Article Synopsis
  • Study aimed to assess the impact of intraoperative lavage cytology on patient outcomes in colorectal cancer surgeries, specifically focusing on stages II-III.
  • Out of 1378 patients, lavage revealed positive cytology in only 54 cases, with significant differences in 5-year relapse-free survival and overall survival rates between positive and negative cytology in stage II patients.
  • The findings indicate that negative cytology correlates with better outcomes and highlights the effectiveness of lavage cytology in predicting peritoneal recurrence in these cancer patients.

Objectives: This study aimed to clarify the disinfectant efficacy of the 222-nm far ultraviolet-C (UV-C) during esophagogastroduodenoscopy using bacterial cultures.

Methods: The endoscopists performed esophagogastroduodenoscopy wearing a gown with a tryptic soy agar medium plate on their epigastric region and were divided into two groups: 222-nm far UV-C irradiation (UV group) and non-UV irradiation (non-UV group). As a control group, tryptic soy agar medium plates were placed about 110 cm above the floor.

A 37-year-old man with systemic lupus erythematosus underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy as a screening examination for anemia and bloody stool. A semi-pedunculated edematous lobular polyp of 25 mm in size was detected in the greater curvature of the upper gastric body. At that time, a definitive diagnosis of cancer could not be made based on a biopsy specimen from the lesion.

Background: First successful human round spermatid injection (ROSI) was conducted by Tesarik et al. in 1996 for the sole treatment of nonobstructive azoospermic men whose most advanced spermatogenic cells were elongating round spermatids. Nine offsprings from ROSI were reported between 1996 and 2000.

Objectives: Gastrointestinal endoscopy increases the risk of bacterial exposure to endoscopists. However, before 2019, most endoscopists did not pay attention to microorganism transmission from patients. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of bacterial exposure to endoscopists' faces during gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures using the bacterial culture method.

Objectives: Cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors occasionally show persistent diarrhea accompanied by endoscopic features of ulcerative colitis. The endoscopic mucosal inflammation may appear mild in some patients compared to the clinical severity, which can make choosing a treatment challenging. In this study, we evaluated the factors that support the continuation of chemotherapy by assessing the endoscopic and histopathological characteristics of patients who experienced diarrhea after immune checkpoint inhibitor administration.

Severe edema and blood blisters can occur as adverse events associated with sitagliptin. A history of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors should be considered when examining patients with edema and blood blisters of uncertain cause.

Background It is uncertain whether risk classification under the nationwide program on screening and lifestyle modification for metabolic syndrome captures well high-risk individuals who could benefit from lifestyle interventions. We examined the validity of risk classification by linking the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods and Results Individual-level data of 29 288 Japanese individuals aged 40 to 74 years without a history of CVD from 10 prospective cohort studies were used.

Alectinib treatment is effective in patients with anaplastic lymphoma kinase gene rearrangement-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC; hereafter positive NSCLC) who exhibit central nervous system (CNS) relapse and poor performance status (PS). Lorlatinib treatment is effective upon failure of other ALK inhibitor-based treatments. However, much remains unknown about the efficacy of lorlatinib in patients with positive NSCLC, who have triple problems, carcinomatous meningitis, poor PS, and dysphagia, after alectinib treatment.

Substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), the major output nucleus of the basal ganglia, receives dopamine from dendrites extending from dopaminergic neurons of the adjacent nucleus pars compacta (SNc), which is known for its selective degeneration in Parkinson's disease. As a recipient for dendritically released dopamine, the dopamine D1 receptor (D1R) is a primary candidate due to its very dense immunoreactivity in the SNr. However, the precise location of D1R remains unclear at the cellular level in the SNr except for that reported on axons/axon terminals of presumably striatal GABAergic neurons.
