Major depletion of insulin sensitivity-associated taxa in the gut microbiome of persons living with HIV controlled by antiretroviral drugs.

BMC Med Genomics

August 2024

INSERM UMR_S938, Centre de Recherche Saint-Antoine, Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire de Cardio-Métabolisme et Nutrition (ICAN), Sorbonne Université, Paris, F-75012, France.

Background: Persons living with HIV (PWH) harbor an altered gut microbiome (higher abundance of Prevotella and lower abundance of Bacillota and Ruminococcus lineages) compared to non-infected individuals. Some of these alterations are linked to sexual preference and others to the HIV infection. The relationship between these lineages and metabolic alterations, often present in aging PWH, has been poorly investigated.

  • Individuals with bipolar disorders (BD) tend to have a shorter life expectancy, prompting the need for easily measurable markers of accelerated aging like BioAge, calculated from routine blood tests and physical exams.
  • In a study of 2,220 outpatients with BD, results showed that a small percentage had significant BioAge Acceleration, which is linked to factors such as young age, male sex, being overweight, and sleep issues.
  • Further research is needed to confirm these findings with different groups and explore whether improving factors like metabolic health and sleep could impact aging rates in individuals with BD.

(1) Background: Macrophagic myofasciitis (MMF) is an inflammatory histopathological lesion demonstrating long-term biopersistence of vaccine-derived aluminum adjuvants within muscular phagocytic cells. Affected patients suffer from widespread myalgia and severe fatigue consistent with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), a poorly understood disorder suspected to result from chronic immune stimulation by infectious and inorganic particles. (2) Methods: In this study we determined the immuno-metabolic properties of MMF phagocytic cells compared to controls, at rest and upon exposure to aluminum oxyhydroxide adjuvant, with or without adsorbed antigens, using protein quantification and an oxygen consumption assay.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) tolerate changes to the ECMO membrane during veno-venous ECMO (VV-ECMO).
  • Out of 70 patients treated with VV-ECMO, 32 required 56 membrane changes due to complications, with 59% of these changes resulting in severe adverse events such as hypoxemia or cardiac issues.
  • Key factors linked to poor tolerance of membrane changes were identified as low tidal volume, low respiratory compliance, low oxygen levels, and high blood flow through the ECMO system, with specific threshold values established for assessing risk.

October 2024

Univ Paris Est Créteil (UPEC), INSERM, IMRB, Translational Neuropsychiatry laboratory, AP-HP, DMU IMPACT, Fédération Hospitalo-Universitaire de Médecine de Précision en Psychiatrie (FHU ADAPT), Fondation FondaMental, Créteil F-94010, France. Electronic address:

Immune dysregulation is an important aspect of schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorders (BD) pathophysiology, including not only inflammatory but also autoimmune process reflective of abnormal humoral immune responses. Given that B cell-activating factor (BAFF) is an integral aspect of B lymphocyte regulation, the current study investigated BAFF in SZ and BD. 255 SZ patients, 407 BD patients and 185 healthy controls (HC) were investigated across three aspects of soluble BAFF (sBAFF) by (i) comparing sBAFF circulatory levels across SZ, BD and HC, (ii) determining potential correlations between the circulating levels of sBAFF and the genotype distribution of a functionally relevant polymorphism, namely the TNFSF13B 3'UTR insertion-deletion polymorphism (GCTGT>A), (iii) analyzing relationships between both sBAFF levels and 3'UTR insertion-deletion genotypes and disease risk, patients clinical characteristics and circulating levels of potent inflammatory molecules.

Despite advances in weaning protocols, extubation failure (EF) is associated with poor outcomes. Many predictors of EF have been proposed, including hypercapnia at the end of the spontaneous breathing test (SBT). However, performing arterial blood gases at the end of SBT is not routinely recommended, whereas end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) can be routinely monitored during SBT.

Shift in emergency department utilization by frequent attendees with sickle cell disease during the COVID-19 pandemic: A multicentre cohort study.

Br J Haematol

August 2024

Sorbonne Université, INSERM, Institut Pierre Louis d'Epidémiologie et de Santé Publique, IPLESP, Réseau Sentinelles, Paris, France.

While the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) might have increased acute episodes in people living with sickle cell disease (SCD), it may also have changed their reliance on emergency department (ED) services. We assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns on ED visits in adult SCD people followed in five French reference centres, with a special focus on 'high users' (≥10 visits in 2019). We analysed the rate of ED visits from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2021, using a self-controlled case series.
