We compared blood pressure (BP) values obtained with a new optical smartphone application (OptiBP™) with BP values obtained using a non-invasive automatic oscillometric brachial cuff (reference method) during the first 2 h of surveillance in a post-anesthesia care unit in patients after non-cardiac surgery. Three simultaneous BP measurements of both methods were recorded every 30 min over a 2-h period. The agreement between measurements was investigated using Bland-Altman and error grid analyses.

New Method to Estimate Central Systolic Blood Pressure From Peripheral Pressure: A Proof of Concept and Validation Study.

Front Cardiovasc Med

December 2021

Equipe 2 CARRES, UR2CA - Unité de Recherche Clinique Côte d'Azur, Université Côte d'Azur UCA, Nice and Service de Médecine Intensive Réanimation, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire l'Archet, Nice, France.

The non-invasive estimation of central systolic blood pressure (cSBP) is increasingly performed using new devices based on various pulse acquisition techniques and mathematical analyses. These devices are most often calibrated assuming that mean (MBP) and diastolic (DBP) BP are essentially unchanged when pressure wave travels from aorta to peripheral artery, an assumption which is evidence-based. We tested a new empirical formula for the direct central blood pressure estimation of cSBP using MBP and DBP only (DCBP = MBP/DBP).

Paris Cardiovascular Research Center (PARCC), Paris Translational Research Center for Organ Transplantation, INSERM, UMR-S970, Université de Paris, 75015 Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The Critical COVID France (CCF) study examined the effects of COVID-19 on 2868 hospitalized patients, focusing on those aged 18-45, who made up 11.2% of the sample.
  • Young patients (18-45 years old) had lower rates of severe outcomes like ICU transfers and in-hospital deaths compared to older patients, but they experienced higher rates of certain cardiovascular issues like pericarditis and myocarditis.
  • Despite lower overall severity, COVID-19 still posed significant cardiovascular risks for young patients, highlighting the importance of understanding its impacts on this age group.

Carriers of germline telomerase-related gene (TRG) mutations can show poor prognosis, with an increase in common hematological complications after lung transplantation (LT) for pulmonary fibrosis. The aim of this study was to describe the outcomes after LT in recipients carrying a germline TRG mutation and to identify the predictors of survival. In a multicenter cohort of LT patients, we retrospectively reviewed those carrying pathogenic TRG variations (n = 38; TERT, n = 23, TERC, n = 9, RTEL1, n = 6) between 2009 and 2018.

December 2021

Institut Jacques Cartier, Institut Cardiovasculaire Paris Sud (ICPS) Ramsay Générale de Santé, 6 avenue du Noyer-Lambert, 91300 Massy, France.

Developed in the late 1980s, rotational atherectomy has raised a lot of hope for its innovative principle of selective ablation, allowing volume reduction (instead of redistribution) of atherosclerotic plaque, while sparing healthy tissue. Long shunned for its disappointing results on restenosis, the Rotablator finally reasserted itself in the 2000s; era of drug eluting stents and coronary angioplasty boom, thus generating emergence of complex lesions. Indeed, the Rotablator has demonstrated an undeniable benefit in complex (type C) and calcified lesions preparation (before stenting), with a procedural success rate of 95%.
