In this study, to get a better understanding in characterizing groundwater and ensure its effective management, the radon concentrations in water samples were measured through Ryukyu limestone in southern Okinawa Island, Japan. Water samples were collected from a limestone cave (Gyokusendo cave, dropping water) and two springs (Ukinju and Komesu, spring water), and the radon concentrations were measured by liquid scintillation counters. The radon concentrations in the samples from the Gyokusendo cave, and Ukinju and Komesu springs were 10 ± 1.

Objectives: To compare overall survival between patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated by cytoreductive nephrectomy and those not treated by cytoreductive nephrectomy.
Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 278 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with first-line tyrosine kinase inhibitors between January 2008 and November 2019. Patients were divided into two groups: a cytoreductive nephrectomy group (immediate or deferred cytoreductive nephrectomy) and a group who received systemic tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies alone without cytoreductive nephrectomy (control group).

Ionizing radiation induces severe oxidative stress, resulting in individual death by acute radiation syndrome. The nuclear factor-erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) plays an important role in the antioxidant response pathway. Recently, romiplostim (RP), an idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura therapeutic drug, was reported to completely rescue mice exposed to lethal total-body irradiation (TBI).

The biological effects of low dose-rate radiation exposures on humans remains unknown. In fact, the Japanese nation still struggles with this issue after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Recently, we have found a unique area in Indonesia where naturally high radiation levels are present, resulting in chronic low dose-rate radiation exposures.

Purpose: In suspected radiation exposures, cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay is used for biodosimetry by detecting micronuclei (MN) in binucleated (BN) cells in whole blood and isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cultures. Standardized harvest protocols for whole blood were published by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2001 (Technical report no. 405) and 2011 (EPR-Biodosimetry).

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune blistering disease that targets the hemidesmosomal proteins BP180 and BP230/BPAG1e. Whereas the role of anti-BP180 antibodies has been extensively characterized, the pathogenicity of anti-BPAG1e antibodies remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the role of antibodies to BPAG1e in the experimental bullous pemphigoid models.

Benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy (BAFME) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by adult-onset tremulous hand movement, myoclonus, and infrequent epileptic seizures. Recently, intronic expansion of unstable TTTCA/TTTTA pentanucleotide repeats in SAMD12, TNRC6A, or RAPGEF2 was identified as pathological mutations in Japanese BAFME pedigrees. To confirm these mutations, we performed a genetic analysis on 12 Japanese BAFME pedigrees.

Background: Catheter ablation (CA) is an important strategy for managing atrial fibrillation (AF). However, long-term anticoagulation strategies and clinical outcomes following CA, including thromboembolism and bleeding, have not yet been elucidated.
Methods: We established a prospective registry, called the JACRE registry, for patients on rivaroxaban or warfarin administration who received CA for AF.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world based on incidence, reaching more than 2 million new cases in 2018, while continuing to increase. Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most common type of this cancer, making up approximately 70-80% of all breast cancer diagnoses. In particular, the type of breast cancer overexpressing human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) has potential of strong proliferation, migration and invasion and early treatment is necessary.

Hyaluronan synthase 2 (HAS2) is an integral membrane protein composed of multi-membrane-spanning regions and a large intracellular loop (HAS2-loop). We previously examined the effect of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and/or 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU) on the synthesis of hyaluronan (HA) in human skin fibroblasts and found that TPA and 4-MU have opposing effects on HA synthesis by phosphorylation and O-linked β-N-acetylglucosaminylation of HAS2, respectively. In this study, we constructed an expression vector for the HAS2-loop and analyzed its post-translational modification by PMA and 4-MU using mass spectrometry.

The number of patients with the extremely rare disease gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) neuroendocrine tumor (NET) has increased rapidly in recent years. In-pentetreotide SPECT in somatostatin receptor scintigraphy has been used for the assessment of GEP NET patients. To diagnose GEP NET, appropriate selection of image correction parameters is critical.

Background/aim: We investigated the beneficial effects of drinking tomato juice (TJ) rich in antioxidant carotenoids on irradiated skin following radiotherapy (RT) in breast cancer patients.
Patients/methods: Twenty-three patients agreed to drink TJ (160 g/day for six months) after the completion of RT. Early and late adverse events (AEs) of irradiated skin were evaluated according to the Common Terminology Criteria for AEs and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Global Cosmetic Rating System, respectively.

Background: It has been reported that the high-dosage administration of domestically approved pharmaceutical drugs, especially granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and romiplostim (RP), is a rapid and appropriate medical treatment for preventing severe acute radiation syndrome (ARS) of victims exposed to lethal total-body irradiation (TBI). However, it remains unclear whether or not the clinical dosage administration of these drugs can ameliorate TBI-induced ARS and related high mortality in order to find various drug treatment options and less toxic optimum protocol depending on the situation surrounding the radiological accidents.
Methods: We assessed the clinical dosage administration in combination with G-CSF and RP as intraperitoneal injection in C57BL/6 J mice exposed to more than 7-Gy lethal dose of X-ray TBI for the survival study evaluated by the log-rank test.

Objectives: I-123-ioflupane single photon emission computed tomography (FP-CIT-SPECT) has been used to assess dopamine transporter (DAT) loss in Parkinson's disease. The specific binding ratio (SBR), a quantitative parameter of DAT density in the striatum, may be affected by differences in age, sex, and SPECT system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of FP-CIT-SPECT using the Japanese normal database (NDB) in the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Purpose: The thrombopoietin receptor agonist romiplostim (RP) is a therapeutic agent for immune thrombocytopenia that can achieve complete survival in mice exposed to a lethal dose of ionizing radiation. The estimated mechanism of the radio-protective/mitigative effects of RP has been proposed; however, the detailed mechanism of action remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of the radio-protective/mitigative effects of RP, the fluctuation of protein in the blood was analyzed by proteomics.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by chronic inflammation in the colonic mucosa and submucosa with repeating relapse and remission, but the pathogenesis is unknown. Patients with long-standing UC are at high risk of neoplasm development. The aim of the present study was to identify molecules whose expression is associated with UC and UC-associated colorectal cancer (UCCA).
