One major reason for the failure of advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment is the occurrence of chemoresistance to fluoropyrimidine (Fu)-based chemotherapy. Accumulating evidence indicates that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a critical role in cancerous processes as either oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes. Here, we observed lncRNA TUG1 was associated to the 5-Fu resistance in colorectal cancer.

Aiming at the real intestinal environment, the commonly used feature extraction algorithms are compared and analyzed. The performances of SIFT, BRISK, ORB and FREAK are evaluated from three aspects: feature extraction time, correct matching rate and attitude estimation accuracy under rotation and scaling transformation. ORB binary feature operator has the advantages of fast feature extraction, high correct matching rate, and small estimation error.

Expression levels of retinol-binding protein (RBP) and albumin (Alb) in the kidney of patients with neonatal hydronephrosis were detected to explore whether RBP and Alb can be used as diagnostic indicators for neonatal hydronephrosis. Blood and urine samples from neonates with hydronephrosis in the obstetrics and gynaecology department of Hongqi Hospital Affiliated to Mudanjiang Medical University from January 2016 to January 2018, and healthy newborns were collected. RBP and Alb levels in neonates, and the expression of IL-12 in serum of the mothers were detected by ELISA.

Background: MiRNAs can regulate gene expression directly or indirectly, and long noncoding RNAs as competing endogenous RNA (ceRNAs) can bind to miRNAs competitively and affect mRNA expression. The ceRNA network is still unclear in breast cancer. In this study, a ceRNA network was constructed, and new treatment and prognosis targets and biomarkers for breast cancer were explored.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in tumorigenesis of various cancers. Recent study suggested that miRNAs are involved in the therapeutic functions of radiation during cancer treatment. We found that radiation can decrease the migration and invasion of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells.

The present study aimed to examine whether serum microRNA (miR)-22 may be considered a potential biomarker to differentiate patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) from healthy controls. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction demonstrated that serum miR-22 expression was significantly enhanced in patients with PTC compared with in patients with benign thyroid nodules (BTN) and healthy controls. The expression levels of miR-22 were also increased in the thyroid tissue of patients with PTC compared with in patients with BTN.

Nucleosome binding protein 1 (NSBP1) is identified as a new member of HMGN family and is abnormally overexpressed in a variety of tumors. However, it remains unclear whether NSBP1 is overexpressed and promotes gastric cancer. In this study we employed RNAi mediated knockdown of NSBP1 to investigate potential oncogenic role of NSBP1 in gastric cancer.

Objective: Phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) signaling pathway is related to tumorigenesis by up-regulating survivin. Phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome ten (PTEN) can suppress PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, while DJ-1 is the negative regulator of PTEN. DJ-1 up-regulation is closely correlated with the occurrence, progression, and drug resistance of pancreatic cancer.

The present study, we prepared polysaccharides from Rosa rugosa petals (RRPS) using hot-water extraction and purified the polysaccharides by chromatography to obtain RRPS-1 and RRPS-2. Preliminary structural features of RRPS were characterized by different instrumental methods, such as HPGPC, FT-IR, and GC analysis. The average molecular weights of RRPS-1 and RRPS-2 were 8.

Expression, purification, and evaluation of in vivo anti-fibrotic activity for soluble truncated TGF-β receptor II as a cleavable His-SUMO fusion protein.

World J Microbiol Biotechnol

November 2018

Heilongjiang Province Key Laboratory for Anti-fibrosis Biotherapy, Medical Research Center, Mudanjiang Medical University, Mudanjiang, 157011, People's Republic of China.

Excessive production of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and its binding to transforming growth factor-β receptor type II (TGF-βRII) promotes fibrosis by activation of the TGF-β1-mediated signaling pathway. Thus, the truncated extracellular domain of TGF-βRII (tTβRII) is a promising anti-fibrotic candidate, as it lacks the signal transduction domain. In this work, the native N-terminal tTβRII was prepared as a His-SUMO fusion protein (termed His-SUMO-tTβRII) in Escherichia coli strain BL21 (DE3).

UNBS5162, a novel naphthalimide, is generated by UNBS3157 hydrolysis in physiological saline. In the present study, the effects of UNBS5162 on M14 human melanoma cells were evaluated by Cell Counting Kit‑8 and transwell assays, as well as western blotting. The underlying mechanism of apoptosis induced by UNBS5162 was investigated.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) are highly conserved, endogenous, small and single-stranded RNA molecules that promote the degradation and translational inhibition of specific target mRNAs in order to regulate cell proliferation and differentiation, and organism growth and development. MiR-23a has been demonstrated to function as an oncogene in certain types of tumor. The aim of the present study was to provide a tool for elucidating the mechanisms of action of miR-23a in gastric cancer, and identify the function of miR-23a in a human gastric epithelium cell line, by establishing a human gastric epithelial GES-1 cell line that stably expressed miR-23a.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) mediate the localization, stability, and translation of the target transcripts and fine-tune the physiological functions of the proteins encoded. The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) 2 mRNA-binding protein (IGF2BP, IMP) family comprises three RBPs, IGF2BP1, IGF2BP2, and IGF2BP3, capable of associating with IGF2 and other transcripts and mediating their processing. IGF2BP2 represents the least understood member of this family of RBPs; however, it has been reported to participate in a wide range of physiological processes, such as embryonic development, neuronal differentiation, and metabolism.

Inflammatory genes serve a crucial role in the pathogenesis of inflammation‑associated tumors. However, as recent studies have mainly focused on the effects of single inflammatory genes on colorectal cancer (CRC), but not on the global interactions between genes, the underlying mechanisms between inflammatory genes and CRC remain unclear. In the current study, two inflammation‑associated networks were constructed based on inflammatory genes, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in CRC vs.

Objective: Postmenopausal women possess higher incidence of stroke and worse prognosis. Although estrogen replacement therapy has obvious neuroprotective effects against stroke, it is always accompanied with several adverse effects and undesired outcomes. Genistein, a natural phytoestrogen, has been indicated to be a potential neuroprotective alternative for postmenopausal women against stroke.

The attachment of monocytes to human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMVEs) caused by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) is associated with an early event and the pathological progression of cerebrovascular diseases. Oxytocin (OT) is a human peptide hormone that is traditionally used as a medication to facilitate childbirth. However, little information is available regarding the physiological function of OT in brain endothelial dysfunction.

Background: It has been identified consequences of dysregulation of JAK-STAT signalling, particularly in regard to JAK-STAT signalling that has been shown to have roles in the oncogenesis of several cell types. SOCS3 protein, the negative regulatory protein of JAK-STAT signaling pathway, may also plays critical regulatory roles in cancer initiation and progression. SOCS3 promoter hypermethylation has often been identified in human cancers; however, the precise role of SOCS3 in bladder cancer is unclear.
