Renal fusion anomalies are rare congenital malformations that comprise horseshoe kidney and crossed fused ectopia. Renal tumors arising from these fusion anomalies are anatomically complex, and surgical management can be technically challenging because of altered renal anatomy. Percutaneous CT-guided ablation can overcome some of these anatomical constraints, and microwave ablation has the additional benefit of shorter treatment time and reduced sensitivity to heat sink effects compared to other ablative modalities.

From the Valley Health System Graduate Medical Education, Emergency Medicine Residency.

Identification of a neonatal horseshoe kidney in the emergency department is uncommon but has implications for future healthcare planning for patients. We present a case of a neonate with bloody diapers who was evaluated with renal point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) that identified a horseshoe kidney. The ultrasound was remarkable for its clear visualization of the isthmus of the horseshoe kidney in the midline abdomen.

Surgical repair of abdominal aortic aneurism (AAA) with horseshoe kidney (HK) is challenging because of several accessory renal arteries (RAs), variable in number, branches, and vascular territories, with subsequent variable renal damage. The identification of RAs and vascular territories could contribute to surgical planning. We developed a semiautomatic presurgical computed tomography angiography (CTA)-based model to measure the renal volume of each RA, validated on postsurgical CTA in patients with HK treated for AAA.

Article Synopsis
  • - Crossed fused renal ectopia is a rare kidney disorder more common in males, occurring in about 1 in 2000 to 1 in 7500 individuals found during autopsies.
  • - A 34-year-old woman was assessed during her first-trimester screening, which showed a low risk of genetic disorders; however, further imaging suggested crossed fused renal ectopia, a diagnosis confirmed through later scans.
  • - This case highlights that crossed fused renal ectopia can be diagnosed as early as the first trimester and the condition did not lead to complications for the mother or baby, who was born healthy via C-section at 36 weeks.

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) represent a broad range of diseases with differing mechanisms, clinical presentations, and prognoses. With an estimated prevalence of between 4 and 60 per 10,000 births, CAKUT represents a sizable number of patients for pediatric and adult nephrologists as therapies have progressed, allowing longer life spans. Many CAKUT disorders are associated with genetic mutations, and with advances in genomic sequencing, these genes are being identified at an increasing rate.

A metagene based similarity network fusion approach for multi-omics data integration identified novel subtypes in renal cell carcinoma.

Brief Bioinform

Department of Health Statistics, Shanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Major Diseases Risk Assessment, School of Public Health, Shanxi Medical University, Taiyuan, Shanxi, 030001, PR, China.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) ranks among the most prevalent cancers worldwide, with both incidence and mortality rates increasing annually. The heterogeneity among RCC patients presents considerable challenges for developing universally effective treatment strategies, emphasizing the necessity of in-depth research into RCC's molecular mechanisms, understanding the variations among RCC patients and further identifying distinct molecular subtypes for precise treatment. We proposed a metagene-based similarity network fusion (Meta-SNF) method for RCC subtype identification with multi-omics data, using a non-negative matrix factorization technique to capture alternative structures inherent in the dataset as metagenes.

Inflammation is central to numerous diseases, highlighting the need for new anti-inflammatory agents. This study explores the potential of novel spirofused indoline-quinazoline hybrids (4a-p) as anti-inflammatory compounds, inspired by a spiroisatin analogue (VI) that showed modest TNF-α inhibition. We aimed to enhance activity by modifying the isatin scaffold: first, introducing N-alkylation (propyl, butyl, or isobutyl) to improve hydrophobic interactions within the TNF-α dimer active site; second, adding halogens (F, Cl, Br) at the 5-position to increase lipophilicity.

Mucinous adenocarcinoma in kidneys with developmental anomalies - a report of two cases.

BMC Urol

November 2024

Department of Urology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, 576104, India.

Background: Primary mucinous adenocarcinomas of the kidney are rare and pose a challenge for preoperative diagnosis. The histogenesis of these tumours remains largely unknown, with three proposed theories: chronic irritation, differentiation of celomic epithelium, and kidney maldevelopment. Here, we present two cases of renal mucinous adenocarcinoma in patients with developmental renal anomalies, specifically a duplex collecting system and a horseshoe kidney.

The cycloaddition of nitrile oxides and nitrilimines to one or both of the C=C double bonds of caryophyllene is described. The possibility of introducing five-membered fused and spiro-linked heterocycles into the structure of sesquiterpenes by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of nitrile oxides and nitrilimines to caryophyllene was demonstrated. As a result of these reactions, pharmacophore fragments of isoxazoline and pyrazoline are introduced into the structure of caryophyllene, which leads to an increase in the conformational rigidity of the molecule.
