Since Francis Fontan first introduced the eponymous technique, the Fontan procedure, this type of surgical palliation has allowed thousands of children affected by specific heart malformations to reach adulthood. Nevertheless, abdominal, thoracic, lymphatic and neurologic complications are the price that is paid by these patients. Our review focuses on Fontan-associated liver disease; the purpose is to summarize the current understanding of its physiopathology, the aim of follow-up and the specific radiologic follow-up performed in Europe.

October 2021

Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) Unité Mixte de Recherche (UMR) 1186, Integrative Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy, Gustave Roussy, Fac. de Médecine - Univ. Paris-Sud, Université Paris-Saclay, Villejuif, France.

Since its emergence at the end of 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has spread worldwide at a very rapid pace. While most infected individuals have an asymptomatic or mild disease, a minority, mainly the elderly, develop a severe disease that may lead to a fatal acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS results from a highly inflammatory immunopathology process that includes systemic manifestations and massive alveolar damages that impair gas exchange.

Paris-Sud, Inserm, High-Dimensional Biostatistics for Drug Safety and Genomics, CESP, Villejuif, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic may have affected alcohol use and increased addictive behaviors, specifically examining acute alcohol intoxication (AAI) in France.
  • A study analyzed hospital stays for alcohol abuse from 2018 to 2020, finding a significant decrease in AAI hospitalizations from 2019 to 2020, although in-hospital mortality rates rose during the pandemic, especially during the first lockdown.
  • The findings suggest that fewer hospitalizations could be due to increased healthcare access issues, individuals avoiding care due to COVID-19 fears, and younger individuals reducing social activities, despite a troubling increase in severity and complications related to AAI.

Background: Optimal management of severe trauma patients with active hemorrhage relies on adequate initial resuscitation. Early administration of coagulation factors improves post-traumatic coagulation disorders, and four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) might be useful in this context. Our main hypothesis is that four-factor PCC in addition to a massive transfusion protocol decreases blood product consumption at day 1 in severe trauma patients with major bleeding.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how multi-drug resistant Enterobacterales affect the effectiveness of oral antibiotics for treating febrile urinary tract infections (FUTIs) in children, focusing on β-lactamase profiles and genotypes.
  • A total of 251 ESBL-producing Enterobacterales isolates were analyzed for their susceptibility to various antibiotics, revealing that all were resistant to cefixime and cefpodoxime but that the combination of cefixime with amoxicillin/clavulanate restored susceptibility in most cases.
  • The findings suggest that cefixime combined with amoxicillin/clavulanate is an effective treatment option, with no failures reported, and mecillinam combined with amoxicillin/clavulanate is recommended as an

Myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease.

Lancet Neurol

September 2021

Department of Neurology, Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technische Universität München, Munich, Germany; Munich Cluster for Systems Neurology, Munich, Germany.

Myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is a recently identified autoimmune disorder that presents in both adults and children as CNS demyelination. Although there are clinical phenotypic overlaps between MOGAD, multiple sclerosis, and aquaporin-4 antibody-associated neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) cumulative biological, clinical, and pathological evidence discriminates between these conditions. Patients should not be diagnosed with multiple sclerosis or NMOSD if they have anti-MOG antibodies in their serum.

Experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE) is a well-recognized model for the study of human acquired demyelinating diseases (ADD), a group of inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by inflammation, myelin loss, and neurological impairment of variable severity. In rodents, EAE is typically induced by active immunization with a combination of myelin-derived antigen and a strong adjuvant as complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), containing components of the mycobacterial wall, while myelin antigen alone or associated with other bacterial components, as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), often fails to induce EAE. In contrast to this, EAE can be efficiently induced in non-human primates by immunization with the recombinant human myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (rhMOG), produced in Escherichia coli (E.
