Pseudospin Symmetry and Microscopic Origin of Shape Coexistence in the ^{78}Ni Region: A Hint from Lifetime Measurements.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2018

Instituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, I-35020 Legnaro, Italy.

Lifetime measurements of excited states of the light N=52 isotones ^{88}Kr, ^{86}Se, and ^{84}Ge have been performed, using the recoil distance Doppler shift method and VAMOS and AGATA spectrometers for particle identification and gamma spectroscopy, respectively. The reduced electric quadrupole transition probabilities B(E2;2^{+}→0^{+}) and B(E2;4^{+}→2^{+}) were obtained for the first time for the hard-to-reach ^{84}Ge. While the B(E2;2^{+}→0^{+}) values of ^{88}Kr, ^{86}Se saturate the maximum quadrupole collectivity offered by the natural valence (3s, 2d, 1g_{7/2}, 1h_{11/2}) space of an inert ^{78}Ni core, the value obtained for ^{84}Ge largely exceeds it, suggesting that shape coexistence phenomena, previously reported at N≲49, extend beyond N=50.

It is well known that monitoring of radioactivity released from nuclear medicine departments is necessary to ensure the radiological safety of patients and personnel. Unfortunately, equipment for air sampling is often expensive, loud and is not suitable to use in hospitals. Our goal was to find cheap and simple system for passive monitoring of I activity concentration in the air of nuclear medicine departments.

The inter- and intra-molecular interactions as they evolve in the course of glassy solidification are studied by broadband dielectric-and Fourier-transform infrared-spectroscopy for oligomeric derivatives of poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives, namely, poly(ethylene glycol) phenyl ether acrylate and poly(ethylene glycol) dibenzoate in the bulk and under confinement in nanoporous silica having mean pore diameters 4, 6, and 8 nm, with native and silanized inner surfaces. Analyzing the spectral positions and the oscillator strengths of specific IR absorption bands and their temperature dependencies enables one to trace the changes in the intra-molecular potentials and to compare it with the dielectrically determined primarily inter-molecular dynamics. Special emphasis is given to the calorimetric glass transition temperature T and T ≈ 1.

The ratio of branching fractions R(D^{*-})≡B(B^{0}→D^{*-}τ^{+}ν_{τ})/B(B^{0}→D^{*-}μ^{+}ν_{μ}) is measured using a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb^{-1}. For the first time, R(D^{*-}) is determined using the τ-lepton decays with three charged pions in the final state. The B^{0}→D^{*-}τ^{+}ν_{τ} yield is normalized to that of the B^{0}→D^{*-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{+} mode, providing a measurement of B(B^{0}→D^{*-}τ^{+}ν_{τ})/B(B^{0}→D^{*-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{+})=1.

Inter-centre variability of CT-based stopping-power prediction in particle therapy: Survey-based evaluation.

Phys Imaging Radiat Oncol

April 2018

OncoRay - National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden - Rossendorf, Dresden, Germany.

Background And Purpose: Stopping-power ratios (SPRs) are used in particle therapy to calculate particle range in patients. The heuristic CT-to-SPR conversion (Hounsfield Look-Up-Table, HLUT), needed for treatment planning, depends on CT-scan and reconstruction parameters as well as the specific HLUT definition. To assess inter-centre differences in these parameters, we performed a survey-based qualitative evaluation, as a first step towards better standardisation of CT-based SPR derivation.

Jagiellonian University, Faculty of Chemistry, Department of General Chemistry, Gronostajowa 2, 30-387, Kraków, Poland. Electronic address:

Cyclosporin A (CsA), a hydrophobic peptide, mainly known for its immunosuppressant properties, has shown a broad range of biological activities, including antimalarial action. Since CsA was found to be active on membrane level, it was subjected for investigations involving membrane models. Our former studies on interactions between CsA and different membrane lipids using Langmuir monolayer technique indicated its affinity for sphingomyelin (SM).

Production of and in p-Pb collisions at TeV.

Eur Phys J C Part Fields

June 2017

Stefan Meyer Institut für Subatomare Physik (SMI), Vienna, Austria.

The transverse momentum distributions of the strange and double-strange hyperon resonances (, ) produced in p-Pb collisions at TeV were measured in the rapidity range for event classes corresponding to different charged-particle multiplicity densities, d/d. The mean transverse momentum values are presented as a function of d/d, as well as a function of the particle masses and compared with previous results on hyperon production. The integrated yield ratios of excited to ground-state hyperons are constant as a function of d/d.

Spin Dependence of η Meson Production in Proton-Proton Collisions Close to Threshold.

Phys Rev Lett

January 2018

Institut für Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich, Germany.

Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high polarization degree of the proton beam of COSY, the reaction p[over →]p→ppη has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power A_{y}. The angular distribution of A_{y} is determined with the precision improved by more than 1 order of magnitude with respect to previous results, allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q=15  MeV, signaling s-wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves.
