Metallic coil embolization is a common method for the endovascular treatment of visceral artery aneurysms (VAA) and visceral artery pseudoaneurysms (VAPA); however, this treatment is suboptimal due to the high cost of coils, incomplete volume occlusion, poor reendothelialization, aneurysm puncture, and coil migration. Several alternative treatment strategies are available, including stent flow diverters, glue embolics, gelfoam slurries, and vascular mesh plugs-each of which have their own disadvantages. Here, we investigated the in vitro capability of a shear-thinning biomaterial (STB), a nanocomposite hydrogel composed of gelatin and silicate nanoplatelets, for the minimally-invasive occlusion of simple necked aneurysm models.

Herein, an economical, analytical and sensitive method was established for the fluorometric determination of urea using freshly prepared silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) in real urine samples. The standard addition and second-order derivative methods were selected for the ongoing research work to eliminate the possible effect of interferences in a real environment. In this work, Ag-NPs were prepared by reducing silver nitrate salt in the presence of 1,3-di-(1H-imidazole-1-yl) -2-propanol (DIPO) in an aqueous medium.

In the present work, leaf extract of Boswellia sacra was used as reductant for synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The variables such as volume of Boswellia sacra leaf extract (1%), volume of silver nitrate (1 mM), and temperature were optimized by response surface methodology via Box-Behnken design for the synthesis of AgNPs. Design-Expert software generated the optimum conditions for the highest yield of silver nanoparticles as 8 mL of 1 mM AgNO, 8 mL of 1% Boswellia sacra leaf extract, and temperature = 55 °C.

Enhanced primary treatment during wet weather flow using ferrate as a coagulant, coagulant aid and disinfectant.

J Environ Manage

July 2021

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 1H9, Canada. Electronic address:

This study evaluated the dual-function of ferrate as a coagulant and disinfectant for chemically-enhanced primary treatment during wet weather flow (WWF). For the first time, ferrate was thoroughly examined as a coagulant aid with aluminum sulfate (alum) to minimize the organic and inorganic contents along with microbial level during WWF. Ferrate as a coagulant was evaluated based on a two-level factorial design.

Patients in Singapore with chronic conditions such as diabetes are encouraged to participate in patient-professional partnership activities because of rising health care costs and a shortage of infrastructure and human resources. This study explores the self-care and health information seeking behaviors of diabetic patients in Singapore, as well as factors related to health and information carriers that might influence those behaviors. A pilot-tested online survey was developed based on the Comprehensive Model of Information Seeking (CMIS) and notified to the members of the Diabetic Society of Singapore (DSS) through their newsletter in January 2016.

Fenugreek is a leguminous plant belongs to the family Fabaceae, which is extensively cultivated as a semiarid crop in Northern Africa, the Mediterranean, India, and Canada. In the present review paper, first we summarized the extraction, purification, chemical composition, molecular structure, and rheological behavior of the mucilages isolated from Fenugreek seeds (FSG), and then their functional properties presented to elucidate the potential application of this traditional source of hydrocolloids in food, pharmaceutical, and other industries. To date, there is no technique that can successfully remove the attached protein from FSG.

Maximizing Electrokinetic Energy Conversion via the Intersecting Asymptotes Method.

Sci Rep

January 2019

Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, T2G 2G8, Canada.

It has been shown in earlier studies that the maximum electrokinetic conversion efficiency between flow and electric work (e.g., electrokinetic power generation) occurs when electric double-layer (λ) overlaps and there is no electroneutral zone in a nanometer-scale channel.

Potential negative impact of informing patients about medication side effects: a systematic review.

Int J Clin Pharm

August 2018

Health Sciences Division, Higher College of Technology, P.O. Box 16062, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Background Pharmacovigilance, as it is carried out primarily by healthcare professionals is more focused on being very objective in nature. Acknowledging the importance of the subjective experience of patients in pharmacovigilance was underpinned by its unique ability to bring about a more holistic understanding through the deep information unraveled by the patients. Medication safety-related information has to be shared with patients to allow them to be actively involved in their therapy and pharmacovigilance.
