Background: Colon cancer (CC) cells can exhibit stemness and expansion capabilities, which contribute to resistance to conventional chemotherapies. Aberrant expression of CBX8 has been identified in many types of cancer, but the cause of this aberrant CBX8 expression and whether CBX8 is associated with stemness properties in CC remain unknown.
Methods: qRT-PCR and IHC were applied to examine CBX8 levels in normal and chemoresistant CC tissues.

The low-fear model of primary psychopathy has been supported by empirical findings such as attenuated physiological arousal in anticipation of threatening stimuli. The somatic marker hypothesis proposes that salient changes in the bodily state are processed as signals of whether a situation is good or bad and guide an individual to avoid potential adverse consequences. The present study aimed to elucidate the role that attenuated physiological arousal plays in the relationship between primary psychopathy and fairness norm violations both under the threat of punishment and under no potential for punishment.

Across the world, there has been a movement from traditional to modern eating, including a movement of traditional eating patterns from their origin culture to new cultures, and the emergence of new foods and eating behaviors. This trend toward modern eating is of particular significance because traditional eating has been related to positive health outcomes and sustainability. Yet, there is no consensus on what constitutes traditional and modern eating.

Introduction: The Surveillance for Colorectal Endoscopic Neoplasia Detection and Management in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients: International Consensus Recommendations guidelines recommend surveillance colonoscopy instead of colectomy after the complete removal of "endoscopically resectable" dysplastic lesions in ulcerative colitis (UC). There are no studies on long-term outcomes of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for UC-associated neoplasia (UCAN). We aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of ESD for UC-associated dysplasia (UCAD) during long-term follow-up.

The 2011 Tohoku earthquake drastically changed human activities in some regions of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The subsequent tsunami damage and radioactive pollution from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant resulted in the evacuation of humans, and abandonment of agricultural lands, allowing population expansion of wildlife into areas formally inhabited by domesticated livestock. Unintentional escape of domesticated pigs into wildlife inhabited environments also occurred.

The relationship between the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2 (ERK1/2), one of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), and mammalian skeletal muscle fiber phenotype is unclear. We looked at this relationship in three in vivo conditions in male Wistar rats. First, the levels of phosphorylated (active) ERK1/2 protein were closely associated with the fiber type composition of sedentary rat hindlimb muscles: highest in the superficial portion of the gastrocnemius (100% fast fibers), lower in the plantaris (~ 80% fast fibers), and lowest in the soleus (~ 15% fast fibers).

Serrated adenocarcinoma (SAC) is considered the end stage of the serrated neoplasia pathway. Although SAC prognosis is not widely recognized, the serrated pathway-associated subtype consistently exhibits unfavorable prognosis in genetic studies. Herein, we classified molecularly distinct subtypes of serrated adenocarcinomas and clarified their associated clinicopathological characteristics and genetic changes.

Aggregated transfer factors (T; m kg) are often used to predict radionuclide activity concentrations in biota (Bq kg) from soil contamination levels (Bq m). Inherently large uncertainties in T values severely limit their predictive power. Many published T values have been derived from radionuclide deposition onto soil following weapons fallout, or the accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima.

Traditional Japanese dietary culture might be a factor contributing to the high life expectancy in Japan. As little is known about what constitutes traditional and modern eating in Japan, the aims of the current study were to (1) comprehensively compile and systematize the various facets of traditional and modern eating; and (2) investigate whether these facets also apply to traditional and modern eating in Japan. In Study 1, an extensive international literature review was performed.

Although studies about the origin of life are a frontier in science and a number of effective approaches have been developed, drawbacks still exist. Examples include: (1) simulation of chemical evolution experiments (which were demonstrated for the first time by Stanley Miller); (2) approaches tracing back the most primitive life-like systems (on the basis of investigations of present organisms); and (3) constructive approaches for making life-like systems (on the basis of molecular biology), such as in vitro construction of the RNA world. Naturally, simulation experiments of chemical evolution under plausible ancient Earth environments have been recognized as a potentially fruitful approach.

Here we overview the chemical evolution of RNA molecules from inorganic material through mineral-mediated RNA formation compatible with the plausible early Earth environments. Pathways from the gas-phase reaction to the formation of nucleotides, activation and oligomerization of nucleotides, seem to be compatible with specific environments. However, how these steps interacted is not clear since the chemical conditions are frequently different and can be incompatible between them; thus the products would have migrated from one place to another, suitable for further chemical evolution.
