After preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), antibiotics and antenatal steroids are effective evidence-based interventions, but the use of tocolysis is controversial. We investigated whether a unit policy of tocolysis use after PPROM is associated with prolonged gestation and improved outcomes for very preterm infants in units that systematically use these other evidence-based treatments. From the prospective, observational, population-based EPICE cohort study (all very preterm births in 19 regions from 11 European countries, 2011-2012), we included 607 women with a singleton pregnancy and PPROM at 24-29 weeks' gestation, of whom 101, 195 and 311 were respectively managed in 17, 32 and 45 units with no-use, restricted and liberal tocolysis policies for PPROM.

Caloric starvation, as well as various diets, has been proposed to increase the oxidative DNA damage induced by radiotherapy (RT). However, some diets could have dual effects, sometimes promoting cancer growth, whereas proposing caloric restriction may appear counterproductive during RT considering that the maintenance of weight is a major factor for the success of this therapy. A systematic review was performed via a PubMed search on RT and fasting, or caloric restriction, ketogenic diet (>75% of fat-derived energy intake), protein starvation, amino acid restriction, as well as the Warburg effect.

The beneficial effects of lipoic acid (LA) in cancer treatment have been well documented in the last decade. Indeed, LA exerts crucial antiproliferative effects by reducing breast cancer cell viability, cell cycle progression and the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). However, the mechanisms of action (MOA) underlying these antiproliferative effects remain to be elucidated.

Citrulline prevents age-related LTP decline in old rats.

Sci Rep

December 2019

Centre de Psychiatrie et Neurosciences, UMR_S894, INSERM, Université Paris Descartes, Sorbonne Paris Cité, Paris, France.

The prevalence of cognitive decline is increasing as the ageing population is considerably growing. Restricting this age-associated process has become a challenging public health issue. The age-related increase in oxidative stress plays a major role in cognitive decline, because of its harmful effect on functional plasticity of the brain, such as long-term potentiation (LTP).

Although the use of EDTA-containing collection tubes is known to stabilize the complement analytes and to make the results more reliable, no external quality assessment (EQA) scheme based on EDTA plasma samples is available to date in France. Consequently, a number of clinical laboratories currently participate to EQA program on samples whose matrix is different from their routine practice. The aim of this work was to offer a new external quality assessment scheme, as an inter-laboratory exchange (ILE).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study highlights the importance of fatty acid synthesis (FASII) products in Staphylococcus aureus, which has led to the development of antibiotics targeting this pathway, previously shown to work in animal models.
  • - Researchers found that S. aureus can quickly adapt to FASII antibiotics when in host environments, without changing its FASII genes, and that administering these antibiotics during infection is less effective than expected.
  • - The presence of serum in the host environment reduces the stress on S. aureus' membranes, allowing it to use alternative fatty acids and evade the effects of FASII antibiotics, indicating that this flexibility limits the effectiveness of these treatments alone.

ACLY links energy metabolism provided by catabolic pathways to biosynthesis. ACLY, which has been found to be overexpressed in many cancers, converts citrate into acetyl-CoA and OAA. The first of these molecules supports protein acetylation, in particular that of histone, and de novo lipid synthesis, and the last one sustains the production of aspartate (required for nucleotide and polyamine synthesis) and the regeneration of NADPH,H(consumed in redox reaction and biosynthesis).
