Ease of transmission and exceptionally high mortality rates make pathogen-based infections an ongoing global threat. Herein, a facile bacterial elimination process is described which is based on the photodynamic activity of fullerenes composed of light-harvesting antenna molecules integrated into liposome membranes. This was done to expand the absorption capabilities of fullerene derivatives.

Toward the design and manipulation of innovative materials, we propose a new concept called "model-based research (MBR)". In MBR, measurable physical and chemical properties of materials are mathematically modelled by explanatory parameters obtained by computer simulation from an atomistic point of view. To demonstrate the potential of MBR, we modelled the molecular weights of a series of polysilsesquioxanes with respect to the HO/silane molar ratio employed for the polymerization of monomers bis(triethoxysilyl)methane, ethane, ethylene, and acetylene (BTES-M, -E1, -E2, and -E3), as an example.

An optical sensor with the ability to detect and determine water over a wide concentration range is highly desirable in the laboratory and industry. Here the sensitivity and spectral responses of an intramolecular charge transfer-type colorimetric and fluorescence sensor with β-carboline structure are tuned and improved significantly over various water contents in the organic solvent by fusion with an electron-donating juloidine structure and complexation with boron trifluoride (BF). The sensors, ET-1 and ET-1-BF, developed in this study can respond differently depending on water content.

Transition metal oxides are known as the active materials for capacitors. As a class of transition metal oxide, Magnéli phase TiO is particularly attractive because of its excellent conductivity. This work investigated the electrochemical characteristics of TiO and its composite with reduced graphene oxide (rGO).

The antibiotic penicillin G cannot be completely incorporated into hydrophobic lipid-membranes owing to its hydrophilicity. Through modification with a hydrophobic and photolabile protecting group, penicillin G was effectively incorporated into liposomes and released by photoirradiation at 365 nm.

Anionic tetrakis(4-sulfophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS) interacts with liposomal surfaces composed of neutral diacylphosphatidylcholine at high lipid concentrations. TPPS interacted with liposomal surfaces through four contact points. The association constant was obtained to be 9.

In recent years, colloidal arrays of submicrometer-sized monodisperse particles used as structurally colored coatings have drawn great attention due to their non-bleaching properties and low impact on human health and the environment. In this paper, structurally colored coating films were fabricated using monodisperse SiO particles the cathodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique. The addition of a strong polycation, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), enables the cathodic EPD of SiO particles and carbon black (CB) additives.

Biodegradation rates of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in spilled oil stranded on tidal flats were evaluated using model reactors to clarify the effects of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) on the biodegradation of PAHs in stranded oil on tidal flat with special emphasis on the relationship between dissolution rates of PAHs into water and viscosity of NAPL. Biodegradation of PAHs in NAPL was limited by the dissolution rates of PAHs into water. Biodegradation rate of chrysene was smaller than that of acenaphtene and phenanthrene due to the smaller dissolution rates.
