J Surg Res

December 2024

Faculty of Biology, Medicine, and Health, The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK; Department of Colorectal Surgery, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester, UK.

Introduction: Anal acoustic reflectometry (AAR), a novel test of anal sphincter function, was shown to predict a successful trial phase of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) for fecal incontinence. This follow-up study aims to explore if AAR can also predict short- and long-term SNM outcomes at less than and more than 5 y, respectively.

Methods: Outcome data were reviewed from a prospectively managed database.

Article Synopsis
  • High birth weight and gestational diabetes are linked to an increased risk of obstetric anal sphincter injury during childbirth, as previous studies suggest.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of twelve cohort studies showed a slightly higher prevalence of this injury in women with gestational diabetes (2.40%) compared to those without (2.31%).
  • The findings indicate that primiparous women (first-time mothers) with gestational diabetes have a significantly higher risk of injury (6.65%) compared to their counterparts without diabetes, while this risk is not as pronounced in multiparous women (those who have given birth before).

Article Synopsis
  • Assessing measles risk in infants 6-12 months is crucial, but there's limited data on ELISA tests for those under 9 months.
  • A study used a commercial ELISA kit to evaluate measles immunity in infants aged 5-7 months, comparing results with the more complex PRNT method at various time points after vaccination.
  • Findings showed low correlation between ELISA and PRNT results, with ELISA often underestimating immunity, indicating a need for more accurate testing to prevent vaccine failures during outbreaks.*

Three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) is currently the preferred method for monitoring left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in cancer patients receiving potentially cardiotoxic anti-neoplastic therapy. In Denmark, however, the traditional standard for LVEF monitoring has been rooted in nuclear medicine departments utilizing equilibrium radionuclide angiography (ERNA). Although ERNA remains a principal modality, there is an emerging trend towards the adoption of echocardiography for this purpose.

Recently, an antibody which inhibits the glycoprotein A repetitions predominant (GARP)-mediated release of active transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) from the TGFβ propeptide latency-associated peptide (LAP) showed preclinical activity in a murine model of the chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). Consequently, we investigated the expression of the immunosuppressive molecules LAP and GARP on peripheral blood lymphocytes from 56 MPN patients and 11 healthy donors (HD). We found that lymphocytes from patients with MPN express higher levels of LAP and GARP with no strong differences found between the different MPN diagnoses.
