Search for Rare Decays of D^{0} Mesons into Two Muons.

Phys Rev Lett

July 2023

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Manchester, Manchester, United Kingdom.

A search for the very rare D^{0}→μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. The search is optimized for D^{0} mesons from D^{*+}→D^{0}π^{+} decays but is also sensitive to D^{0} mesons from other sources. No evidence for an excess of events over the expected background is observed.

The transverse-momentum (p_{T}) spectra and coalescence parameters B_{2} of (anti)deuterons are measured in p-p collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV for the first time in and out of jets. In this measurement, the direction of the leading particle with the highest p_{T} in the event (p_{T}^{lead}>5  GeV/c) is used as an approximation for the jet axis. The event is consequently divided into three azimuthal regions, and the jet signal is obtained as the difference between the toward region, that contains jet fragmentation products in addition to the underlying event (UE), and the transverse region, which is dominated by the UE.

An amplitude analysis of B^{-}→J/ψΛp[over ¯] decays is performed using 4400 signal candidates selected on a data sample of pp collisions recorded at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. A narrow resonance in the J/ψΛ system, consistent with a pentaquark candidate with strangeness, is observed with high significance. The mass and the width of this new state are measured to be 4338.

The Mn lattice in olivine chalcogenide MnSiX (X = S, Se) compounds forms a sawtooth, which is of special interest in magnetism owing to the possibility of realizing flat bands in magnon spectra, a key component in magnonics. In this work, we investigate the MnSiX olivines using magnetic susceptibility, and X-ray and neutron diffraction. We have determined the average and local crystal structures of MnSiS and MnSiSe using synchrotron X-ray, neutron diffraction, and X-ray total scattering data followed by Rietveld and pair distribution function analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • Vibrational spectroscopy is highlighted as a crucial method for analyzing amorphous silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) materials, particularly through Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy.
  • The study focuses on modifying SiOC glasses with phosphate ions while introducing co-doping ions like aluminum and boron to stabilize these materials, resulting in samples like SiPOC, SiPAlOC, and SiPBOC.
  • Detailed structural analysis using various spectroscopic techniques confirmed that the modified SiOC materials retained similar structural properties to unmodified versions and exhibited potential for use as bioactive coatings on metallic implants.

This work is dedicated to the development of new types of composite thermoluminescent detectors based on the single crystalline films of Ce-doped GdAlO perovskite and Mn-doped YAlO and (LuY)AlO:Mn perovskites as well as Ce and Pr-doped YAlO single crystal substrates. These detectors were obtained using the Liquid Phase Epitaxy growth method from the melt solution based on the PbO-BO fluxes. Such composite detectors can by applied for the simultaneous registration of different components of mixed ionization fluxes using the differences between the thermoluminescent glow curves, recorded from the film and crystal parts of epitaxial structures.

The reduced transition probabilities for the 4_{1}^{+}→2_{1}^{+} and 2_{1}^{+}→0_{1}^{+} transitions in ^{92}Mo and ^{94}Ru and for the 4_{1}^{+}→2_{1}^{+} and 6_{1}^{+}→4_{1}^{+} transitions in ^{90}Zr have been determined in this experiment making use of a multinucleon transfer reaction. These results have been interpreted on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations in the f_{5/2}, p_{3/2}, p_{1/2}, and g_{9/2} proton valence space. Only the combination of extensive lifetime information and large scale shell-model calculations allowed the extent of the seniority conservation in the N=50 g_{9/2} orbital to be understood.

The first study of the angular distribution of μ^{+}μ^{-} pairs produced in the forward rapidity region via the Drell-Yan reaction pp→γ^{*}/Z+X→ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}+X is presented, using data collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1  fb^{-1}. The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity.

The impact of selenium on the course of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) was mainly assessed by monitoring the titer of antithyroid autoantibodies in most of the studies conducted hitherto. On the other hand, the imbalance in activity of T cells such as Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg may be relevant in the pathogenesis of this disease. Hence, the assessment of changes in the secretion of cytokines by these cells during selenium supplementation in patients with HT seems to be an important issue and was the main goal of this study.

Quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong force, describes interactions of coloured quarks and gluons and the formation of hadronic matter. Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. Particles with an alternative quark content are known as exotic states.

The polarization of the Λ and Λ[over ¯] hyperons along the beam (z) direction, P_{z}, has been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main contribution to P_{z} comes from elliptic flow-induced vorticity and can be characterized by the second Fourier sine coefficient P_{z,s2}=⟨P_{z}sin(2φ-2Ψ_{2})⟩, where φ is the hyperon azimuthal emission angle and Ψ_{2} is the elliptic flow plane angle.

Two narrow resonant states are observed in the Λ_{b}^{0}K^{-}π^{+} mass spectrum using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6  fb^{-1}. The minimal quark content of the Λ_{b}^{0}K^{-}π^{+} system indicates that these are excited Ξ_{b}^{0} baryons. The masses of the Ξ_{b}(6327)^{0} and Ξ_{b}(6333)^{0} states are m[Ξ_{b}(6327)^{0}]=6327.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines charged particle production in proton-lead and proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5 TeV, focusing on how it varies with pseudorapidity and transverse momentum.
  • It finds that charged particle production is suppressed in proton-lead collisions compared to proton-proton in the forward region, while there's an increase in the backward region for higher transverse momentum values.
  • These findings provide valuable insights into nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs) and saturation models, especially at low parton momentum fractions down to 10^{-6}.

Article Synopsis
  • This article discusses the analysis of groomed jet substructure in proton-proton (pp) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions using the ALICE detector at a collision energy of 5.02 TeV.
  • The study employs a soft drop grooming algorithm to isolate hard parton splittings and measures the groomed jet momentum splitting fraction and radius, revealing distinct behavior in jet structure under different collision conditions.
  • Notably, a narrowing of the groomed jet radius distribution in Pb-Pb collisions suggests changes in jet angular structure due to quark-gluon plasma, while no significant differences are observed in momentum splitting fractions, contributing valuable insights into jet energy-loss mechanisms.
