Introduction: The adversities faced by youths living with HIV (YLWH) are manifold, resulting not only from the health impact but also from society's response to HIV and the people living with it. This study sought to explore these youths' perceptions and representations of what promotes resilience.
Methods: Photovoice methodology was chosen to elicit first-person accounts that are grounded in lived experience and experiential knowledge.

Objective: To investigate whether adherence to the adapted Mediterranean Diet Score for Adolescents (MDS_A) and the adapted Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for Adolescents (KIDMED_A) is associated with better food/nutrient intakes and nutritional biomarkers.
Design: The Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) study is a cross-sectional study aiming to obtain comparable data on a variety of nutritional and health-related parameters in European adolescents aged 12·5-17·5 years.
Setting: Nine European countries.

Aim: This paper aims to identify barriers that frail community-dwelling older adults experience regarding access to formal care and support services.
Background: Universal access to healthcare has been set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a main goal for the post-2015 development agenda. Nevertheless, regarding access to care, particular attention has to be paid to the so-called vulnerable groups, such as (frail) older adults.

The laboratory reproduction test with the predatory mite Hypoaspis aculeifer is currently a mandatory test in the new EU data requirements for prospective environmental risk assessment of Plant Protection Products (PPPs). However, the low sensitivity often shown by this mite towards PPPs, when compared to other invertebrates (namely Folsomia candida and Eisenia fetida), makes the test with this species not very useful in the lower tier test battery. However, the current test protocol only considers exposure to contaminants via contaminated soil, disregarding exposure via contaminated food and does not take into account the fact that H.

Most research on (multidimensional) frailty focuses on deficits and risks of adverse outcomes. However, frail older people can still report positive outcomes, such as a relatively high QoL. In order to develop more positively oriented prevention strategies, this exploratory study aimed (a) to identify characteristics related to QoL among frail older people; and (b) to explain discrepancies between higher and lower levels of QoL, with a specific focus on strengths frail older people with a higher QoL still may have.

In order to provide proactive care and support for older people attention is needed for the prevention of frailty among older adults. Subsequently, accurate case finding of those who are more at risk of becoming frail is crucial to undertake specific preventive actions. This study investigates frailty and risk profiles of frailty among older people in order to support proactive detection.

Considering the increasing life expectancy of people with intellectual disabilities (ID), the importance of cooperation between services for people with ID and elderly care services has been stressed in Flanders and the Netherlands, as well as internationally. However, the prevalence, intensity and content of such a cooperation are yet unknown. In order to gain information to address this issue, an online-survey was delivered to directors of all nursing homes in Flanders (n = 781).

Purpose: Breakfast consumption has been recommended as part of a healthy diet. Recently, ready-to-eat cereals (RTEC) became more popular as a breakfast item. Our aim was to analyse the dietary characteristics of an RTEC breakfast in European adolescents and to compare them with other breakfast options.

Background: As often only parents are addressed, studying parent-child agreement and its explanatory factors is crucial in gaining accurate information on young children's emotional problems.
Method: Parental and children's reports of children's emotional problems (anger, anxiety, sadness) and children's reports of life events were gathered between February and June, 2010 from 464 Belgian nonclinical children 5-10 years old.
Results: Children reported more emotional problems than their parents.

The present study investigated the role of socio-demographic and lifestyle determinants on the nutrition knowledge of Belgian women and the association between their knowledge and dietary behaviour. A total of 803 women, aged 18-39 years, were included in a cross-sectional study and completed a general and nutrition knowledge questionnaire and a 2-day food record. Their height and weight were measured under standardised conditions.

This paper focuses on public trust of Belgian Muslims in information sources of halal meat and their confidence in key actors and institutions for monitoring and controlling the halal meat chain. Cross-sectional consumer data were collected through a survey with 367 Muslims during the summer of 2006 in Belgium. Findings reveal that Islamic institutions and especially the Islamic butcher receive in general most confidence for monitoring and controlling the halal status of meat, and for communicating about halal meat.

Fusarium wilts, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum, are important diseases of horticultural and agricultural crops and lead to significant yield losses. The pathogen infects the roots and colonizes the vascular tissue, leading to wilting and finally death of the plant. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of amendment of green compost and a Trichoderma hamatum strain against Fusarium wilt of radish.

Fusarium species cause not only root, stem and ear rot with severe reductions in crop yield, they produce also toxic secondary metabolites (mycotoxins) such as deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA). During several growing seasons the presence of Fusarium spp was followed up. DON and ZEA were determined and related to infection levels.

The manner in which to discriminate between genetically modified (GM) versus non-modified foodstuffs is based on the presence of newly introduced genes at the protein or DNA level. Current available methods are almost exclusively based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). These methods consist of three steps: DNA isolation, amplification of the desired DNA fragment and visualisation of the obtained amplification products.

Without foliage destruction an efficient harvest is impossible. Potatoes for the fresh market are often harvested when the foliage is still heavy green due to tuber size and starch content that must be limited. Tubers from immature vines are typically very susceptible to skinning and mechanical injury during harvest.

A total of 94 isolates of Phytophthora infestans were collected from disease outbreaks in commercial potato crops and private gardens in 2002 and 2003. The isolates were recovered successfully from single lesions of diseased potato foliage. Not from all isolates pure cultures were obtained due to contaminations with Fusarium species and bacteria.

Sound pressure level estimates of running speech must accurately reflect everyday communication in an appropriate unit of measure. Several factors may influence the overall sound pressure level of speech under everyday circumstances, such as age of the listener and speaker, speaking distance, surrounding noise and room acoustics. It is very difficult to estimate how all these factors will combine to affect speech intensity in a given situation.

The biological control of fungal diseases in agriculture and horticulture based on induced resistance can become an attractive alternative to traditional fungicides. The principle is that all plants have genetic information about resistance mechanisms against pathogens such as fungi, viruses, and bacteria. The purpose of our research is to activate these resistance factors that are latent present in the plant, by treating the plants with abiotic and biotic agents (elicitors) to activate defence responses.
