February 2024

Hôpital cardiovasculaire Louis-Pradel, centre d'investigation clinique INSERM 1407, service insuffisance cardiaque, Hospices civils de Lyon ; université Claude-Bernard Lyon-1, INSERM U1060 CarMeN, Lyon, France.

Article Synopsis
  • - Natriuretic peptides like BNP and NT-proBNP are essential for diagnosing heart failure (HF) due to their accuracy, especially in cases of sudden shortness of breath, helping to distinguish cardiac issues from other causes.
  • - Elevated levels of these peptides indicate heart failure, while normal levels can effectively exclude it; factors like age, kidney function, and obesity can affect their levels and should be considered in diagnosis.
  • - For patients with chronic heart failure, measuring these peptides aids in monitoring the condition, adjusting treatment, and assessing prognosis, but it's important to stick to one specific biomarker to reduce confusion.

Neu Laxova syndrome (NLS) is a rare and lethal congenital disorder characterized by severe intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR), ichthyosis, abnormal facial features, limb abnormalities with arthrogryposis and a wide spectrum of severe malformations of the central nervous system (CNS). NLS is due to biallelic variants in three genes previously involved in serine-deficiency disorders (PHGDH, PSAT1 and PSPH), extending the phenotypic spectrum of these disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is common in ICU admissions, particularly among immunocompromised patients, yet there is limited understanding of the role of viruses in this context.
  • In a study of 4038 immunocompromised patients, 9.2% had virus-detected ARF, with influenza being the most prevalent virus; significant mortality and factors influencing it were identified, including neutropenia and invasive mechanical ventilation needs.
  • Remarkably, patients with virus-detected ARF had lower mortality rates compared to those with ARF from other causes, suggesting that certain viruses may have a less severe impact overall.

The potential for citrate to reinforce epigenetic therapy by promoting apoptosis.

Trends Endocrinol Metab

October 2023

Cochin Institute, INSERM U1016, CNRS UMR8104, University of Paris-Cité, Paris, 75014, France.

Epigenetic drugs induce ATP depletion, promoting a glycolysis-to-oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) shift which sometimes favors tumor growth by promoting necroptosis over apoptosis. To restore effective apoptosis in tumors, we propose that the administration of citrate could inhibit ATP production, activate caspase-8 (a key necroptosis inhibitor), and downregulate key anti-apoptotic proteins (Bcl-xL and MCL1).

Primary prevention of cancer-associated venous thrombosis: Rationale and challenges in clinical practice.

Curr Res Transl Med

July 2023

Service d'Oncologie médicale, APHP-SU, IUC, Hôpital La Pitié-Salpêtrière, Paris, France.

Cancer-associated venous thrombosis (CAT) is a common, multifactor event known to complicate the course of cancer and jeopardize a patient's prognosis. The current guidelines regarding the prevention of CAT are sometimes considered insufficiently precise about specific situations, or are poorly applied. The expected benefits of thromboprophylaxis are balanced by the risk of major bleeding induced by anticoagulation, which implies a need to accurately identify ambulatory patients at high risk of thrombosis or hemorrhage.
