For the study of biological effects of direct current (DC) and extremely low frequency (ELF) electric fields, we have quantitatively analyzed red blood cell (RBC) movement in whole blood. Considering the inhomogeneous distribution of electric fields in vivo, five different electric field distributions were generated under a microscope. For theoretical analyses, we assumed electrophoresis and dielectrophoresis as basic motive forces and obtained the spatial distribution of blood cell velocity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess inter-rater reliability and workload for creating accurate training data in the clinical evaluation of mammographic positioning for deep learning.
Methods: A total of 107 mammographic images without lesions were labeled by two certified radiologic technologists in seven items: six clinical image evaluation criteria in positioning and breast tissue density. The kappa coefficient was calculated as an indicator of interrater reliability.

The clinical usefulness of tumor markers alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and des-gamma carboxyprothrombin (DCP) in the early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC), including those with marker decline after antiviral therapy, is limited. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are expected to complement detection; however, their details remain unknown. Our prospective pilot study aimed to improve the surveillance of HCC high-risk LC patients by propensity scoring with tumor markers and additional predictors.

Portable-type electrostatic-collection radon monitors (RAD7) are often used for in-situ measurements of radon in water. In this study, we evaluated the calibration factors and their uncertainties for two RAD7 monitors based on comparative measurements with the liquid scintillation counting method. In the first experiment, we found that both RAD7 monitors had relatively large uncertainties due to leakage of radon gas that bubbled from the gaps between the lids of the desiccant container and the glass vial.

A distinctive pathological feature of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the aberrant accumulation of extracellular matrix components in the alveoli in abnormal remodeling and reconstruction following scarring of the alveolar structure. The current antifibrotic agents used for IPF therapy frequently result in systemic side effects because these agents are distributed, through the blood, to many different tissues after oral administration. In contrast to oral administration, the intrapulmonary administration of aerosolized drugs is believed to be an efficient method for their direct delivery to the focus sites in the lungs.

Although signal-transducing adaptor protein-2 (STAP-2) acts in certain immune responses, its role in B cell receptor (BCR)-mediated signals remains unknown. In this study, we have revealed that BCR-mediated signals, cytokine production and antibody production were increased in STAP-2 knockout (KO) mice compared with wild-type (WT) mice. Phosphorylation of tyrosine-protein kinase LYN Y508 was reduced in STAP-2 KO B cells after BCR stimulation.

DiRAS3, also called ARHI, is a RAS (sub)family small GTPase protein that shares 50-60% sequence identity with H-, K-, and N-RAS, with substitutions in key conserved G-box motifs and a unique 34 amino acid extension at its N-terminus. Unlike the RAS proto-oncogenes, DiRAS3 exhibits tumor suppressor properties. DiRAS3 function has been studied through genetics and cell biology, but there has been a lack of understanding of the biochemical and biophysical properties of the protein, likely due to its instability and poor solubility.
