Objective: Although anterior compression factors and cervical alignment affect neural decompression, cervical laminoplasty may be used to achieve indirect posterior decompression. The focal apex (FA) angle of the anterior compression factor of the spine represents the degree of anterior prominence toward the spinal cord. The authors investigated the mechanism underlying the influence of FA angle and cervical alignment on spinal cord alignment (SCA) after laminoplasty, including how high-intensity signal cord change (HISCC) on preoperative T2-weighted MRI (T2-MRI) may affect neurological improvement.

Introduction: Acute spinal cord injury without tomographic evidence of vertebral fracture or dislocation in patients post trauma can represent a diagnostic challenge for the treating physician. The ossification of thoracic ligamentum flavum has been widely published as a cause of thoracic myelopathy, however its association with acute traumatic spinal cord injury is limited to isolated cases.
Case Presentation: we report a Caucasian 37-year-old man who suffered a high-energy thoracolumbar spine trauma in a motorcycle accident with acute paraplegia.

Introduction: Myositis ossificans (MO) is a benign non-neoplastic condition in which heterotopic bone formation occurs in soft tissues. Neurogenic MO is one variant of MO where the lesion is a result of neurological disorders, including brain and spinal cord injuries, especially when followed by immobility and spasticity. MO can also be a result of direct trauma or even genetic mutations.

Background: Recently, the prevalence of elderly patients suffering from cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) without bone injury has been increasing in various countries. Pre-existing factors causing spinal cord compression, such as ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), can increase the risk of CSCI without bone injury. However, no study has compared the prevalence of pre-existing factors between CSCI with and without bone injury.

Study Design: A prospective multicenter observational study.
Objective: To elucidate the efficacy of transcranial motor-evoked potentials (Tc(E)-MEPs) in degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) surgery by comparing cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) to cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and investigate the timing of Tc(E)-MEPs alerts and types of interventions affecting surgical outcomes.
Summary Of Background Data: Although CSM and OPLL are the most commonly encountered diseases of DCM, the benefits of Tc(E)-MEPs for DCM remain unclear and comparisons of these two diseases have not yet been conducted.
Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) causes serious problems, such as myelopathy and acute spinal cord injury. The early and accurate diagnosis of OPLL would hence prevent the miserable prognoses. Plain lateral radiography is an essential method for the evaluation of OPLL.

Cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a contributing factor to spinal cord injury or trauma-induced myelopathy in the elderly. To reduce the incidence of these traumas, it is essential to diagnose OPLL at an early stage and to educate patients how to prevent falls. We thus evaluated the ability of our convolutional neural network (CNN) to differentially diagnose cervical spondylosis and cervical OPLL.

Purpose: Cervical ossification of ligamentum flavum (COLF) is a rare clinical entity which can occasionally contribute to severe myeloradiculopathy. Many orthopedists are unfamiliar with or underestimate this pathology. Therefore, a comprehensive research is obligatory to reappraise the epidemiological, radiological, clinical and histopathological characteristics of COLF-myeloradiculopathy based on synthesis of individual patient data.

The term neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO) is used to describe the pathological bone formation in soft tissues, due to spinal cord or brain injury. Commonly is presented with pain and stiffness of the affected joint. NHO affects the quality of life of these patients, delays their rehabilitation and therefore increases morbidity.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) can occur as a complication of various pathologies affecting the hip including trauma, tendon avulsions, chronic injury, spinal cord injury, and soft-tissue disruption caused by surgery. When HO is present alongside intra-articular hip pathology such as femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) or labral pathology, consideration should be made to combine the surgical excision of the HO with the FAIS decompression or labral repair if the location and size of the HO is appropriate for arthroscopic excision. Often times, the HO is located in such a position that any central compartment work can be completed before turning to the HO excision.

Diagnosis of the cause of massive edema of the lower limbs in patients after spinal cord injury (SCI) can be difficult because of loss of pain sensation, commonly occurring in this group of patients. This paper reviews several different pathologies that can lead to lower-limb edema and the associated diagnostic difficulties. We present four cases of patients with massive edemas of lower limbs at different times after SCI undergoing treatment in the Department of Rehabilitation, University Hospital in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Neuroimmune dysfunction is thought to promote the development of several acute and chronic complications in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. Putative roles for adrenal stress hormones and catecholamines are increasingly being recognized, yet how these adversely affect peripheral tissue homeostasis and repair under SCI conditions remains elusive. Here, we investigated their influence in a mouse model of SCI with acquired neurogenic heterotopic ossification.

Background: Conventional open laminectomy is considered to be the standard procedure for the treatment of thoracic ossified ligamentum flavum, but multi-segment thoracic laminectomy extensively removes the facet joints and ligamentous tissue, destroying the thoracic spine biomechanics and stability, may lead to delayed thoracic spine kyphosis deformities, which in turn can lead to potential neurological deterioration and local intractable pain.
Objective: To introduce the technical notes and clinical outcome of ultrasonic osteotome assisted full-endoscopic en block resection of thoracic ossified ligamentum flavum.
Study Design: A prospective cohort study.

Background: In the craniocervical junction, the ligaments between the anterior foramen magnum and the anterior arch of the atlas are not well defined, and ossification of the ligaments in this region has rarely been reported. Characterizing the anatomy and ossification of these ligaments may help in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders in this region.
Questions/purposes: (1) What is the prevalence of an unrecognized ossification at the craniocervical junction in patients with cervical spine disorders, and what are the patient characteristics associated with this ossification? (2) Do patients with this ossification have a greater risk of ossification of other structures at the craniocervical junction or cervical spine? (3) Is there an unreported ligament at this ossified site?
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 578 hospitalized patients who underwent CT for cervical spine disorders between January 2016 and July 2020.

Rationale: Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is widely used in spinal surgeries to prevent iatrogenic spinal cord injury (SCI). Most surgeons focus on avoiding neurological compromise intraoperatively, while ignoring the possibility of nerve damage preoperatively, such as neck positioning. Thus, this study aims to report a case with transient neurological deterioration due to improper neck position detected by IONM during cervical surgery.

The positive effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on bone fracture healing has been proved. However, during the period of LIPUS therapy, it is undetermined whether LIPUS promotes the formation of heterotopic ossification (HO), which usually occurs in muscle tissues after trauma such as bone fracture and spinal cord injury. Here, we used 6-week LIPUS therapy in a 42-year-old Chinese male patient with a fracture nonunion in combination with ultrasonography for monitoring fracture healing and HO formation.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the presence of bone in soft tissue where bone normally does not exist. This can be acquired or inherited with the acquired form most often seen with either trauma, spinal cord injury, or central nervous system injury. HO most commonly affects the flexors and abductors of the hip, medial knees, and the shoulders and rarely affects the genitourinary (GU) system.
