Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation and involvement of the synovial membrane, causing joint damage and deformities. No effective drug treatment is available, and physical exercise has been utilized to alleviate the inflammatory processes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different exercise training protocols on Zymosan-induced RA inflammatory markers in the right knee of Wistar rats.

Denervation leads to severe atrophy of neuromuscular junction (NMJ) structure including decrease of the expression of fundamental proteins. Up to now, conventional suture has been the gold standard method used to correct this injury. Fibrin sealant is one of the alternatives proposed to optimize this method.

Objectives: The cellular therapy using adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) aims to improve tendon healing, considering that repaired tendons often result in a less resistant tissue. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of the ASCs combination with a low-level laser (LLL), an effective photobiostimulation for the healing processes.

Materials And Methods: Rats calcaneal tendons were divided into five groups: normal (NT), transected (T), transected and ASCs (SC) or LLL (L), or with ASCs and LLL (SCL).

Department of Structural and Functional Biology, Institute of Biology, University of Campinas⁻UNICAMP, Charles Darwin, s/n, CP 6109, 13083-970 Campinas, SP, Brazil.

Tissue engineering and cell-based therapy combine techniques that create biocompatible materials for cell survival, which can improve tendon repair. This study seeks to use a new fibrin sealant (FS) derived from the venom of , a biodegradable three-dimensional scaffolding produced from animal components only, associated with adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) for application in tendons injuries, considered a common and serious orthopedic problem. Lewis rats had tendons distributed in five groups: normal (N), transected (T), transected and FS (FS) or ASC (ASC) or with FS and ASC (FS + ASC).

This study presented a biosafety device for the hygienic storage of composite resin during restorative procedures in teaching clinics, RESTAURASAFE, and to compare the color stability, surface hardness, and degree of conversion of the composite resin made with the proposed device to those of conventionally made resins. Esthet-X HD composite was manipulated directly from the syringe, fractionated doses, dappen dish or RESTAURASAFE. Disc-shaped specimens were immersed in artificial saliva and coffee for 60 days and the color stability and the Vickers surface hardness were evaluated during 60 days.

The superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) connects the superficial digital flexor muscle to the digits and its main function is to participate in digit flexion. The SDFT presents different regions along its length, which adapt to different biomechanical forces. During growth and maturation, the tendon may present changes in the regions subjected to compression and tension, with variations in the composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM), in the arrangement of collagen fibers and cellularity.

Tendon injuries represent a clinical challenge in regenerative medicine because their natural repair process is complex and inefficient. The high incidence of tendon injuries is frequently associated with sports practice, aging, tendinopathies, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and the use of corticosteroids. The growing interest of scientists in using adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSC) in repair processes seems to be mostly due to their paracrine and immunomodulatory effects in stimulating specific cellular events.

Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Dermatology, School of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto, University of Sao Paulo (USP), Av. Bandeirantes, 3900. Monte Alegre, 14049-900, Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Diabetes can cause serious health complications, which can affect every organ of the body, including the skin. The molecular etiology has not yet been clarified for all diabetic skin conditions. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the changes of diabetes in skin compared to non-diabetic skin in rats.

Objective: To investigate the influence of educational activity in the school environment based on prescriptive and subjective oral health indicators.

Methods: Cross-sectional, comparative study involving students between 9 and 12 years of age, from schools that have educational activities and those that do not, designated schools A and B. The oral health indicators used were the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) and the Community Periodontal Index (CPITN).

InGaP 670-nm laser therapy combined with a hydroalcoholic extract of Solidago chilensis Meyen in burn injuries.

Lasers Med Sci

April 2015

Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences, Herminio Ometto University Center (UNIARARAS), Avenida Maximiliano Baruto, 500, Jardim Universitário, CEP 13607-339, Araras, SP, Brazil,

Therapies that accelerate the healing of burn injuries, improving the quality of life of the patient and reducing the cost of treatment are important. This study evaluated the effects of InGaP 670-nm laser therapy combined with a hydroalcoholic extract of Solidago chilensis leaves on burn wound healing in rats. Seventy-two rats were divided randomly into four groups: control untreated (C), treated with InGaP 670-nm laser with power density of 0.

December 2014

Department of Functional and Structural Biology, IB, State University of Campinas - UNICAMP, Av. Bertrand Russel, s/no Cx Postal 6109, PC 13083-865 Campinas, SP, Brazil.

The alterations due to aging in the peripheral nerves can affect the physiology of these structures. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to describe the activity of the MMP-2 and MMP-9, as well as the structure and composition of the extracellular matrix of the rat sciatic nerve during maturation and aging. Our results have shown that the extracellular matrix of the sciatic nerve of 30-, 180- and 730-day-old Wistar rats present ultrastructural, morphometrical and biochemical changes during aging.

Skin-wound healing is a complex and dynamic biological process involving inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Recent studies have shown that statins are new therapeutical options because of their actions, such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, on vasodilation, endothelial dysfunction and neoangiogenesis, which are independent of their lipid-lowering action. Our aim was to investigate the effect of atorvastatin on tissue repair after acute injury in healthy animals.

Malocclusions are generally treated in adolescents and adults, but they are established at an early age. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of malocclusions in a young Brazilian population. The sample included 926 children, 8 to 12 years old, attending 5 public schools in the state of Goias, Brazil The type of occlusion was visually determined during the oral exam and statistical analysis, Chi-square test, was performed to correlate the prevalence of malocclusion with gender and with age.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the shear bond strength of an adhesive restorative system on sound and demineralized dentin after the use of a papain-based agent.

Methods: Forty human dentin slabs were randomly distributed into 4 groups: (1) sound dentin slabs that received an application of papain-based gel (N=10); (2) sound dentin slabs that did not receive a papain-based gel application (N=10); (3) demineralized slabs that received an application of the agent (N=10); and (4) demineralized slabs that did not receive an application of the agent (N=10). After manual excavation and use of the chemomechanical agent, the slabs were restored with a total etch adhesive system and microhybrid resin composite.
