In recent years, laparoscopic surgery has attracted attention as a minimally invasive type of surgery because of the small surgical wounds and early recovery it provides. We carry out this technique on the basis of volume data that we make use of in multi-slice CT imaging technology in laparoscopic nephrectomy by the retroperitoneal approach, and we have created CT virtual laparoscopy by virtual endoscopic display as an intra-operative navigatior with an image analysis system. We provide information on detailed vascular anatomy to form intra-operative images that act as similar support images.

Although one-dimensional densitometry has been widely performed for linac dosimetry, it is a time-consuming, labor-intensive procedure. We studied a new densitometry system (DD-System) that consists of a personal computer and common flatbed-type scanner, with regard to its usefulness for daily QC checks in comparison with conventional densitometry. The spatial resolution of the DD-System is very high, and its accuracy of measurements of field size and flatness are equivalent to those of a conventional system at an optical density <2.

Multidetector row CT is a feasible diagnostic tool in pre- and postoperative liver partial transplantation. We can assess vascular anatomy and liver parenchyma as well as volumetry, which provide useful information for both donor selection and surgical planning. Disorders of the vascular and biliary systems are carefully observed in recipients.

We investigated why surgery alone provides for a benign clinical course in patients with desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma and astrocytoma (DIG/A). The clinical course of 4, less than six-month-old girls, surgically treated at our institutions, was evaluated retrospectively. All presented with the clinical symptom of increasing head circumference.

The aim of this study was to clarify whether the pit pattern on the surface of submucosal colorectal carcinoma is associated with level of invasion. We examined the VN pit-pattern (loss or decrease of pits with an amorphous structure) area of the tumor surface in 18 submucosal carcinomas that were classified based on gross appearance as either superficial or broad based sessile polypoid tumors. Pit pattern determination was made according to a previously reported system.

A 3-month-old boy and a 29-year-old woman presented with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) following therapy for primary malignant brain tumor. Both received intensive alkylating agent doses for induction and maintenance chemotherapy combined with craniospinal or cranial radiation for medulloblastoma and anaplastic astrocytoma, respectively. They developed refractory anemia and pancytopenia.

Article Synopsis
  • A 7-year-old boy presented with a rare case of pineoblastoma characterized by a large central cyst and symptoms such as worsening headache and upward gaze palsy.
  • Imaging studies (CT and MRI) revealed a peripherally calcified, irregular mass with varying signal intensities, especially showing ringed enhancement after gadolinium contrast.
  • The discussion focuses on the differential diagnosis of cystic tumors in the pineal region, including the identification of pineoblastomas.

Our study of germ cell tumors (GCT) of the central nervous system (CNS) investigated the relationship between tumor histology and patient serum titers of human chorionic gonadotropin (HGC) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Thirty-five patients were enrolled. Their serum titers of HCG (mlU/ml) and/or AFP (ng/ml) before initial treatment were available, as were tumor specimens obtained before the administration of adjuvant therapy.

Objectives: To clarify the virological state of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1-infected patients, we compared the plasma HIV-1 RNA copy number (plasma viral load (VL)), viral DNA and mRNA burdens in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and the other clinical predictors.

Methods: One hundred and thirty-one samples of PBMCs and plasma from 26 patients infected with HIV-1 were obtained during 20 consecutive months for the measurement of VL, viral DNA and mRNA burdens, and CD4 positive (CD4+) cells count. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method with detection by solid phase DNA was utilized for the assay of VL, viral DNA and mRNA burdens.

Ritonavir (RTV), a protease inhibitor, and carbamazepine (CBZ), an anticonvulsant, were administered concurrently to a patient who had human immunodeficiency virus infection and epilepsy. The combination resulted in elevated serum concentrations of CBZ, with accompanying vomiting, vertigo, and transient liver dysfunction. After discontinuing RTV and reducing the dosage of CBZ, the serum concentration of CBZ returned to the optimal range, symptoms subsided, and liver function returned to baseline.

Early superficial colorectal carcinoma (CRC) has been commonly detected by routine colonoscopic examination in Japan. A series of 769 early CRCs and 4821 adenomas were diagnosed by colonoscopy at Hiroshima University Medical Hospital between 1991 and 1998. Of early CRCs, macroscopically superficial early CRCs accounted for 209 lesions (28%).
