Objectives: A post hoc analysis used pooled STRIVE/ReSTORE trial data to determine outcomes with rezafungin versus caspofungin by Candida species and antifungal susceptibility.

Methods: The efficacy and safety of once weekly rezafungin 400/200 mg versus once daily caspofungin 70/50 mg was demonstrated in the randomized, double-blind phase 2 STRIVE (NCT02734862) and phase 3 ReSTORE (NCT03667690) trials involving adults with candidaemia and/or invasive candidiasis. In this analysis, data were pooled for patients with a documented Candida infection within 96 hours of randomization who also received ≥1 dose of study drug.

Heart Fail Rev

November 2024

Article Synopsis
  • Heart failure (HF) is a serious health issue that has high rates of illness and death, with electrical conduction problems being a key factor in its progression.
  • Conduction system pacing (CSP) is a new treatment method that includes techniques like His bundle pacing and left bundle branch area pacing, recommended for certain patients despite mainly being supported by observational studies.
  • There are significant challenges in implementing CSP, such as difficulties with lead implantation and the need for better tools, making future large-scale randomized controlled trials necessary for improving treatment strategies for HF patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of free dermal fat graft (FDFG) reconstruction after parotidectomy by analyzing clinical complications and patient satisfaction.
  • - Researchers conducted a systematic review of 20 studies involving 922 reconstructions and found low rates of complications like hematoma and infection, with most donor site issues being under 1%.
  • - Results show that FDFG is a safe and effective method for correcting facial contour deformities, with high patient satisfaction and low incidence of complications such as Frey's syndrome.

Background: Cardio-renal syndrome, characterized by simultaneous cardiac and renal impairment, presents significant challenges in patient prognostication and management. This study aimed to investigate the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CRP/Albumin ratio) as a prognostic marker in patients with cardiorenal syndrome.

Methods: This observational cohort study included consecutive patients hospitalized for cardiorenal syndrome.

Article Synopsis
  • This method allows for targeted treatment of heart cells while minimizing harm to nearby nerves and blood vessels.
  • The initial findings from a study reveal that PFA can be effectively used beyond traditional heart areas, including near pacemaker leads, which is important for treating patients with specific cardiac devices.

As the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) continues to increase globally, researchers are keen to investigate various interventions to mitigate its impact. Among these, vitamin D supplementation has attracted significant attention due to its influence on insulin secretion from the pancreas and insulin receptors in body cells. A substantial body of evidence indicates that vitamin D supplementation can reduce low-grade inflammation, a critical factor in developing insulin resistance.

Detailed characterization of B cells in dialysis patients who are candidates for kidney transplant is still lacking, with little information on how dialysis duration and modality impact B cell subsets. Cluster analysis of flow cytometry determined the frequencies and absolute numbers of B-cell subsets and divided the cohort of 78 candidates into two distinct clusters, one with shorter and one with longer dialysis duration. The immune profiles of the clusters differed depending on whether frequencies or absolute counts were considered.

Aortic valve repair is currently the only effective treatment for calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS), as no pharmacological therapies exist to prevent or slow its progression. Recent promising results showed that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) attenuates the calcification of aortic valve interstitial cells. Therefore, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the effect of GLP-1 receptor agonism (GLP-1Ra) on the risk of CAVS.

Lymphangioma, a benign mass of lymphatic origin, primarily affects the head, neck, and oral cavity, with the abdomen being an uncommon location. Clinical presentation is defined by site of origin and size. We present the case of a 10-month-old male infant with no previous medical history, admitted to our department with diffuse abdominal pain and distension.

Objective: Treating iron deficiency (ID) with ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) enhances morbidity, quality of life (QoL), and exercise capacity.

Methods: In the presented single-center, prospective follow-up study, symptomatic patients with HFrEF with ID and CIEDs scheduled for IV FCM were followed up for 12-months. Arrhythmic activity was evaluated from CIEDs and non-invasive markers from Holter recordings before and after FCM.

Aims/hypothesis: The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is increasing in young people worldwide. This study evaluated the frequency and clinical characteristics of young people presenting with type 2 diabetes from the multinational SWEET e.V Registry 2012-2021, including the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) have higher ischemic and bleeding risk compared with patients with normal renal function. The aim of our systematic review and meta-analysis is to compare shortened (≤3 months) dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with longer DAPT in patients with CKD undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions. We systematically screened three major databases (Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Scopus) searching for randomized-controlled trials or subanalyses of them, which compared shortened (S-DAPT) to longer (L-DAPT) regimens of DAPT in patients with CKD.

Intravenous amikacin, recommended for severe or recurrent (MAC) infections and as initial treatment for lung disease, is often limited by serious adverse effects such as renal and auditory toxicities. Inhaled Amikacin Liposome Inhalation Suspension (ALIS) enhances pulmonary drug deposition while minimizing systemic adverse effects, and it has recently been introduced as an add-on therapy for refractory MAC infections or when other standard treatments are inadequate. This study aims to retrospectively describe the outcomes of Greek patients with difficult-to-treat non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease following the addition of ALIS to guideline-based therapy.

Heart failure (HF) is a growing concern due to the aging population and increasing prevalence of comorbidities. Despite advances in treatment, HF remains a significant burden, necessitating novel therapeutic approaches. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) have emerged as a promising treatment option, demonstrating benefits across the entire spectrum of HF, regardless of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
