Water-pipe Tobacco Components and their Association with Oxidative Stress.

Addict Health

July 2024

Molecular Medicine Research Center, Hormozgan Health Institute, Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences, Bandar Abbas, Iran.

Oxidative stress (OS) results from an imbalance between the formation and detoxification of reactive species. Although reactive species at low or moderate levels play numerous physiological roles, high concentrations can lead to disturbances in signaling and metabolic pathways and cause different metabolic, chronic, and age-related disorders. Several endogenous and exogenous processes may lead to the formation of reactive species.

  • Previous studies hint that a better diet may improve mental health, but few have specifically looked at the Prime Diet Quality Score (PDQS) in relation to depression and anxiety.
  • This study analyzed data from almost 2000 adults in Iran to see how diet quality—measured by PDQS and Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015)—relates to depression and anxiety.
  • The findings revealed that both dietary scores were linked to lower odds of depression and anxiety, with PDQS showing a stronger protective effect than HEI-2015, suggesting it might be a better option for mental health prevention.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease primarily impacting women of childbearing age. While pregnancy and hormonal stress can trigger SLE flare-ups, the effects of assisted reproductive therapies (ARTs) on SLE patients are not well defined. We conducted a search of PubMed/Medline, Embase, and CENTRAL until March 20, 2024, to find observational studies assessing the prevalence of SLE flares and pregnancy outcomes following ARTs.

  • Non-specific chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a widespread issue that persists despite various treatments, and this study investigates the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on alleviating pain in these patients.
  • The research involved 15 CLBP patients who underwent rTMS, measuring pain intensity and brain activity through fMRI before and after treatment, with findings indicating a significant reduction in pain intensity (36.22%).
  • Results showed a positive correlation between brain activity in the insula and pain levels, while activity in the medial prefrontal cortex negatively correlated, suggesting that changes in specific brain regions may be linked to pain reduction in CLBP when subjected to rTMS.

  • This meta-analysis investigates the link between dietary habits, specifically the empirical dietary index for hyperinsulinemia (EDIH) score, and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D).
  • Researchers analyzed data from various studies, including six cohort studies with nearly 31,300 T2D cases over follow-up periods ranging from 5 to over 20 years.
  • The findings indicate that a higher EDIH score correlates with a significantly increased risk of T2D (HR: 1.47), suggesting dietary factors may play a crucial role in T2D development.

  • Children in the emergency department often require procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA), with ketamine being a common choice, but it can cause side effects like vomiting, which could be dangerous.
  • This study examines whether pre-procedural anxiety is linked to the risk of vomiting in children aged 2 to 14 undergoing PSA with ketamine.
  • A sample of 93 children showed no significant correlation between their anxiety levels before the procedure and the incidence of vomiting, suggesting that anxiety might not play a key role in this adverse effect.

Background: According to epidemiological studies, unhealthy dietary patterns and lifestyle lead to rising obesity and cardiometabolic diseases in Iran. Hybrid techniques were used to identify a dietary pattern characterized by fiber, folic acid, and carotenoid intake due to their association with cardiometabolic risk factors such as anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, lipid profile, C-Reactive Protein (CRP), Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor (PAI), Homeostatic Model Assessment Index (HOMA Index), cardiometabolic index (CMI), and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP-1). So, the objective of the recent study is to compare the reduced-rank regression (RRR) and partial least-squares (PLS) approaches to principal component analysis (PCA) for estimating diet-cardiometabolic risk factor correlations in Iranian obese women.
