Article Synopsis
  • Researchers used gamma-ray spectrometry with a NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer to differentiate between natural and man-made radionuclides impacting gamma dose rates in the environment, focusing on the effects of nuclear accidents.
  • They discovered that the accuracy of measurements was hindered by low energy resolution, which resulted in an overestimation of ambient gamma doses from natural radionuclides, particularly due to the interference from the radionuclide 134Cs.
  • The study found a strong correlation between absorbed dose rates in air and photon fluxes from the radionuclide 208Tl, suggesting it can be effectively used to estimate absorbed dose rates, with specific rates measured in Namie Town and Okuma Town post-Fukushima ranging from

Electronic address:

Master transcription factors such as TP63 establish super-enhancers (SEs) to drive core transcriptional networks in cancer cells, yet the spatiotemporal regulation of SEs within the nucleus remains unknown. The nuclear pore complex (NPC) may tether SEs to the nuclear pore where RNA export rates are maximal. Here, we report that NUP153, a component of the NPC, anchors SEs to the NPC and enhances TP63 expression by maximizing mRNA export.

ΔNp63 Regulates Radioresistance in Human Head and Neck Squamous Carcinoma Cells.

Curr Issues Mol Biol

July 2023

Department of Radiation Science, Graduate School of Health Sciences, Hirosaki University, Hirosaki 036-8564, Aomori, Japan.

Radiation therapy is commonly used to treat head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC); however, recurrence results from the development of radioresistant cancer cells. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the underlying mechanisms of radioresistance in HNSCC. Previously, we showed that the inhibition of karyopherin-β1 (KPNB1), a factor in the nuclear transport system, enhances radiation-induced cytotoxicity, specifically in HNSCC cells, and decreases the localization of SCC-specific transcription factor ΔNp63.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are indispensable for the maintenance of the entire blood program through cytokine response. However, HSCs have high radiosensitivity, which is often a problem during radiation therapy and nuclear accidents. Although our previous study has reported that the combination cytokine treatment (interleukin-3, stem cell factor, and thrombopoietin) improves the survival of human hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) after radiation, the mechanism by which cytokines contribute to the survival of HSPCs is largely unclear.
