Oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage are causes of platelet storage lesions (PSLs). Mitochondrial damage causes mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to be released into the extracellular space. MtDNA in platelet concentrates is considered damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and is one of the major causes of PSLs.

A declining need for red blood cells coupled with strengthening demand for plasma-derived medicines has led to a strong focus on moving whole blood donors to plasmapheresis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the four-year policies of the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) in terms of plasmapheresis recruitment of first-time donors and its effect on plasmapheresis outcome. Plasmapheresis data related to 16 centers from 2016 to 2019 was obtained from IBTO software.

Background And Purpose: Bombay and Para-Bombay phenotypes are characterized by FUT1 gene mutation and lack of H antigen expression in red blood cells. ABH antigens are not present in the body secretions of Bombay individuals, while they are expressed in the secretions of para-Bombay. The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular basis of FUT1 and FUT2 genes in Iranians with the Bombay or Para-Bombay phenotype.

Purpose: The development of biomaterials provides potent promise for the regeneration of neuroretinal cells in degenerative eye diseases and retinal tissue engineering. Biomimetic three-dimensional (3D) microenvironments and specific growth factors motivate the differentiation of human retinal pigment epithelial (hRPE) cells toward a retinal neural lineage. In this study, we evaluated alginate/gelatin (A/G) as a substrate for the culture of hRPE cells.

Providing fresh blood to keep people in need of blood alive, has always been a main issues of health systems. Right policy-making in this area requires accurate forecasting of blood demand. The current study aimed at predicting demand for different blood groups in Shiraz using Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and a hybrid approaches.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected blood inventory and donation worldwide. The Islamic Republic of Iran was among the first countries to report the COVID-19 pandemic and it faced a significant blood shortage during the first weeks of the pandemic.
Aims: We aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the number, type, and safety of blood donations, comparing the periods before and during the pandemic.

Today, Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS) is known as a plasma cell malignancy susceptible to evolving into the life-threatening stage, multiple myeloma (MM), without prominent clinical manifestations. Despite the discovery of advanced therapies and multiple pathogenic markers, the complexity of MM development has made it an incurable malignancy. In this study, the microarray dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and analyzed using the LIMMA package of R-software to determine differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in MGUS and MM compared to the control samples.

Introduction: The isolation of microparticles (MPs) from leukoreduction filters (LRFs) during cell extraction process introduced LRFs as a precious source of MPs for animal and human study.
Method: LRFs were collected from Tehran Blood Transfusion Center. The back-flushing method was used for leukocyte extraction from the LRFs.

Introduction: Mt DNA (DAMPs) plays a key modulatory role in immune cells and may also mediate a variety of adverse transfusion reactions.
Material And Method: The cross-sectional study was performed on 22 (PRP) and 14 (SDP) between February 2019 and 2020. mtDNA DAMPs by quantitative real-time PCR was assessed on days 1, 3, and 5 of platelets storage.

Platelet storage lesions may occur in Platelet concentrates (PCs) storage time, reducing PCs' quality. Mitochondrial damage causes mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to be released into the extracellular space. In this study, we evaluated the effect of L-carnitine (LC) as an antioxidant on free mtDNA DAMPs release in PCs during storage.

Rare bleeding disorders (RBDs), including factor (F) I, FII, FV, FVII, combined FV and FVIII (CF5F8), FXI, FXIII and vitamin-K dependent coagulation factors (VKCF) deficiencies, are a heterogeneous group of hemorrhagic disorder with a variable bleeding tendency. RBDs are due to mutation in underlying coagulation factors genes, except for CF5F8 and VKCF deficiencies. FVII deficiency is the most common RBD with >330 variants in the F7 gene, while only 63 variants have been identified in the F2 gene.

Background: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been recognized as the main modulatory molecules in various cancers and perform as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs). The nuclear hormone receptor superfamily of ligand-activated transcription factors (NR3C1) regulates numerous proliferative and metabolic processes such as tumorigenesis and metabolic diseases. Furthermore, X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) belongs to a family of the inhibitors of apoptosis proteins, is located downstream of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR or NR3C1) pathway, and cooperates with GR to suppress apoptosis.

Activated platelets are involved in the atherogenic stage of atherosclerosis, while they can also progress it to atherothrombosis which may cause an ischemic state and organ failure. In general, coronary artery disease (CAD) is considered as common and severe clinical consequence of atherosclerosis, manifesting as a chronic inflammatory condition with the release of platelet mediators, among which the importance of platelet-borne TGF-β1 is not yet well understood. Hence, for the first time, this study aimed to examine platelet level of TGF-β1 (latent/mature) in CAD-patients and its association with the expression of platelet pro-inflammatory molecules.

Objectives: HLA alloimmunization is one of the most troublesome consequence of regular transfusion which is itself a mainstay measure to provide longevity to the thalassemia patients. Febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reaction (FNHTR) is one of the most common complication which might be related to the HLA alloimmunization. Here, we studied the HLA antigenic system and alloimmunization rate in the Iranian β-thalassemia patients who suffered from FNHTR compare to the β-thalassemia patients without FNHTR.

Background & Objective: Trapped cell population in leukoreduction filters (LRFs) contains such a significant number of CD34 hematopoietic stem cells that can be recovered to be used in research studies.
Methods: Samples (n=20) were obtained from 10 first-time donors and 10 regular blood donors with more than 30 times blood donation. After separating leukocytes from LRFs by backflushing, total leukocyte number and differential count were determined in both groups using an automated haemocytometer.

Background: Some viruses such as SARS, SARS-CoV-2, and MERS cause an imbalance in immune responses and leads to an acute inflammatory reaction named cytokine storm. In this situation, an anti-inflammatory component can modulate the immune system and decrease mortality. The aim of this study was investigate the potential of leukoreduction filters (LRFs) in creating an anti-inflammatory compound.

Gene therapy for the treatment of ocular neovascularization has reached clinical trial phases. The AAV2-sFLT01 construct was already evaluated in a phase 1 open-label trial administered intravitreally to patients with advanced neovascular age-related macular degeneration. SFLT01 protein functions by binding to VEGF and PlGF molecules and inhibiting their activities simultaneously.
