SGLT2i as a First-line Antihyperglycemic in the Management of Type 2 Diabetes in the Context of Indians: A Systematic Review and Consensus.

Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have been used for almost a decade and have proven to be effective not only in managing Type 2 diabetes (T2D), but their cardio and renal protective features make them very useful in managing patients with risk of multiple comorbidities. This systematic review was undertaken by the authors because there is no evidence currently available in India that has studied the suitability of SGLT2i as a first-line agent in patients newly diagnosed with T2D in India.

Materials And Methods: First, literature was searched to identify features that are considered important when deciding on a first-line agent for managing T2D.

Diagnosis of a recurred lesion in dermatophytosis patients after 2 weeks of antifungal therapy: A prospective observational study.

Unlabelled: Few researchers believe that various risk factors may complicate the course of dermatophytosis and/or develop various dermatoses unrelated to fungal infection at the previous lesion site. However, there is a paucity of studies that analyzed the diagnosis of lesions that recurred at the treated site of dermatophytosis.

Bempedoic Acid for Lipid Management in the Indian Population: An Expert Opinion.

Lipid-lowering is a central theme in the management of patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), with statins being currently used as the first-line lipid-lowering agent (LLAs). Bempedoic acid (BA) has been recently approved for lipid management in ASCVD/HeFH patients. This expert opinion paper brings out the essential concept to assess the current place of BA in the Indian population.

Clinical Profile and Outcomes of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children: A Multicentric Observational Study.

Background and objective Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a postinfectious, generalized, hyperimmune state and is potentially lethal. There is scarce data on the clinical presentation and epidemiology of MIS-C in India. In light of this, we conducted this study to describe clinical presentations and outcomes in children diagnosed with MIS-C.

A fulminant case of Epstein-Barr Virus encephalitis with multiorgan dysfunction.

Epstein-Barr Virus also known as Human herpesvirus 4 usually causes infectious mononucleosis which is a benign disease with mild or no symptoms. Death due to Epstein-Barr Virus infections is extremely rare. We present a case of fulminant Epstein-Barr Virus encephalitis who developed multiorgan dysfunction on second day and succumbed within 52 h of symptom onset.

Prophylaxis for preventing venous thromboembolism in knee arthroscopy and soft tissue reconstruction: consensus statements from an international panel of experts.

Purpose: There is a lack of consensus regarding need for Venous Thrombo Embolism (VTE) prophylaxis following arthroscopic knee surgery and open soft tissue knee reconstruction. Clear cut guidelines like ones for trauma surgery and arthroplasty do not exist and the published literature is limited to case reports with a few society guidelines. Given this lack of consensus, we conducted a modified Delphi questionnaire of international experts to provide recommendations on this topic.

Phacoemulsification vs manual small incision cataract surgery in eyes affected by pseudo exfoliation syndrome with grade II and III cataracts.

Purpose: To compare the postoperative alteration of central corneal thickness (CCT) and visual outcomes between phacoemulsification (group A) and manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) (group B) in grade II and III nuclear cataracts (NS II and III) with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXF).

Methods: It is a double masked prospective randomised interventional study. A total of 60 eyes of 60 patients were assigned randomly to either the phacoemulsification (group A) or MSICS (group B) groups.

Safety and Efficacy of a New Posterior Chamber Phakic Intraocular Lens in Cases of High Myopia: Early Results.

Purpose: To demonstrate the visual outcomes of a foldable, hydroxy ethyl-methacrylate, single-piece, posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (pIOL).

Study Type: Retrospective study.

Materials And Methods: Patients presenting with moderate to high myopia who underwent surgical correction with a posterior chamber phakic IOL (refractive intraocular lens, phakic intraocular lens, Appasamy Associates, Chennai, India) were retrospectively reviewed.

Escherichia coli, a common constituent of benign prostate hyperplasia-associated microbiota induces inflammation and DNA damage in prostate epithelial cells.

Background: The role of microbiota in the pathophysiology of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), especially in creating an inflammatory milieu may not be avoided. The major objectives of this study were to investigate the microbial composition of BPH tissues, its association with inflammation and check the effect of clinically isolated bacteria on prostate epithelial cells.

Methods: The study includes 36 patients with a pathological diagnosis of BPH.

Refractive outcomes of implantation of an implantable phakic copolymer lens with peripheral holes in the intraocular posterior chamber in moderate to high myopia patients: a single-surgeon series.

Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of implanting implantable phakic copolymer lenses (IPCLs) with peripheral optic holes in the intraocular posterior chamber in Indian patients with moderate to high myopia.

Methods: Seventy-five eyes of 50 patients who underwent IPCL implantation were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative parameters, such as subjective refraction, anterior chamber depth (measured using a pentacam), and white-to-white diameter were measured.

Unusual case of ruptured posterior lenticonus.

A 14-year-old boy presented with a report of sudden-onset loss of vision in the right eye for the previous 10 days. The patient was diagnosed with a total cataract and ruptured posterior lenticonus. Lenticular aspiration was performed with an irrigation/aspiration probe.

Background: Previous studies have shown the effect of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on enhanced cancer cells' growth and metastasis. However, the effect of LPS on prostate cancer (PCa) cells metastasis has not been investigated in details. This study aimed to investigate the functional role of LPS on PCa cells metastasis and determine the effect of dexamethasone (DEX) on this event.

An unusual case of corneal lipoma.

A 24-year-old male presented with a painless yellowish lesion on the nasal part of his cornea that extended to the paracentral area. Without a confirmed clinical diagnosis, the patient was advised surgical removal of the lesion. The lesion showed a smooth, elevated anterior surface without any signs of inflammation.

Background & Objectives: Wheezing is a common problem in children under five with acute respiratory infections (ARIs). Viruses are known to be responsible for a considerable proportion of ARIs in children. This study was undertaken to know the viral aetiology of wheezing among the children less than five years of age, admitted to a tertiary care hospital in eastern India.

A 17-year-old boy presented with sudden loss of vision in the left eye (OS) for 3 days. He was diagnosed with acute hydrops following keratoconic progression in OS. The patient was initially started on topical medical therapy, including steroids and hypertonic eye drops; showing no signs of resolution.

A middle-aged woman presented in shock with bleeding per rectum for 2 days without any significant past medical or surgical illness. Abdominal sonography, oesophagogastroduodenoscopy and sigmoidocolonoscopy were unremarkable. Despite 6 units of blood transfusion, 3000 mL of plasma expanders and ionotropes, the arterial pressure gradually decreased.
