical company, it is important to reconsider outdated business development models, develop innovative green initiatives for long-term growth, and choose approaches to address environmental issues. Determining how to encourage employees' green performance while balancing environmental issues is crucial for chemical companies in the current social and economic environment.

The genetic and environmental determinants of serum propionylcarnitine concentrations (PC) remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the impact of genetic and environmental factors on serum propionylcarnitine levels in middle-aged and elderly participants from the Ansan/Ansung cohort of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. Our goal was to understand the role of PC on the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) leading to cardiovascular disease, particularly concerning branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism.

Narrowband photodetectors have wide application potential in high-resolution imaging and encrypted communication, due to their high-precision spectral resolution capability. In this work, we report a fast response, high spectral rejection ratio, and self-filtered ultranarrowband photodetector with a new mechanism, which introduces bulk recombination by doping Bi and cooperates with surface recombination for further quenching photogenerated charges generated by short-wavelength-light excitation in perovskite single-crystal. A perovskite film focused on collecting charges is fabricated on the single crystal by a lattice-matched solution-processed epitaxial growth method.

A new co-simulation method is proposed for active devices and electromagnetic resonant circuits at microwave frequency range. For the measured and extracted device parameters, three steps of equivalent circuit models are processed of the general, simplified, and EM RLC models. To overcome the limited lumped element simulation in an electromagnetic simulator, the simplified equivalent circuit model is established by mathematical computation.

Introduction: Hypo-high-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia (hypo-HDL-C) contributes to the development of cardiovascular diseases. The hypothesis that the polygenic variants associated with hypo-HDL-C interact with lifestyle factors was examined in 58,701 middle-aged Korean adults who participated in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES).
Methods: Participants were categorized into the Low-HDL (case; = 16,980) and Normal-HDL ( = 41,721) groups.

The halide lead perovskite single crystals (HLPSCs) have great potential in gamma-ray detection with high attenuation coefficient, strong defects tolerance, and large mobility-lifetime product. However, mobile halide ions would migrate under high external bias, which would both weaken the gamma-ray response and cause additional noise. Here, we report the gamma-ray PIN photodiodes made of cascade HLPSCs including both ion-formed and electron-hole-formed electrical junctions that could suppress the ions migration and improve the charges collection.

A low-cost water-level sensor was developed utilizing a capacitive sensor design with only one thin-film transistor (TFT). The integration of the a-IGZO TFT process facilitated the complete integration of the water-level sensor on a substrate, including essential components, such as the transistor, capacitor, wires, and sensing electrode. This integration eliminates the need for a separate mounting process, resulting in a robust sensor assembly.
