Article Synopsis
  • Penicillium italicum (blue mold) is a fungus that causes decay in citrus fruits, even under low temperature storage, and has developed resistance to certain fungicides known as DMI fungicides.
  • The study investigates the genetic basis of this DMI-resistance by comparing two strains of P. italicum—one that is highly resistant (Pi-R) and one that is sensitive (Pi-S), focusing on gene expression changes after treatment with prochloraz, a type of DMI fungicide.
  • Researchers identified 19 genes that were significantly affected by prochloraz in the resistant strain, including genes involved in transport, ergosterol production, and signaling pathways, suggesting a multifaceted mechanism behind the resistance.

The prokaryotic community composition, species diversity and the distribution patterns at various taxonomic levels in a salt lake (Chaka salt lake), solar salterns (Taipei saltworks and Dongfang saltworks), and salt mines (Yuanyongjing salt mine, Xiangyan salt mine, and Dinyuan salt mine) were investigated using clone library or Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The clone library approach revealed that the salt lake harbors low species diversity (H' = 0.98) as compared to the solar saltern (H' = 4.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel 3-benzylcoumarin-imidazolium salts.

Bioorg Med Chem Lett

February 2020

Key Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry for Natural Resource, Ministry of Education and Yunnan Province, School of Chemical Science and Technology, Yunnan University, Kunming 650091, PR China. Electronic address:

A series of novel 3-benzylcoumarin-imidazolium salts were prepared and evaluated in vitro against a panel of human tumor cell lines. The results showed that the existence of 5,6-dimethyl-benzimidazole ring and substitution of the imidazolyl-3-position with a naphthylacyl group were vital for modulating cytotoxic activity. Notably, compound 38 was found to be the most potent derivative with IC values of 2.

Aptamer-Functionalized DNA Origami for Targeted Codelivery of Antisense Oligonucleotides and Doxorubicin to Enhance Therapy in Drug-Resistant Cancer Cells.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2020

State Key Laboratory of Chemo/Bio-Sensing and Chemometrics, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering , Hunan University, Changsha 410082 , P. R. China.

Drug resistance is a major obstacle to the efficient therapy of drug-resistant cancer. To overcome this problem, we constructed a multifunctional DNA origami-based nanocarrier for codelivery of a chemotherapeutic drug (doxorubicin, Dox) and two different antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs; B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl2) and P-glycoprotein (P-gp)) into drug-resistant cancer cells for enhanced therapy. To increase the targeting ability of origami, staple strands with 5'-end extended MUC1 sequences were used in the preparation of aptamer-functionalized origami carrying ASOs (Apt-origami-ASO).

A simple and convenient synthesis of 3-salicyloylquinoline-4-carboxylic esters has been developed through an AlCl-catalyzed reaction of easily available Baylis-Hillman adducts from chromones and isatin-derivatives. This reaction involves esterification, cyclization and ring opening in a one-step process, and provides an efficient approach for easy access to a series of valuable salicyloylquinoline derivatives with high yields. Moreover, this protocol offers several advantages, such as availability of starting materials, economic availability, operational simplicity and mild reaction conditions.

A novel ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction (UA-MSPE) was developed for the separation/preconcentration of trace amounts of pyrethroids (fenpropathrin, fenvalerate, deltamethrin, and bifenthrin) in sample using carbon nanotubes based on FeO magnetic nanoparticles (FeO@CNT MNPs), and high-performance liquid chromatography-UV is described. High recoveries of pyrethroids were obtained at a low MNPs concentration because sonication enhances the contact chances between magnetic nanoparticles and extractable analytes and promotes the extractability of the MSPE process. After the extraction, the adsorbent can be conveniently separated from the sample solution by an external magnet, and the adsorbed analytes were eluted from magnetic FeO@CNT.

Currently, hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is widespread in mainland China and seriously endangers the health of infants and young children. Recently in mainland China, preventing the spread of the disease has entailed vaccination, isolation measures, and virus clean-up in the contaminated environment. However, quantifying and evaluating the efficacy of these strategies on HFMD remains challenging, especially because relatively little research analyses the impact of EV71 vaccination for this disease.

Construction of Fully Substituted 2-Pyridone Derivatives via Four-Component Branched Domino Reaction Utilizing Microwave Irradiation.

J Org Chem

October 2018

Engineering Research Center of Biopolymer Functional Materials of Yunnan, School of Chemistry and Environment , Yunnan Minzu University, Kunming 650500 , P.R. China.

Microwave irradiation, four-component branched domino reaction of methyl acetoacetate/2,4-pentanedione, diethyl malonate, triethyl orthoformate and amines offering an extremely efficient strategy for the construction of fully substituted 2-pyridone derivatives under sustainable conditions is established. This self-sorting branched domino transformation is proposed to proceed separate through N-nucleophilic addition and imine-enamine tautomerization/condensation reaction generated from enamino ester and diethyl ethoxymethylenemalonate, and then would be subjected to an aza-ene reaction and intramolecular cyclization mechanism to afford the 2-pyridones with only water and ethanol as byproducts. The simple experimental procedure, high bond-forming efficiency, step and atom economy, inexpensive readily available starting materials, moderate to excellent yields, and good functional group compatibility are other noteworthy advantages of this method.
