Exposure of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to the cytosol activates innate immune responses. But the mechanisms by which mtDNA crosses the inner mitochondrial membrane are unknown. Here, we found that the inner mitochondrial membrane protein prohibitin 1 (PHB1) plays a critical role in mtDNA release by regulating permeability across the mitochondrial inner membrane.

Background: Demyelination is similar with malignancy in clinical symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important auxiliary examination in the diagnosis of demyelinating diseases and malignancy. Since MRI and symptoms can be difficult to distinguish demyelination from malignancy, other auxiliary examinations, such as demyelinating disease-specific antibodies, play an important role in distinguishing them.

Background: Spinal cord infarction is a rare disorder, constituting only 1% to 2% of all neurological vascular emergencies (making it less frequent than ischaemic brain injury); however, it is severe. A case of long-segment spinal cord infarction complicated with multiple cerebral infarctions has not been reported to date.

Case Presentation: Here, we describe one such case: a patient with spinal cord infarction from the cervical 7 (C7) to thoracic 6 (T6) vertebrae, along with anterior spinal artery syndrome and complicated by multiple cerebral infarctions.

Front Oncol

August 2022

Department of Oncology, Heyuan Hospital of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, Heyuan People's Hospital, Heyuan, China.

Background: Primary Ewing's sarcoma of sphenoid sinus, observed in children and adolescents, is an extremely rare malignancy. Such rarity makes the imaging features and treatment strategies for Ewing's sarcoma of sphenoid sinus unclear. This study aimed to offer guidance for treating this very disease by describing a patient with a rare primary Ewing's sarcoma of sphenoid sinus and reviewing the available data in the literature.

Objective: To investigate the association between baseline hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels and bleeding in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Methods: This observational cohort study enrolled 6283 consecutive NSTE-ACS patients undergoing PCI from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014. Based on baseline HbA1c levels, the patients were divided into the group with HbA1c < 7% ( = 4740) and the group with HbA1c ≥ 7% ( = 1543).

Article Synopsis
  • - Lenvatinib is used as a first-line treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but drug resistance limits its effectiveness, with the mechanisms behind this resistance not fully understood.
  • - Researchers used CRISPR/Cas9 screening and other assays to identify six key genes related to Lenvatinib resistance, particularly focusing on DUSP4, which is linked to increased cancer cell survival and proliferation during treatment.
  • - DUSP4 deficiency enhances drug resistance through activation of the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway, and combining Lenvatinib with MEK inhibitors shows potential to improve treatment outcomes for patients with HCC.

Department of Clinical Laboratory, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Medicine, 71067Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou, China.

Background: Effective means for early diagnosis are imperative to reduce death rate of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. We aimed to find out high-performance serologic markers to distinguish early-stage NSCLC patients from benign pulmonary nodule patients and healthy controls (HC). Cystatin-SN (CST1) is an active cysteine protease inhibitor of the CST superfamily, involving in the processes of inflammation and tumorigenesis.

Targeting TRIM54/Axin1/β-Catenin Axis Prohibits Proliferation and Metastasis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Front Oncol

December 2021

Guangdong Province Key Laboratory for Biotechnology Drug Candidates, School of Life Sciences and Biopharmaceutics, Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Guangzhou, China.

Accumulating evidence demonstrates that dysregulation of ubiquitin-mediated degradation of oncogene or suppressors plays an important role in several diseases. However, the function and molecular mechanisms of ubiquitin ligases underlying hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain elusive. In the current study, we show that overexpression of TRIM54 was associated with HCC progression.

MiR-3188 regulates the proliferation and apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma cells by targeting .

Biomark Med

December 2021

Cancer Screening Center, Department of General Surgery, Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital, Guangzhou, Guangdong, 510317, China.

The study aimed to probe into the functions and mechanisms of miR-3188 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).  Quantitative real-time PCR and western blot were implemented to detect the expressions of miR-3188 and in HCC tissues and cell lines. CCK-8, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine and flow cytometry assays were performed to assess cell viability, proliferation and apoptosis.

Biomechanical Analysis of Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement Using Cervical Subtotal Discectomy Prosthesis.

Front Bioeng Biotechnol

July 2021

Department of Orthopedics, First Affiliated Hospital, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) sacrifices segmental mobility, which can lead to the acceleration of adjacent segment degeneration. The challenge has promoted cervical artificial disc replacement (CADR) as a substitute for ACDF. However, CADR has revealed a series of new issues that are not found in ACDF, such as hypermobility, subsidence, and wear phenomenon.

Our aims were to evaluate the depression model of early maternal separation (MS) combined with adolescent chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) in female adult SD rats to observe the behavior and the expressions of synaptic proteins in rats and to provide a reference for the screening of antidepressant drug activity. In our study, MS and CUMS were conducted to establish a dual stress model on female rats. Behavioral tests, including the sucrose preference test, open field test, and zero maze test, were used to detect depression-like and anxiety-like behavior of animals.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), one of the most common primary malignancies, is theoretically an epitope candidate for immune checkpoint inhibitors, and therefore, the identification of HCC biomarkers is important. Structure-specific recognition protein 1 (SSRP1) is involved in almost all chromatin-related processes, including DNA replication, repair, and transcription. However, its role in HCC remains to be elucidated.

T-bet transduction enhances anti-tumor efficacy of IFN-producing dendritic cell (IKDC) against hepatocellular carcinoma via apoptosis induction.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

January 2021

Department of General Surgery, Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital, Guangzhou 510317, China; Department of General Surgery, Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510317, China. Electronic address:

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a public health challenge that requires dedication to develop new treatment options due to its high recurrence rate and poor prognosis. Interferon-producing killer dendritic cell (IKDC) is a subset of INF-γ secreting immune cells that modulates acquired immunity and possesses cytolytic ability. We modified IKDC isolated from the murine spleen with T-bet lentiviral transduction to enhance its cytotoxicity against HCC, and acquired IKDC overexpressing T-bet (T-bet-IKDC) for the first time.
