First-line biologics as a treatment for ulcerative colitis: a multicenter randomized control study.

Background: Despite the availability of several biologics for ulcerative colitis (UC), there remains a critical need to identify first-line treatment biologics. The superiority of infliximab (IFX) over vedolizumab (VED) and ustekinumab (UST) was evaluated as initial UC treatments in patients with biologic-naïve UC.

Methods: This multicenter, randomized control trial was conducted across 20 Japanese medical institutions.

Methods: Patients were enrolled prospectively in the JSCCR project "Grading of Peritoneal Seeding in Colorectal Cancer." Factors that may influence overall survival-age, sex, location of the primary tumor, lymph node metastasis, presence of liver metastasis, degree of peritoneal metastasis, peritoneal cancer index (PCI), cancer cure, and postoperative chemotherapy-in the PTR group were examined using multivariate analysis.

Biomechanical comparison of all-inside meniscal suture configurations for posterior root tear: Three conventional stitches versus delta-grip stitch.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the biomechanical properties of four meniscal suture configurations-two simple sutures (TSS), two cinch sutures, a locking loop stitch (LLS), and a delta-grip stitch (DGS)-for transtibial pullout repair of medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs) using porcine menisci.

Methods: Forty porcine menisci were randomly assigned to each suture configuration with all-inside repair. All specimens were subjected to cyclic loading for 1000 cycles, followed by a load-to-failure test.

Background: Impairment of the visceral pleura following thoracic surgery often leads to air leaks and intrathoracic adhesions. For preventing such complications, mesothelial cell proliferation at the pleural defects can be effective. To develop new materials for pleural defects restoration, we constructed a hybrid artificial pleural tissue (H-APLT) combining polyglycolic acid (PGA) nanofiber sheets with a three-dimensional culture of mesothelial cells and fibroblasts and evaluated its therapeutic efficacy in a rat pleural defect model.

Background: We previously reported the relationship between first-pass pulmonary vein isolation (FPI) and pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) durability in ablation index-guided atrial fibrillation ablation. Obesity is a worsening factor for atrial tachyarrhythmia (AT) recurrence. However, the impact of obesity on FPI has been scarcely reported.

Outcome of basal cell carcinoma excision with 2 mm surgical margin in Japanese patients: A retrospective study of one-step surgery.

Background: Basal cell carcinoma is the most common skin malignancy. The standard treatment is surgical excision with predetermined margins. Some argue that the currently recommended surgical margins are excessive, and it is questionable whether such wide surgical margins should be applied to all lesions.

This study aimed to evaluate whether a novel three-class annotation method for preparing training data could enhance AI model performance in detecting osteosarcoma on plain radiographs compared to conventional single-class annotation. : We developed two annotation methods for the same dataset of 468 osteosarcoma X-rays and 378 normal radiographs: a conventional single-class annotation (1C model) and a novel three-class annotation method (3C model) that separately labeled intramedullary, cortical, and extramedullary tumor components.

Background: Training opportunities, work satisfaction, and the factors that influence them according to gender and subspecialties are understudied among Japanese cardiologists.

Methods: We investigated the career development of Japanese cardiologists with an e-mail questionnaire. Feelings of inequality in training opportunities, work dissatisfaction, and reasons were assessed by examining the cardiologists' gender and invasiveness of subspecialties.

Co-Expression of Tardive Dyskinesia and Drug-Induced Parkinsonism in Rats Chronically Treated With Haloperidol.

Aim: We aimed to create a rat model of drug-induced parkinsonism and tardive dyskinesia by chronic administration of haloperidol and examine the expression of direct and indirect pathway markers in the striatum of the model rats.

Methods: We treated 21 rats, 14 with haloperidol decanoate and 7 with placebo. The number of vacuous chewing movements per 2 min was counted, and haloperidol-treated rats were classified into two groups: mild and severe tardive dyskinesia.

False Lumen Stenting to the Acute Occlusive Carotid Artery Dissection Combined With Intracranial Acute Embolic Stroke: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Tandem occlusion due to acute cervical carotid artery dissection should be promptly treated with thrombectomy for reperfusion. If the cervical lesion has reached severe stenosis or complete occlusion, balloon angioplasty and, in certain cases, carotid artery stenting should be performed before thrombectomy for the intracranial lesion. Angioplasty or stent placement is performed in the true lumen, but securing the placement is challenging when the true lumen cannot be determined.

The beneficial effects of water-soluble dietary fiber on liver fat and fibrosis involve the gut microbiota; however, few epidemiological studies have investigated this association. This large-scale epidemiological study aimed to determine the effect of water-soluble dietary fiber intake on liver fat and fibrosis via gut microbiota for the general population. We divided low- and high-intake groups by median daily water-soluble dietary fiber intake and matched background factors by propensity score matching for sex and age.

We conducted this study to evaluate the efficacy of robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) on cadavers in the prone position, utilizing telesurgical support through the double-surgeon cockpit (double SC) of the novel Japanese-made surgical robot system, hinotori (Medicaroid, Kobe, Japan). The Cadaveric Anatomy and Surgical Training Laboratory (CAST Lab) at Hokkaido University and Kushiro City General Hospital (KCGH) are interconnected by a dedicated 1 Gbps internet line, spanning 300 km. An operation unit and double SC were installed at CAST Lab, whereas the double SC proctor was installed at KCGH.
