Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the safety of an early chest tube removal (CTR) protocol on the first postoperative day (POD1) within an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program, comparing it with traditional care in terms of risks like pneumothorax and hospital mortality.* -
  • The research included 3,153 patients, and after matching groups, it was found that the rate of early CTR increased significantly in the ERAS group, yet the overall incidence of complications remained similar between both groups.* -
  • Results demonstrated that the ERAS group had better outcomes, including a lower risk of bronchopneumonia and shorter ICU and hospital stays, indicating that early CTR can be safely integrated into ERAS

Objectives: One main challenge for textile implants is to limit the foreign body reaction (FBR) and in particular the fibrosis development once the device is implanted. Fibrotic tissue in-growth depends on the fiber size, the pore size, and the organization of the fibrous construction. Basically, non-woven fibrous assemblies present a more favorable interface to biological tissues than do woven structures.

Introduction: Toll-like receptors play crucial roles in the sepsis-induced systemic inflammatory response. Septic shock mortality correlates with overexpression of neutrophilic TLR2 and TLR9, while the role of TLR4 overexpression remains a debate. In addition, TLRs are involved in the pathogenesis of viral infections such as COVID-19, where the single-stranded RNA of SARS-CoV-2 is recognized by TLR7 and TLR8, and the spike protein activates TLR4.

Background: Knee periprosthetic femoral fractures (KPPFF) are becoming more frequent due to the increasing number of arthroplasties and the aging population, for whom maintaining autonomy and function remains a challenge. The use of locking plates has improved functional results and promoted the development of "minimally invasive" surgical (MIS) approaches. Despite the availability of literature comparing between different types of osteosynthesis for KPPFF, there is a paucity of information available on the complications of osteosynthesis using locking plates, depending on the approach.

Biallelic variants in Plexin B2 () cause amelogenesis imperfecta, hearing loss and intellectual disability.

J Med Genet

June 2024

Institut de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire (IGBMC), INSERM U1258, CNRS-UMR7104, Université de Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Plexins are important receptors associated with semaphorin signaling, involved in essential cellular interactions during both development and adulthood, with only some variants linked to genetic diseases so far.
  • A study examined eight individuals from six families with a rare recessive condition characterized by amelogenesis imperfecta (AI), sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and varying levels of intellectual disability, using genetic sequencing and variant analysis.
  • The research identified pathogenic biallelic variants in the plexin B2 gene, linked to a new autosomal recessive syndrome that features AI and SNHL, along with potential additional symptoms like intellectual disability and developmental abnormalities.

Nantes Université, CHU Nantes, Service de Génétique Médicale, 44000, Nantes, France; Nantes Université, CHU Nantes, CNRS, INSERM, L'institut Du Thorax, 44000 Nantes, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the concept of incomplete penetrance in neurodevelopmental disorders, where some individuals carry pathogenic genetic variants but remain asymptomatic.
  • Between 2020 and 2022, researchers collaborated with a French network to analyze families where affected individuals had inherited these variants from symptom-free parents, finding 12 cases with significant genetic findings.
  • The results suggest that incomplete penetrance may be more common than previously acknowledged, highlighting its importance for genetic interpretation, counseling, and future research into its underlying mechanisms.

Background: Sjögren's disease is a heterogenous autoimmune disease with a wide range of symptoms-including dryness, fatigue, and pain-in addition to systemic manifestations and an increased risk of lymphoma. We aimed to identify distinct subgroups of the disease, using cluster analysis based on subjective symptoms and clinical and biological manifestations, and to compare the prognoses of patients in these subgroups.

Methods: This study included patients with Sjögren's disease from two independent cohorts in France: the cross-sectional Paris-Saclay cohort and the prospective Assessment of Systemic Signs and Evolution of Sjögren's Syndrome (ASSESS) cohort.

Service de Maladies Infectieuses et Tropicales, Centre Hospitalo-universitaire (CHU) de Toulouse, France; Institut Toulousain des Maladies Infectieuses et Inflammatoires (Infinity) INSERM, Université Toulouse III, Toulouse, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Bispecific antibodies (BsAbs) are used to treat relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, but frequent infections were noted during clinical trials, indicating a need for further real-world data on infection risks and outcomes.
  • A multicenter retrospective study involving 229 patients in France from December 2020 to February 2023 found a high incidence of infections, with 234 recorded cases, primarily affecting the respiratory system, and a hospitalization rate of 56%.
  • The study identified corticosteroids used for managing cytokine release syndrome as a risk factor for infections, while using GPRC5D-targeting BsAbs and antibacterial prophylaxis was associated with a reduced risk.

Cerebral dural arteriovenous fistulas in patients with PTEN-related hamartoma tumor syndrome.

Clin Genet

July 2024

Sorbonne Université, INSERM, Unité Mixte de Recherche Scientifique 938 et SIRIC CURAMUS, Centre de Recherche Saint-Antoine, Equipe Instabilité des Microsatellites et Cancer, Paris, France.

Central nervous system (CNS) dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) have been reported in PTEN-related hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS). However, PHTS-associated DAVF remain an underexplored field of the PHTS clinical landscape. Here, we studied cases with a PTEN pathogenic variant identified between 2007 and 2020 in our laboratory (n = 58), and for whom brain imaging was available.

Chest

June 2024

Service de Pneumologie et Oncologie Thoracique, Centre constitutif Maladies pulmonaires rares, Université Paris Sorbonne, Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, Hôpital Tenon, Paris, France.

Background: One of the major challenges in managing allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis remains consistent and reproducible assessment of response to treatment.

Research Question: What are the most relevant changes in CT scan parameters over time for assessing response to treatment?

Study Design And Methods: In this ancillary study of a randomized clinical trial (NebuLamB), patients with asthma with available CT scan and without exacerbation during a 4-month allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis exacerbation treatment period (corticosteroids and itraconazole) were included. Changed CT scan parameters were assessed by systematic analyses of CT scan findings at initiation and end of treatment.
