Blood pressure variability: A potential marker of aging.

Ageing Res Rev

September 2022

Gérontopôle de Toulouse, Institut du Vieillissement, CHU de Toulouse, France; UMR INSERM 1295, Université Toulouse III, France.

Aging is characterized by alterations in neuro-cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms, leading to impaired physiological variability patterns. Repeated evidence has shown that increased Blood Pressure Variability (BPV) is associated with organ damage and exerts independent predictive value on several health outcomes: cardiovascular events, neurocognitive impairment, metabolic disorders and typical geriatric syndromes such as sarcopenia and frailty. Accordingly, it may constitute the epiphenomenon of the alterations in homeostatic mechanisms, typical of late life.

Adoptive transfer of T cells genetically engineered to express chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) has demonstrated striking efficacy for the treatment of several hematological malignancies, including B-cell lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myeloma. However, many patients still do not respond to this therapy or eventually relapse after an initial remission. In most solid tumors for which CAR T-cell therapy has been tested, efficacy has been very limited.

How Phosphofructokinase-1 Promotes PI3K and YAP/TAZ in Cancer: Therapeutic Perspectives.

Cancers (Basel)

May 2022

Service de Chirurgie Thoracique, Hôpital Cochin, Hôpitaux Universitaires Paris Centre, APHP, Paris-Descartes University, 75014 Paris, France.

PI3K/AKT is one of the most frequently altered signaling pathways in human cancers, supporting the activation of many proteins sustaining cell metabolism, proliferation, and aggressiveness. Another important pathway frequently altered in cancer cells is the one regulating the YAP/TAZ transcriptional coactivators, which promote the expression of genes sustaining aerobic glycolysis (such as WNT, MYC, HIF-1), EMT, and drug resistance. Of note, the PI3K/AKT pathway can also regulate the YAP/TAZ one.

Université de Paris and Université Paris-Saclay, CEA, UMR Stabilité Génétique Cellules Souches et Radiations, iRCM/IBFJ, Laboratoire des Cellules Souches Germinales, 92265 Fontenay-aux-Roses, France. Electronic address:

Male infertility is responsible for approximately half of all cases of reproductive issues. Spermatogenesis originates in a small pool of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs), which are of interest for therapy of infertility but remain not well defined in humans. Using multiparametric analysis of the side population (SP) phenotype and the α-6 integrin, THY1, and β-2 microglobulin cell markers, we identified a population of human primitive undifferentiated spermatogonia with the phenotype β-2 microglobulin (β-2M)SPα-6THY1, which is highly enriched in stem cells.

Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging

July 2022

Nuclear Medicine Department, APHM, CNRS, Centrale Marseille, Institut Fresnel, Timone Hospital, CERIMED, Aix Marseille Univ, Marseille, France.

Background: This multicentre study aimed to provide a qualitative and consensual description of brain hypometabolism observed through the visual analysis of F-FDG PET images of patients with suspected neurological long COVID, regarding the previously reported long-COVID hypometabolic pattern involving hypometabolism in the olfactory bulbs and other limbic/paralimbic regions, as well as in the brainstem and cerebellum.

Methods: From the beginning of August 2021 to the end of October 2021, the brain F-FDG PET scans of patients referred for suspected neurological long COVID with positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and/or serology tests for SARS-CoV-2 infection were retrospectively reviewed in three French nuclear medicine departments (143 patients; 47.4 years old ± 13.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to find the genetic mutation causing antibiotic resistance in a clinical isolate of Serratia marcescens, particularly after isolating a wild-type strain from the same patient six weeks earlier.
  • Genomic sequencing revealed a specific mutation (690delG) in the cpxA gene, leading to a truncated protein that was responsible for resistance to multiple antibiotics including extended-spectrum cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, and ciprofloxacin.
  • The research also confirmed that restoring the original cpxA gene reversed the resistance, highlighting the importance of the Cpx pathway in bacterial survival against antibiotics.

Impact of COVID-19 on the association between pulse oximetry and arterial oxygenation in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Sci Rep

January 2022

Hôpital Cochin, Service de Médecine Intensive Réanimation, Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, Hôpitaux Universitaires Paris-Centre, 27 rue du faubourg Saint Jacques, 75014, Paris, France.

Managing patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) requires frequent changes in mechanical ventilator respiratory settings to optimize arterial oxygenation assessed by arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO) and saturation (SaO). Pulse oxymetry (SpO) has been suggested as a non-invasive surrogate for arterial oxygenation however its accuracy in COVID-19 patients is unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate the influence of COVID-19 status on the association between SpO and arterial oxygenation.

Why may citrate sodium significantly increase the effectiveness of transarterial chemoembolization in hepatocellular carcinoma?

Drug Resist Updat

December 2021

Department of Digestive and Hepatobiliary Surgery, Hôpital Cochin, Hôpitaux Universitaires Paris Centre, APHP, Paris University, 75014, Paris, France.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents the third cause of cancer death in men worldwide, and its increasing incidence can be explained by the increasing occurrence of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). HCC prognosis is poor, as its 5-year overall survival is approximately 18 % and most cases are diagnosed at an inoperable advanced stage. Moreover, tumor sensitivity to conventional chemotherapeutics (particularly to cisplatin-based regimen), trans-arterial chemoembolization (cTACE), tyrosine kinase inhibitors, anti-angiogenic molecules and immune checkpoint inhibitors is limited.
