Nutritional risk, nutrition plan and risk of death in older health care service users with chronic diseases: A register-based cohort study.

Clin Nutr ESPEN

June 2023

Department of Research and Innovation, Helse Fonna Local Health Authority, P.O. Box 2170, NO-5504 Haugesund, Norway.

Background And Aims: Nutritional risk in older health care service users is a well-known challenge. Nutritional risk screening and individualised nutrition plans are common strategies for preventing and treating malnutrition. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether nutritional risk is associated with an increased risk of death and whether a nutrition plan to those at nutritional risk could reduce this potential risk of death in community health care service users over 65 years of age.

This study primarily aimed to report the outcome of the arthroscopic cancellous bone grafting technique for treating scaphoid nonunion. The secondary aim was to compare the bone union rate and time, and the ability to correct the angulation of the scaphoid, between arthroscopically treated patients ( = 27), and patients treated with open cancellous bone grafting ( = 27). Nine surgeons (two in the arthroscopic and seven in the open group) with Level III experience operated on the patients.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in eight Ghanaian communities to investigate the extent of intestinal colonization with 3-generation cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales. The study collected faecal samples and corresponding lifestyle data from 736 healthy residents to assess the occurrence of cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, with a focus on genotypes of plasmid-mediated ESBLs, AmpCs, and carbapenemases. The results showed that 371 participants (50.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) comprising deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Short-term immobility-related conditions are a major risk factor for the development of VTE. Paradoxically, long-term immobilized free-ranging hibernating brown bears and paralyzed spinal cord injury (SCI) patients are protected from VTE.

Long-Term Training Increases Atrial Fibrillation Sustainability in Standardbred Racehorses.

J Cardiovasc Transl Res

October 2023

Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Højbakkegaard Allé 5, 2630, Taastrup, Denmark.

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is more common in athletes, but the reasons behind it are still unclear.
  • A study on Standardbred racehorses showed that trained horses sustained AF longer after induced tachypacing, but had no significant differences in atrial size or inflammation compared to untrained horses.
  • Untrained horses exhibited greater complexity in AF between the atria, whereas trained horses did not show this difference, indicating varied mechanisms of AF in relation to athletic training.

Aims: To evaluate a family-focused intervention for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) in addition to conventional care and to establish its effect on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), anxiety, depression, AF symptoms, and family support.

Background: AF is a widespread heart disease affecting the well-being of patients and their family members physically and psychologically. Supporting patients and their family members could potentially facilitate regaining family strength and improve HRQoL.

Introduction: Chronic lung disease is common among people living with HIV (PLWH). We hypothesised that PLWH receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) have faster lung function decline than matched controls.

Methods: We performed a prospective matched cohort study by including ART-treated PLWH from the Copenhagen Co-morbidity in HIV Infection Study (n=705) and the INSIGHT Strategic Timing of Antiretroviral Treatment Pulmonary Substudy (n=425) and frequency matched population controls from the Copenhagen General Population Study (n=2895) in a 1:3 ratio.

Aims: Outcomes after myocardial infarction (MI) improved during recent decades alongside better risk factor management and implementation of guideline-recommended treatments. However, it is unknown whether this applies to stable patients who are event-free 1 year after MI.

Methods And Results: Using nationwide Danish registries, we included all patients with first-time MI during 2000-17 who survived 1 year free from bleeding and cardiovascular events (n = 82 108, median age 64 years, 68.

March 2023

Department of Cardiology, Odense University Hospital, Odense Denmark; Department of Clinical Research, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark; Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Odense University Hospital, Odense, Denmark. Electronic address:

Background: With increasing survival rates following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), knowledge on return to everyday life, including return to work, should be getting increasing attention.

Objectives: To i) describe patterns of labor market affiliation up to 12 months after discharge among a workforce population and to, ii) investigate the association between clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, self-reported health at discharge and a composite endpoint of prolonged sick leave and leaving the workforce after 3 and 12 months.

Methods: Data from the national survey, DenHeart, were used, including measures of self-reported health: HeartQoL and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), combined with register-based follow-up.

Aims: It remains unknown whether the consistently observed increase in haematocrit with sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors is caused by diuresis-associated haemoconcentration or increased erythropoiesis. We aimed to investigate the early effect of empagliflozin on erythropoiesis and iron metabolism in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Methods And Results: The Empire HF was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

Background Guideline-recommended disease-modifying pharmacological therapies for heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction are underutilized, particularly among elderly patients. We studied the association of age in adherence and discontinuation of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ACEi/ARB), β-blockers (BB), and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists. Methods and Results Patients with a first heart failure diagnosis who had initiated ACEi/ARB and BB within 120 days of presentation were included from nationwide registries and divided into 3 age groups: <65 years (reference), 65 to 79, and ≥80.
