The purpose of this prospective multicenter study was to analyze the epidemiology, patterns, and management of maxillofacial fractures due to road traffic accidents (RTAs) worldwide.Between Monday September 30, 2019 and Sunday October 4, 2020,1066 patients with RTAs related fractures were admitted to 14 maxillofacial surgery departments. The following data were analyzed: age, gender, mechanism of injury, alcohol or drug abuse at the time of trauma, maxillofacial fracture site, facial injury severity scale (FISS) score, associated injuries, day and month of trauma, time of treatment, type of treatment and length of hospital stay.

This study aimed to evaluate, on a patient-data basis, the contemporary practice patterns of management of biliary acute pancreatitis and to compare these practices with the recommendations by the most updated guidelines.
Methods: All consecutive patients admitted to any of the 150 participating general surgery (GS), hepatopancreatobiliary surgery (HPB), internal medicine (IM) and gastroenterology (GA) departments with a diagnosis of biliary acute pancreatitis between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2020 were included in the study.

Background: Routine coronary artery disease (CAD) secondary prevention strategies target standard modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (SMuRFs), which include: diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and smoking. However, a significant proportion of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) present without any SMuRFs. The angiographic severity of disease in this population has not yet been investigated.

This non-interventional, multicenter, prospective study aimed to evaluate the real-world activity of trabectedin, and its impact on symptom burden and quality of life in patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma (aSTS) treated in routine clinical settings in Greece. Patients with histologically confirmed aSTS newly initiated on trabectedin were enrolled. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) rate at 6 months.

Endometriosis is a disease that affects a significant proportion of women and its infiltrative pattern is entirely dependent on the vascular supply of lesions. Several factors seem to trigger the process of angiogenesis in endometriotic lesions. During the last years, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), a group of nuclear proteins that regulate gene transcription and that seem to regulate energy consumption and expenditure, have been also implicated in the pathophysiology of angiogenesis.

We report differences in the refractive index of healthy and tumorous freshly excised human breast tissue as determined from reflectance profile measurements at five wavelengths (432 nm, 532 nm, 633 nm, 964 nm, 1551 nm) in the visible and near-infrared using a standard prism-coupling refractometer. These refractive index differences, particularly in the near-infrared, can be used to distinguish fibroadenomas and cancerous growths not only from normal breast tissue but also from each other.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common type of pancreatic cancer and fourth most common cause of death in developed countries. Despite improved survival rates after resection combined with adjuvant chemotherapy or neoadjuvant chemotherapy, recurrence still occurs in a high percentage of patients within the first 2 years after resection. Immunotherapy aims to improve antitumor immune responses and reduce toxicity providing a more specific, targeted therapy compared to chemotherapy and has been proved an efficient therapeutic tool for many solid tumors.

Background: Managing postoperative pain even after laparoscopic groin hernia repair still remains an interesting challenge for clinicians especially for patients of high risk. Plenty of operative techniques and analgesic methods have been proposed in order to minimize postoperative pain after laparoscopic groin hernia repair. The aim of the present study is to compare transverse abdominis plane (TAP)-block with local analgesic infiltration at trocar entry sites in the terms of reducing postoperative pain.

Alcohol consumption is a known, modifiable risk factor for incident atrial fibrillation (AF). However, it remains unclear whether the protective effect of moderate alcohol consumption-that has been reported for various cardiovascular diseases also applies to the risk for new-onset AF. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the role of different drinking patterns (low: <14 grams/week; moderate: <168 grams/week; and heavy: >168 grams/week) on the risk for incident AF.

Background: The purpose of this study is to assess patients' compliance to recommendations after evaluation of pancreatic cystic neoplasm (PCN) with EUS and investigate how the presence of "worrisome" characteristics including cyst's size, main pancreatic duct dilation and presence of mural nodules might affect the adherence rates of management recommendations.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients at a private tertiary hospital who were referred for evaluation with EUS over a 5-year period (2015-2019), after the diagnosis of pancreatic cystic neoplasm during radiological imaging.
Results: We included 111 patients (mean age 64.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) respond to altered physiological conditions to alleviate the threat. Production of the 70 kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) is up-regulated to protect proteins from degradation. Sequestosome-1 (p62) binds to altered proteins and the p62-protein complex is degraded by autophagy.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of ypN+ status according to ypT category in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated with chemoradiotherapy and total mesorectal excision, and to assess the impact of ypN+ on disease recurrence and survival by pooled analysis of individual-patient data.
Methods: Individual-patient data from 10 studies of chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer were included. Pooled rates of ypN+ disease were calculated with 95 per cent confidence interval for each ypT category.

Objective: During the last decades, surgeons of several specialties presenting different levels of expertise in colon handling have been involved in laparoscopic procedures. The aim of the present experimental study was to investigate the feasibility of TISSEELTM versus the conventional suture placement technique on confined bowel lesions in rats.
Methods: Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats underwent confined bowel perforation and were divided into three groups: the SUTURE group (sutures were used), the SUTURE + TISSEELTM group (sutures and TISSEELTM were utilized), and the TISSEELTM group (only TISSEELTM was used).

Background: Tailgut cysts (TGCs) are benign congenital abnormalities that usually present with non-specific symptoms, constituting a diagnostic dilemma for physicians. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature concerning clinical manifestations, diagnostic modalities and histologic findings of TGCs and highlight current knowledge on therapeutic management of this rare entity.
Methods: PubMed and Embase databases were systematically searched by two independent investigators (last search 18 February 2021) for studies concerning TGCs published in the past two decades.
