Word reading requires a range of spatial attention processes, such as orienting to a specific word and selecting it while ignoring other words. This study investigated whether deficits of these spatial attention processes can show dissociations after hemispheric lesions. Thirty-nine patients with left or right focal epilepsy and 66 healthy participants had to read aloud four-letter words presented in the left and right visual hemifields.

Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between centre/country-based factors and two important process and outcome indicators in patients with hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HABSI).

Methods: We used data on HABSI from the prospective EUROBACT-2 study to evaluate the associations between centre/country factors on a process or an outcome indicator: adequacy of antimicrobial therapy within the first 24 h or 28-day mortality, respectively. Mixed logistical models with clustering by centre identified factors associated with both indicators.

Practice of pediatric aphereses - in particular when caring for low-weight children - differs from the practice of adult aphereses, since pediatric aphereses represent low numbers of procedures, which has practical implications in terms of practical training and retraining for involved healthcare personnel, as needed for habilitation and validation of ongoing competencies. A specific training is mandatory in order to ensure both the child and the staff safety during and after collection, as well as ensure high quality of the collected cell product and that its meets predefined specifications that depend on its intended use. Low and very low-weight children deserve a particular attention for a number of procedural and clinical aspects: the nature and quality of venous accesses to ensure proper operation of the cell separator, management of hemodynamic fluctuations in relation with the relative importance of the extracorporeal blood volume as compared to the total blood volume of the child, risks and clinical manifestations of citrate toxicity, minimization of stress during the procedure that may include but is not limited to pharmacological sedation.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sandfly-borne phleboviruses (SBPs) are increasingly recognized as significant public health threats, causing diseases like sandfly fever and meningitis, making early diagnosis crucial through virus nucleic acid testing.
  • - This study compares five different generic primer sets for detecting SBPs, including both well-known and recently discovered virus strains, evaluating their effectiveness in identifying these pathogens.
  • - The findings highlight two singleplex primer sets that could potentially be adapted for more efficient detection methods, emphasizing the importance of ongoing research to improve diagnostic capabilities for known and novel SBPs.

Data on the SARS-CoV-2 infection among primary health care workers (PHCWs) are scarce but essential to reflect on policy regarding prevention and control measures. We assessed the prevalence of PHCWs who have been infected by SARS-CoV-2 in comparison with modeling from the general population in metropolitan France, and associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among general practitioners (GPs), pediatricians, dental and pharmacy workers in primary care between May and August 2021.

Real-life users of hormonal or thermal male contraception: An analysis of female partners' motivation, experience, and satisfaction.

Andrology

November 2024

Laboratory of Reproductive Biology-CECOS, Clinical-Biological Centre of Assisted Reproductive Medicine, Hopitaux Universitaires de Marseille, La Conception University Hospital, Marseille, France.

Background: Two male contraceptive methods that inhibit spermatogenesis currently exist: thermal male contraception and hormonal male contraception. Only five studies have been conducted on the acceptability of these methods among men; among women, only the hypothetical acceptability of such a male contraceptive approach as the sole contraception method used by a couple has been evaluated.

Objectives: To evaluate the motivation, experience, and satisfaction of female partners in couples using hormonal male contraception or thermal male contraception as the sole contraception.

[Support and guidance in driving for patients with (or suspected of having) Alzheimer's disease or related diseases: position paper].

New ministerial decree restricts driving motorized vehicles for patients with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Reisberg stage 3, threshold used to contraindicate driving, appears to correspond to a mild stage of major neurocognitive impairment. A single scale gives an idea of the level of risk but does not provide a holistic assessment.

[Driving: What is the relevance and usability of the Reisberg scale in 2023?].

The publication of the decree on the care of people with neurocognitive disorders brought to the fore the Reisberg's Global Deterioration Scale, a scale that only few clinicians use in memory centers or in geriatric. This scale has a number of limitations, not least of which is that it is obsolete, since it does not take into account disease advances in scientific knowledge with biomarkers. Consequently, the stages evoked no longer correspond to current descriptions.

Article Synopsis
  • France is facing a significant crisis with high numbers of hospital geriatric bed closures, which hampers access to care for elderly citizens.
  • A national survey by the French Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology revealed that nearly 35% of geriatric units had closures, impacting an average of 26% of beds, primarily in rehabilitation units.
  • Key reasons for these closures include a shortage of nursing staff, doctors, and nursing aids, with over 90% of the closures lacking defined reopening dates, highlighting the need for improved support and resources for geriatric caregivers.

Background And Objectives: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) can be considered an emerging zoonotic pathogen and is an important cause of acute viral hepatitis in high-income countries. Corsica has been identified as a hyperendemic region for HEV. We aimed to characterize the prevalence of IgG among children and estimate the annual force of infection of HEV.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates fluid intake in ICU patients at risk of negative outcomes due to excessive fluid balance, highlighting the need for fluid optimization beyond traditional resuscitation.
  • Conducted across multiple ICUs in France and Spain, it recorded the types and volumes of fluids administered to patients needing vasopressors or invasive ventilation over a 24-hour period.
  • Results indicate that only 36% of the total fluid volume was essential for body fluid homeostasis, with significant variations in fluid administration based on the specific ICU, suggesting a strong center effect on fluid management practices.

Sandfly-borne phleboviruses are endemic in countries around the Mediterranean Basin and pose a significant health threat for populations, with symptoms spanning from febrile diseases to central nervous system involvement. We carried out a comprehensive cross-sectional screening via microneutralization (MN) assays for a quantitative assessment of neutralizing antibodies (NAs) to seven phleboviruses representing three distinct serocomplexes, using samples previously screened via immunofluorescence assays (IFAs) in Turkey, an endemic region with various phleboviruses in circulation. We detected NAs to three phleboviruses: Toscana virus (TOSV), sandfly fever Naples virus (SFNV), and sandfly fever Sicilian virus (SFSV), while assays utilizing Adana virus, Punique virus, Massilia virus, and Zerdali virus remained negative.
