ZK7 is thought to be involved in the inhibitory effect of vascular endothelial growth factor on apoptotic cell death in human hematopoietic cells. In the present study, we examined the effects of ZK7 on human head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). The expression levels of messenger RNA for ZK7 in HNSCC clinical specimens exposed to platinum drugs and/or ionizing radiation were found to be higher than those in non-exposed specimens (P=0.

Background/aims: Polymorphism of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (ecNOS) gene may be involved in renal disease. Recently, T(-786)-->C polymorphism affecting ecNOS gene transcription has been reported. To clarify the role of T(-786)-->C polymorphism in renal disease, we investigated hemodialysis patients and healthy controls for this polymorphism and we compared its frequency with that of intron 4 polymorphism in the hemodialysis patients.

Background: Although there are several established methods used to evaluate esophageal motility, none allows for direct observation of esophageal wall motion. Esophageal dysmotility is thought to contribute to reflux esophagitis (RE). The aim of this study was to evaluate esophageal wall motility by endosonography using a miniature ultrasonographic probe (MUP) in patients with RE.

Patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) often have abnormalities of lipid metabolism or coagulation and fibrinolysis, these patients may thus be more susceptible to atherosclerosis than those on hemodialysis. It has been reported that hypercoagulability and hyperfibrinolysis are correlated with abnormalities of lipid metabolism. Therefore, we investigated the effect of a decrease in lipids on the coagulation and fibrinolysis system in CAPD patients with hyperlipidemia who received lipid-lowering therapy.

Previous studies have suggested that spinal cord compression by the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs during neck flexion cause cervical flexion myelopathy (CFM). However, the exact pathophysiology of CFM is still unknown, and surgical treatment for CFM remains controversial. We examined retrospectively patients with CFM based on studies of the clinical features, neuroradiological findings, and neurophysiological assessments.

This review article focused on the primary neurotransmitters involved in transmission from the otolith to the vestibular nucleus (VN), especially in relation to the neurotransmission to the VN neurons (gravity-sensitive neurons) activated by tilt stimulation. The medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) neurons were classified in 8 types (alpha-theta) according to the patterns in response to the clockwise and counterclockwise tilt-stimulations. The tilt-induced firing was inhibited by GDEE (a non-selective glutamate receptor antagonist) and/or atropine (a muscarinic receptor antagonist).

We present a case of a 39-year-old woman with sporadic tuberous sclerosis (TSC), whose chest radiograph demonstrated bilateral diffuse nodular shadowing. A transbronchial lung biopsy specimen revealed the possibility of multiple atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (AAH), which had not been reported in TSC. Thoracoscopic lung biopsy was, therefore, performed.

We examined the relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C expression and lymph node metastases in gastric carcinomas invading the submucosa. Of the six human gastric carcinoma cell lines, two constitutively expressed VEGF-C mRNA. In three of 12 gastric biopsy specimens (25%), VEGF-C mRNA was detected in tumour tissues, but not in corresponding normal mucosa by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
