Reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is an essential tool for gene expression analysis; choosing appropriate reference genes for normalization is crucial to ensure data reliability. However, most studies on osteogenic differentiation have had limited success in identifying optimal reference genes. To the best of our knowledge, no optimal reference genes in three-dimensional (3D) osteogenic differentiation culture experiments using human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) have been identified.

Aims: Whether rotation of a diverting loop ileostomy during rectal cancer surgery, for reducing the catastrophic effect of an anastomotic leakage, affects the incidence of small-bowel obstruction has not been fully investigated. The purpose of this study is to explore whether technical maneuvers in diverting loop ileostomy creation, including its rotation, are associated with increased incidence of small-bowel obstruction in rectal tumor surgery.

Methods: This multicenter prospective study was conducted by the Clinical Study Group of Osaka University, which comprises 24 major institutions.

Deficit of oxygen and nutrients in the tumor microenvironment (TME) triggers abnormal angiogenesis that produces dysfunctional and leaky blood vessels, which fail to adequately perfuse tumor tissues. Resulting hypoxia, exacerbation of metabolic disturbances, and generation of an immunosuppressive TME undermine the efficacy of anticancer therapies. Use of carefully scheduled angiogenesis inhibitors has been suggested to overcome these problems and normalize the TME.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal-dominant vascular disorder characterized by intractable epistaxis, mucocutaneous telangiectasias, and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in multiple organs, including the lungs, liver, gastrointestinal tract, brain, and spinal cord. We herein report a 50-year-old Japanese man with HHT who experienced recurrent epistaxis, telangiectasia in the cornea, apex of the tongue and fingers; hepatic AVM; and a poorly developed main arterial trunk in the right middle cerebral artery. A genetic analysis revealed a novel heterozygous mutation in the activin A receptor-like type 1 gene, with a frameshift mutation in NM_000020.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the shape, autofluorescence, and sensitivity of photocoagulated lesions relate in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy over a year after treatment.
  • It categorizes photocoagulated lesions by their autofluorescence levels and compares retinal sensitivity and inner retinal layer damage across these groups.
  • Findings indicate that most lesions with diffuse autofluorescence maintain their photoreceptor structure and function, and autofluorescence can help assess damage noninvasively, guiding treatment decisions.

Article Synopsis
  • Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a major cause of blindness in children, and anti-VEGF drugs are used to control abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina.
  • A case study reports that after treatment with the drug ranibizumab, a 25-week-old infant developed abnormal blood vessel growth across the macula, which typically should not occur.
  • This suggests that while anti-VEGF treatments aim to stop abnormal vessel growth, they may also cause unintended vascular problems, necessitating careful monitoring of infants treated for severe ROP.
