Robotic retromuscular hernia repair optimizes short-term outcomes in higher risk patients.

Surg Endosc

March 2025

Department of Surgery, Comprehensive Hernia Program, Indiana University School of Medicine, 545 Barnhill Dr., EH 121, Indianapolis, IN, 46202, USA.

Background: Smoking, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and COPD are known risk factors for surgical site occurrences (SSO) following open ventral hernia repair. However, little evidence exists on whether these factors also significantly impact SSO after robotic hernia repair. This is a particularly important distinction because robotic approaches have been associated with fewer wound complications.

Paraduodenal hernias account for ~53% of internal hernias due to embryological anomalies in intestinal rotation. While left paraduodenal hernias are the most common type, the anterior left variant is exceptionally rare. It involves herniation of the small intestine in front of the duodenum through a mesenteric defect.

Incarcerated lateral inguinal hernia following ilioinguinal lymph node dissection: an unusual case.

J Surg Case Rep

March 2025

Department of Melanoma and Surgical Oncology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Level 3, Gloucester House, Gloucester Drive, Camperdown, NSW 2050, Australia.

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) spreads predictably from primary tumour to inguinal lymph nodes then pelvic nodes and finally, to distant sites. Inguinal dissection involves resection of all femoral and inguinal nodes and is part of the recommended management. Femoral hernias are a commonly reported consequence of these extensive dissections.

Internal abdominal hernias are uncommon causes of intestinal obstruction and are difficult to detect preoperatively due to their imprecise clinical manifestations and complicated anatomic appearance. Paraduodenal hernias represent the most common subset of all internal hernias (IHs). The symptoms are nonspecific and range from persistent abdominal discomfort to acute abdomen.

Distant metastasis in the right inguinal area from gastric cancer: A case report.

World J Gastrointest Surg

February 2025

Gastric Cancer Center, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, Sichuan Province, China.

Background: Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. Most cases of newly diagnosed gastric cancer involve not only locally advanced tumor growth and regional lymph node metastases but also distant metastases. We report a rare case finding of a mass in the right inguinal area which is derived from gastric cancer.

This article examines the emergency surgical management of giant bilateral inguinoscrotal hernias through a representative case report. In this case, surgical intervention was required due to an associated cecal volvulus. While acute complications such as bowel strangulation are rare in hernias of this size, delayed presentation and the lack of timely surgical consultation permit significant inguinoscrotal hernia growth.

Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) is an acquired condition defined by a widening of the linea alba exceeding 2 cm and the subsequent separation between the two medial margins of the rectus muscles, accompanied by a laxity of the ventral abdominal muscles, and often by ventral midline hernias. It is a quite common problem in women after pregnancy. In addition to the aesthetic implications resulting from the swelling of the anterior abdominal wall in the case of increased pressure within the abdominal cavity, DRA leads to several physical functional disorders, including muscle weakness, prolapses of the pelvic organs, urinary and fecal incontinence, low back and pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction.

Background: Scoliosis is the most frequent complication of musculoskeletal abnormalities in patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, but the factors that related to its development and severity remain largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the clinical factors associated with the development and severity of scoliosis in patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Methods: Thirty-two patients admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit for congenital diaphragmatic hernia at the University of the Ryukyus Hospital between 2004 and 2019 were retrospectively analyzed, particularly those who were discharged alive and had available chest radiographs at 4-5 years of age from medical records.

Introduction And Importance: Obturator hernia is a rare abdominal wall hernia (<1 % incidence) that occurs through the obturator foramen, often in elderly, emaciated women. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the abdomen and pelvis is the diagnostic modality of choice, with a high accuracy of 78 %-100 %.

Case Presentation: An 84-year-old frail woman with COPD presented with generalized abdominal pain, abdominal distention, vomiting, and right thigh pain.

Background: The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) free flap reconstruction is a preferred breast reconstruction technique due to its muscle-sparing approach and patient satisfaction. However, donor-site complications, particularly wound dehiscence, remain a concern. Closed incision negative pressure wound therapy using wound vacuum assisted closure (VAC) systems may reduce these complications by enhancing perfusion and minimizing edema.

Background: Postoperative pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the most frequent postoperative complaint. To date, gallbladder extraction via the subxiphoid port (SXP) versus the supraumbilical port (SUP) is still controversial. Thus, the authors performed this randomized controlled trial to compare postoperative pain between the SXP and SUP for LC.
