Factors associated with severity and mortality of COVID-19 in patients with connective tissue diseases and rheumatoid arthritis: A nation-wide, population-based analysis of the French national medico-administrative SNDS database.

Objectives: To investigate the risk and predictors of severity and mortality of COVID-19 infection in patients with Connective Tissue Diseases (CTDs).

Methods: Using the French nationwide claims and hospitalization database, we assembled a nation-wide exhaustive cohort of adult CTD patients with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, Sjögren's disease, inflammatory myopathies, systemic sclerosis. We analyzed the rates of hospitalization, severe inpatient stays (intensive care unit [ICU] admissions or in-hospital mortality), and in-hospital mortality with COVID-19 from January 1st to December 31st, 2020.

Systemic capillary leak syndrome.

The vascular endothelial barrier maintains intravascular volume and metabolic homeostasis. Although plasma fluids and proteins extravasate continuously from tissue microvasculature (capillaries, post-capillary venules), systemic vascular leakage increases in critical illness associated with sepsis, burns and trauma, among others, or in association with certain drugs or toxin exposures. Systemically dysregulated fluid homeostasis, which can lead to hypovolaemia, hypotensive shock and widespread tissue oedema, has been termed systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) when overt secondary causes (for example, heart or liver failure) are excluded.

Epidermal maintenance of Langerhans cells relies on autophagy-regulated lipid metabolism.

Macroautophagy (often-named autophagy), a catabolic process involving autophagy-related (Atg) genes, prevents the accumulation of harmful cytoplasmic components and mobilizes energy reserves in long-lived and self-renewing cells. Autophagy deficiency affects antigen presentation in conventional dendritic cells (DCs) without impacting their survival. However, previous studies did not address epidermal Langerhans cells (LCs).

Chlorhexidine-alcohol compared with povidone-iodine-alcohol skin antisepsis protocols in major cardiac surgery: a randomized clinical trial.

Purpose: Whether skin disinfection of the surgical site using chlorhexidine-alcohol is superior to povidone-iodine-alcohol in reducing reoperation and surgical site infection rates after major cardiac surgery remains unclear.

Methods: CLEAN 2 was a multicenter, open-label, randomized, two-arm, assessor-blind, superiority trial conducted in eight French hospitals. We randomly assigned adult patients undergoing major heart or aortic surgery via sternotomy, with or without saphenous vein or radial artery harvesting, to have all surgical sites disinfected with either 2% chlorhexidine-alcohol or 5% povidone-iodine-alcohol.

Diuretics and mortality reduction in incident dialysis patients: a two-year observational study.

Fluid overload predicts morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. Diuretics can reduce fluid overload, but their effects on morbi-mortality following inception remain ill-defined. To determine whether diuretics reduce mortality and hospitalization rates in incident dialysis patients in the first 2 years after inception.

Risk of Incident Cancer in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease with Prior Breast Cancer: A Multicenter Cohort Study.

Background & Aims: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy observed in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The aim of our study was to evaluate incident cancer rate (recurrence or new-onset cancer) in a cohort of patients with IBD with a history of breast cancer according to the subsequent IBD treatment provided.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective study included consecutive patients with IBD with prior breast cancer.

In medicine, virological diagnosis is mainly based on the detection of the viral genome and antigens, or on the identification of specific antibodies produced in response to infection. These strategies are suitable for characterizing an active infection or past contact with an already known virus. The recent development of tests for evaluating the host's cellular immune response opens new perspectives for personalized patient care based on immunomonitoring.

Chromosomal abnormalities in oocyte donor candidates: a French survey of over 8,200 karyotypes.

Objective: To study karyotypes of >8,200 oocyte donor candidates in nulliparous or multiparous women compared with a reference population.

SEPSIGN: early identification of sepsis signs in emergency department.

Because 20-30% of patients with sepsis deteriorate to critical illness, biomarkers that provide accurate early prognosis may identify which patients need more intensive treatment versus safe early discharge. The objective was to test the performance of sVEGFR2, suPAR and PCT, alone or combined with clinical signs and symptoms, for the prediction of clinical deterioration. This prospective observational study enrolled patients with suspected infection who met SIRS criteria without organ dysfunction (delta SOFA <2 from baseline) from 16 emergency departments.

Postoperative lymphopaenia as a risk factor for postoperative infections in cancer surgery: A prospective multicentre cohort study (the EVALYMPH study).

Background: Stress due to surgical trauma decreases postoperative lymphocyte counts (LCs), potentially favouring the occurrence of postoperative infections (PIs).

Objectives: We aimed to determine whether postoperative lymphopaenia following thoracic or gastrointestinal cancer surgery is an independent risk factor for PIs and to identify modifiable factors related to anaesthesia and surgical procedures that might affect its occurrence.

Study Design: The EVALYMPH study was a prospective, multicentre cohort study with a 30-day patient follow-up.

Provinols™, a Polyphenolic Extract of Red Wine, Inhibits In-Stent Neointimal Growth in Cholesterol-Fed Rabbit.

Epidemiological studies indicate a potential correlation between the consumption of polyphenols and a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disorders. The present study investigates the potential of a red wine polyphenol oral extract, Provinols™, to reduce neointimal hyperplasia following angioplasty in a hypercholesterolemic rabbit model. New Zealand white rabbits were fed 1% cholesterol-enriched chow for a period of eight weeks prior to the induction of iliac balloon injury and subsequent stent placement.

Detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato by proteomics: a complementary diagnosis tool on erythema migrans biopsies.

Objectives: We have developed targeted proteomics in the context of Lyme borreliosis (LM) as a new direct diagnostic tool for detecting Borrelia proteins in the skin of patients with erythema migrans. If satisfactory, this proteomic technique could be used in addition to culture and/or PCR for disseminated infections where Borrelia detection is essential to demonstrate active infection. In these infections, the diagnosis is indirect and relies mainly on serology.

Aesthetical and Functional Rehabilitation for an Ankylosed Maxillary Canine-A Case Report.

As the functional and aesthetical importance of the canine cannot be overstated, the management of a missing canine is challenging. This case report describes the treatment of an infra-occluded ankylosed maxillary canine in a patient with previously failed orthodontic treatment. A 20-year-old patient sought a second opinion for orthodontic treatment failure.

Effect of high-flow nasal cannula oxygen versus standard oxygen on mortality in patients with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure: protocol for a multicentre, randomised controlled trial (SOHO).

Introduction: First-line oxygenation strategy in patients with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure consists in standard oxygen or high-flow nasal oxygen therapy. Clinical practice guidelines suggest the use of high-flow nasal oxygen rather than standard oxygen. However, findings remain contradictory with a low level of certainty.
