Most previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified genetic variants associated with anthropometric traits. However, most of the evidence were reported in European populations. Anthropometric traits such as height and body fat distribution are significantly affected by gender and genetic factors.

The association between metabolic syndrome and eating patterns remains unclear. We hypothesized that Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI) scores were related to metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk in adults in a gender-dependent manner. We aimed to examine the hypothesis using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey-VI (2013-2017) data with a complex sample survey design.

We investigated the effects of molecular ordering on the electro-optical characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with an emission layer (EML) of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV). The EML was fabricated by a solution process which can make molecules ordered. The performance of the OLED devices with the molecular ordering method was compared to that obtained through fabrication by a conventional spin coating method.

Biochip Research Center, Hoseo University, Asan, Chungnam 31499, Republic of Korea; Department of Food Science & Technology, Hoseo University, Asan 31499, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Most allergic disease studies have focused on postnatal chemical or microbial exposure. Recent studies have indicated that allergic diseases are associated with the immunological interaction between the mother and her offspring, but the relevant mechanisms are unclear. The aim of this study was to assess whether maternal exposure to allergens during pregnancy could affect allergic rhinitis (AR) in the offspring.

The incidence of thyroid cancer continues to increase steadily, and this increasing incidence cannot be attributed solely to the overdiagnosis of microcarcinoma or technical advancements in detection methods and may also depend on environmental and genetic factors. However, the impacts and interactions of genetic and environmental factors remain controversial, and they may differ in Eastern and Western countries. The study's purpose was to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms of genes related to cell differentiation and inflammation to influence thyroid cancer incidence and determine interactions with lifestyles in a large city hospital-based cohort.

3GO is a condition in which hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia co-occur, and these conditions are related to each other and genetic and environmental factors. We hypothesized that common genetic variants and their interactions with lifestyles influenced 3GO risk. We aimed to explore common genetic variants to affect 3GO risk and their haplotype interaction with lifestyles in a city hospital-based cohort in 58,701 Koreans > 40 years.

and Genetic Variations Associated with Osteoporosis and Benign Breast Tumors in Korean Women.

Genes (Basel)

March 2021

Department of Medical Sciences, Graduate School, Soonchunhyang University, Asan, Chungnam 31538, Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoporosis is a disease that leads to reduced bone mass and fragility, especially prevalent among women, and it has been studied for its connection to breast cancer, which is a leading cause of mortality in women.
  • Genetic analysis, specifically a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Korean women, identified 60 SNPs linked to both osteoporosis and benign breast tumors, with significant findings in specific genes.
  • The study indicates that certain genetic variants affect osteoporosis risk following ovariectomy, highlighting the interplay between genetics and surgical treatment in women's health.

Pricing and Reimbursement Pathways of New Orphan Drugs in South Korea: A Longitudinal Comparison.

Healthcare (Basel)

March 2021

Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, College of Life and Health Sciences, Hoseo University, Asan 31499, Korea.

This study aimed to analyze four current pathways affecting the listing and post-listing prices of new orphan drugs (ODs) in South Korea. These mechanisms were: (1) essential OD, (2) pharmacoeconomic evaluation (PE) waiver OD, (3) weighted average price OD, and (4) PE OD. We analyzed the ratio of the listing price of 48 new ODs to the average adjusted price (AAP) of seven advanced countries and examined the change in the post-listing price.

Solution synthesis of MoSprecursor followed by direct printing could be an effective way to make printed electronic devices. A linear MoSpattern was obtained by an electrohydrodynamic (EHD)-jet printer with a sol-gel system without chemical vapor deposition. The morphology of the MoSafter a transfer process was maintained without wrinkles or cracking, resulting in a smooth surface compared with that of spin-coated films.

Aging alters body composition to induce sarcopenia, particularly in women, but the mechanism remains unclear. We hypothesized that silk peptide(SP) intake could prevent an age-related decrease in muscle mass and strength in middle-aged female rats and explored the action mechanism. After the acute intake of SP and defatted soybean peptides, serum concentrations of amino acids were measured in ten middle-aged rats in each group.

January 2022

Department of Food and Nutrition, Obesity/Diabetes Research Center, Hoseo University, 165 Sechul-Ri, BaeBang-Yup, ChungNam-Do, 336-795Asan-Si, South Korea.

Menopausal women are susceptible to osteoarthritis(OA) and memory impairment. We hypothesised that Alzheimer's-like disease(AD) exacerbates OA and that intermittent fasting(IMF) with a high-protein(H-P) diet would enhance memory function and relieve OA symptoms in oestrogen-deficient animals induced AD and OA. The action mechanism was also explored.

Laponite-Mediated Copper Metallization by Palladium Intercalation.

J Nanosci Nanotechnol

August 2021

Department of Chemical Engineering, Hoseo University, Asan-si, 31499, Republic of Korea.

An alternative catalytic method was employed using the reduction of Pd ions on the surface of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) treated laponite to initiate the electroless plating of copper; the deposition features of the Pd nanoparticles produced were investigated in detail. Results indicated intercalation and reduction of Pd nanoparticles occurred at room temperature and involved interaction between the laponite and the cetyltrimethylammonium cationic templates. Organic species and amount on laponite were optimized to adjust silicate platelet interlayer distances and platelet organophilic properties.
