For the study of biological effects of direct current (DC) and extremely low frequency (ELF) electric fields, we have quantitatively analyzed red blood cell (RBC) movement in whole blood. Considering the inhomogeneous distribution of electric fields in vivo, five different electric field distributions were generated under a microscope. For theoretical analyses, we assumed electrophoresis and dielectrophoresis as basic motive forces and obtained the spatial distribution of blood cell velocity.

Portable-type electrostatic-collection radon monitors (RAD7) are often used for in-situ measurements of radon in water. In this study, we evaluated the calibration factors and their uncertainties for two RAD7 monitors based on comparative measurements with the liquid scintillation counting method. In the first experiment, we found that both RAD7 monitors had relatively large uncertainties due to leakage of radon gas that bubbled from the gaps between the lids of the desiccant container and the glass vial.

Although signal-transducing adaptor protein-2 (STAP-2) acts in certain immune responses, its role in B cell receptor (BCR)-mediated signals remains unknown. In this study, we have revealed that BCR-mediated signals, cytokine production and antibody production were increased in STAP-2 knockout (KO) mice compared with wild-type (WT) mice. DiRAS3, also called ARHI, is a RAS (sub)family small GTPase protein that shares 50-60% sequence identity with H-, K-, and N-RAS, with substitutions in key conserved G-box motifs and a unique 34 amino acid extension at its N-terminus. Unlike the RAS proto-oncogenes, DiRAS3 exhibits tumor suppressor properties. DiRAS3 function has been studied through genetics and cell biology, but there has been a lack of understanding of the biochemical and biophysical properties of the protein, likely due to its instability and poor solubility.
