Reversibly photoswitchable chemical tools have aided in the development of novel approaches in the biomedical field. The visible region of light should be ideal for the biological application of this approach because of its low phototoxicity and deep penetration depth compared to ultraviolet light. Herein, we report a photoswitchable centromere-associated protein E (CENP-E) inhibitor, which is controllable with low-energy blue-green light (around 500 nm) illumination.

A photochemical reaction mediated by light-activated molecules (photosensitizers) in photodynamic therapy (PDT) causes molecular oxygen to be converted into highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are beneficial for cancer therapy. As the active oxygen consumer and the primary regulator of apoptosis, mitochondria are known as an important target for optimizing PDT outcomes. However, most of the clinically used photosensitizers exhibited a poor tumor accumulation profile as well as lack of mitochondria targeting ability.

Pairwise interactions are fundamental drivers of collective behavior-responsible for group cohesion. The abiding question is how each individual influences the collective.
