Background: Mesalamine is the first-line drug for treating mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC); however, some patients develop symptoms of intolerance. Although several desensitization methods have been reported, these desensitization regimens were rather complicated for physicians to prescribe in daily clinical practice; therefore, it has not yet become a major therapeutic option for intolerance patients. Thus, we developed an alternative desensitization protocol.

Aim: Hypothermia-associated pancreatitis lacks comprehensive understanding owing to limited studies exploring its mechanism, epidemiology, risk factors, and outcomes. We aimed to investigate the frequency, characteristics, and predictive factors associated with the development of acute pancreatitis in patients with accidental hypothermia.
Methods: This study comprised a post hoc analysis of data from a multicenter prospective observational study (ICE-CRASH study) conducted in 36 tertiary emergency hospitals in Japan.

Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between preoperative whole-joint imaging evaluation of the knee with patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures after cartilage restoration surgery (mosaicplasty, osteochondral allograft transplantation, matrix autologous chondrocyte implantation).
Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent knee articular cartilage restoration at our institution from 2014 to 2020. The patients' knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was evaluated with the Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS) and semiquantitative synovial inflammation imaging biomarkers of the preoperative MRI.

The basal ganglia play a crucial role in action selection by facilitating desired movements and suppressing unwanted ones. The substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), a key output nucleus, facilitates movement through disinhibition of the superior colliculus (SC). However, its role in action suppression, particularly in primates, remains less clear.

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury often leads to posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA), despite ACL reconstruction (ACLR). Medial meniscal extrusion (MME) is implicated in PTOA progression but remains understudied after ACL injury and ACLR.
Hypothesis/purpose: It was hypothesized that MME would increase longitudinally after ACL injury and ACLR, with greater changes in the ipsilateral knee compared with the contralateral knee, leading to cartilage degeneration.

Background: This study aims to digitalize surgical maneuvers in ESS using a motion capture system under standardized conditions provided by 3D printed-sinus models.
Methodology: Forty-seven otolaryngologists performed ESS on 3D printed models manufactured from computed tomography (CT) images of actual patients. Participants were classified to 3 groups according to the objective structured technical skills assessment score.

Background: The incidence of antipsychotic-induced weight gain (AIWG) is difficult to predict in real-world practice because various factors influence it. This study aimed to explore background and medication-related factors associated with weight gain in patients newly prescribed with antipsychotic medication.
Methods: This nationwide, multicenter, prospective cohort study was conducted in Japan.

Objective: This study investigated the risk factors and management of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) after hepatectomy.
Background: PVT after hepatectomy can cause liver dysfunction and portal hypertension, and may be fatal. However, it has not been sufficiently investigated.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify surgical site infection (SSI) risk factors after anal reconstruction surgery in patients with anorectal malformations (ARMs).
Methods: This retrospective analysis from January 2013 to December 2022, including all pediatric surgical facilities in Hokkaido, Japan, examined consecutive patients with ARMs, excluding cloacal cases, regarding perioperative and SSI factors during their initial anal reconstruction surgeries.
Results: This study involved 157 cases of major clinical groups and 7 cases of rare/regional variants, among whom 4% developed SSIs.

Leukemia stem cells (LSCs), capable of simultaneous self-renewal and differentiation, are resistant to chemotherapy and the cause of relapse in refractory cases of leukemia. As a method to rapidly generate LSCs has not been established, research on LSCs as therapeutic targets has been hampered. Here, we demonstrate that K562 leukemia cells acquired LSC properties with increase in stemness markers such as CD34, Oct3/4, and Nanog and metabolic alterations towards OXPHOS by culturing cells on synthetic polymer hydrogels.

Background: Early detection of gastric cancer can play a key role in improving prognosis. Recently, light-emitting diodes (LED) have been developed as novel endoscopic systems. However, the differences in the visibility of gastric neoplastic lesions between LED and laser endoscopy remains unclear.

An 82-year-old man presented with acute progressive disturbance of consciousness. We suspected autoimmune limbic encephalitis because of abnormal magnetic resonance imaging findings in the bilateral temporal lobes and cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis. The patient tested positive for anti-Tr/Delta/Notch-like epidermal growth factor-related receptor (DNER) antibodies, and a tissue biopsy revealed complications of anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

During pediatric cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) for congenital heart disease, systemic hemodynamics dramatically change, which also causes changes in the cerebral hemodynamics. One of the representative methods in bedside monitoring for the estimation of cerebral hemodynamics during pediatric cardiac surgery is transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD). However, there seem to be few reports on the changes in TCD findings in such operations, especially in cyanotic children.

Background: Wearable devices can simultaneously collect data on multiple items in real time and are used for disease detection, prediction, diagnosis, and treatment decision-making. Several factors, such as diet and exercise, influence blood glucose levels; however, the relationship between blood glucose and these factors has yet to be evaluated in real practice.
Objective: This study aims to investigate the association of blood glucose data with various physiological index and nutritional values using wearable devices and dietary survey data from PhysioNet, a public database.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells are a major new treatment option for children, adolescents, and young adults (CAYA) patients with relapsed and refractory (R/R) B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). Therefore, accumulating evidence from real-world experiences of CAR-T outcomes in various regions worldwide is important, particularly when comparing outcomes of patients with differing medical and ethnic backgrounds. More than 5 years have passed since tisagenlecleucel was approved in Japan.

Background: Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) is one of the most frequent craniofacial disorder which could associate with a wide range of craniofacial complication. In order to perform comprehensive care of CL/P patients, it is crucial to elucidate the link of CL/P and general clinical conditions. This study aims to elucidate the relationships between medical history of different CL/P types and infectious diseases to serve as a reference for the comprehensive care of patients with CL/P.

Radiation therapy (RT) rarely induces tumor regression at untreated metastatic sites, the so-called abscopal effect. A syngeneic tumor (EG7) transplanted into a Th1-dominant mouse strain (C57BL/6) regressed significantly on the treated side and less on the contralateral side after RT. Additional subcutaneous administration of ARNAX, a non-inflammatory adjuvant, further accelerated tumor regression on the untreated side.

White light imaging (WLI) can sometimes miss early upper gastrointestinal (UGI) neoplasms, particularly minimal changes and flat lesions. Moreover, endoscopic diagnosis of UGI neoplasia is strongly influenced by the condition of the surrounding mucosa. Recently, image-enhanced endoscopy techniques have been developed and used in clinical practice; one of which is linked color imaging (LCI), which has an expanded color range for better recognition of slight differences in mucosal color and enables easy diagnosis and differentiation of noncancerous mucosa from carcinoma.
