Background: Imbalanced datasets pose significant challenges in predictive modeling, leading to biased outcomes and reduced model reliability. This study addresses data imbalance in diabetes prediction using machine learning techniques. Utilizing data from the Fasa Adult Cohort Study (FACS) with a 5-year follow-up of 10,000 participants, we developed predictive models for Type 2 diabetes.

Background: According to epidemiological studies, unhealthy dietary patterns and lifestyle lead to rising obesity and cardiometabolic diseases in Iran. Hybrid techniques were used to identify a dietary pattern characterized by fiber, folic acid, and carotenoid intake due to their association with cardiometabolic risk factors such as anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, lipid profile, C-Reactive Protein (CRP), Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor (PAI), Homeostatic Model Assessment Index (HOMA Index), cardiometabolic index (CMI), and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP-1). So, the objective of the recent study is to compare the reduced-rank regression (RRR) and partial least-squares (PLS) approaches to principal component analysis (PCA) for estimating diet-cardiometabolic risk factor correlations in Iranian obese women.

Public Health Nutr

September 2024

National Nutrition and Food Technology Research Institute, Faculty of Nutrition Sciences and Food Technology, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between postprandial hyperinsulinaemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), suggesting that diet may affect serum insulin levels.
  • A total of 3,158 participants from Tehran were assessed to determine the prevalence of NAFLD, which was found to be 29.9%, with varying rates between males and females.
  • Results indicated that higher dietary insulin index (DII) was significantly linked to increased NAFLD risk for both sexes, while dietary insulin load (DIL) only showed a strong connection in females, highlighting the need for dietary considerations in NAFLD prevention.

Introduction: Esophageal Cancer (EC) ranks among the most common malignancies worldwide. Most EC patients acquire drug resistance to chemotherapy either intrinsically or acquired after T-DM1 treatment, which shows that increasing or decreasing the expression of particular genes might influence chemotherapeutic sensitivity or resistance. Therefore, gaining a deeper understanding of the altered expression of genes involved in EC drug resistance and developing new therapeutic methods are essential targets for continued advancement in EC therapy.

Potential promising of synthetic lethality in cancer research and treatment.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

September 2024

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Biological Science, Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, Iran.

Cancer is a complex disease driven by multiple genetic changes, including mutations in oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, DNA repair genes, and genes involved in cancer metabolism. Synthetic lethality (SL) is a promising approach in cancer research and treatment, where the simultaneous dysfunction of specific genes or pathways causes cell death. By targeting vulnerabilities created by these dysfunctions, SL therapies selectively kill cancer cells while sparing normal cells.

Background: The prevalence of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) poses a significant threat to the lives of 257 million individuals globally, potentially resulting in severe outcomes such as liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Among the existing preventive measures, yeast-derived vaccines have proven to be the most efficacious approach in combatting hepatitis B. Nonetheless, as scientific inquiries focus more on occult HBV infection (OBI) in vaccinated persons and the lingering risk of vertical transmission affecting 10-30 % of babies born to HBsAg-positive mothers, there is a growing apprehension regarding the inability of HBV vaccines to ensure complete immunity.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) may help the brain resist both functional and structural neurodegeneration, which is critical for maintaining cognitive and neurological health in older adults. This meta-analysis and meta-regression seek to elucidate the impact of physical activity on these biomarker levels in healthy seniors, as well as to examine the influence of several moderator factors, including age, sex, period length, and time, for the first time. The standardized mean effect metric was used to assess the influence of weights, which reflected each group's relative importance in comparison to baseline data.
