A dentigerous cyst (DC) is the most common developmental cystic lesion of the jaws. Histologically, these cysts derive from the odontogenic epithelium that includes the reduced enamel epithelium, epithelial cell rests of Serres, and epithelial cell rests of Malassez. Radiographically, DCs are usually presented as well-defined radiolucencies associated with the crown of an unerupted tooth at the level of the cementoenamel junction (CEJ).

The current landscape of artificial intelligence in oral and maxillofacial surgery- a narrative review.

Objective: This narrative review aims to explore the current applications and future prospects of AI within the subfields of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS), emphasizing its potential benefits and anticipated challenges.

Methods: A detailed review of the literature was conducted to evaluate the role of AI in oral and maxillofacial surgery. All domains within OMS were reviewed with a focus on diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic interventions.

The efficacy of facial skeletal treatment options in the management of obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by intermittent cessation of breathing during sleep due to the collapse of oropharyngeal tissues. This review examines the role of craniofacial growth in OSA and evaluates the efficacy of orthodontic and orthognathic treatments. Maxillary expansion and orthognathic surgery have demonstrated significant reductions in sleep apneas and hypopneas, although they do not consistently achieve cure levels, particularly in the presence of obesity and connective tissue disorders.

Finite element analysis of stress distribution in cantilever resin-bonded zirconia fixed dental prosthesis and periodontal tissue with alveolar bone loss.

Purpose: To compare the stress distribution in loaded zirconia resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) and periodontal tissue using finite element analysis, considering reduced alveolar bone levels and the number of retainers.

Methods: A human skull was micro-CT scanned. Three framework designs were tested: a 2-unit RBFDP using the maxillary left central incisor (#21) as an abutment, another using a canine (#23), and a 3-unit RBFDP using both #21 and #23.

Objective: This objective was to assess if the current practice of interfacility transfer and immediate specialty consult is justified by the rate of surgical repair for isolated medial orbital wall fractures.

Study Design: This is a retrospective descriptive study utilizing the records of all patients with isolated medial orbital wall fractures who presented to the ED at Boston Medical Center from January 2014 to December 2022. A descriptive analysis was completed.

Objective: To test whether parent-targeted oral health text (OHT) messages outperform child wellness text (CWT) messages on pediatric caries increment and oral health behaviors among underserved children attending pediatric well-child visits.

Design, Setting, And Participants: The parallel randomized clinical trial, Interactive Parent-Targeted Text Messaging in Pediatric Clinics to Reduce Caries Among Urban Children (iSmile), included participants who were recruited during pediatric medical clinic visits at 4 sites in Boston, Massachusetts, that serve low-income and racially and ethnically diverse (herein, underserved) populations.

Background: Smartphone apps can be used to monitor chronic conditions and offer opportunities for self-assessment conveniently at home. However, few digital studies include older adults.

A variety of surgical treatments are used for odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) depending on the clinical and radiographic presentation.

Objectives: To explore physiotherapists' experiences and perceived acceptability of delivering a bracing intervention for knee osteoarthritis (OA) in the 'PROvision of braces for Patients with knee OA' (PROP OA) randomised controlled trial.

Method: Semi-structured telephone interviews with consenting physiotherapists who received the PROP OA training programme and delivered the knee bracing intervention (advice, information and exercise instruction plus knee brace matched to patients' clinical and radiographic presentation and with adherence support). Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim.

Pulpal response to partial pulpotomy versus full pulpotomy procedures in puppies: An experimental study.

Background: A Partial pulpotomy technique is an alternative choice of treatment for immature permanent teeth with exposed vital pulps. This study aimed to compare the histopathological pulpal response of the primary teeth of puppies after partial pulpotomy and full pulpotomy using mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).

Materials And Methods: 72 primary premolars from experimental puppies aged 6-8 weeks were equally divided into test and control groups, as MTA partial pulpotomy (MTA-PP) and MTA full pulpotomy (MTA-FP).

System Dynamics Modeling of Caries Severity States in Long-Term Care.

Dental caries among long-term care (LTC) residents is a persistent and complex problem driven by social and structural factors. Systems thinking may be useful in considering novel approaches to reducing disease. This study aimed to develop a system dynamics model to simulate the progression of dentate older adults in LTC through caries severity states and estimate the effects of 3 intervention scenarios on the progression of caries: preventive topical fluoride (TF), arrest of caries with silver diamine fluoride (SDF), and a combination of TF and SDF.

Exploring the oral health status of children living with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE): A caregiver described self-report.

Introduction: Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) is a birth complication due to loss of oxygen flow, resulting in a wide range of physical and cognitive differences often requiring support from multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Despite this population's increased need, little is known about their oral health status and the role of the dentist as a member of the care team.

Methods: A 32-item oral health questionnaire was shared to 8700 members within the patient advocacy non-profit, Hope for HIE's, Facebook group.

Shape analysis of the craniofacial skeleton in children prenatally exposed to anticonvulsant medications using geometric morphometrics.

Children exposed prenatally to antiepileptic drugs may have a typical facies characterized by midfacial retrusion, a short nose, and anteverted nares. Our aim was to determine whether the shape of the maxilla was altered in its sagittal displacement, or whether the defect in the underlying articulation with the cranial base was responsible for the appearance of midface retrusion. Our hypothesis was that the sphenoid bone as well as the maxilla and other bones in the cranial base were affected by the anticonvulsant medication.

Feasibility of using two generative AI models for teeth reconstruction.

Objectives: This feasibility study investigates the application of artificial intelligence (AI) models, specifically transformer-based (TM) and diffusion-based (DM) models, for the reconstruction of single and multiple missing teeth.

Methods: A dataset of 129 digitized models was utilized to create both TM and DM models. Single and multiple missing teeth were artificially generated.

Introduction: Obesity is associated with increased periodontal disease prevalence and incidence. This retrospective cohort study examined whether body mass index (BMI) is an effect modifier of periodontal treatment outcomes in patients attending an urban dental school clinic.

Methods: Data were extracted from electronic health records of 344 patients at a large urban dental school clinic who had at least 1 tooth with a probing pocket depth (PD) ≥5 mm at baseline and who subsequently received nonsurgical periodontal treatment.

Background: Dental implants are an effective treatment option for edentulism, which poses a substantial barrier to oral health. The quality of the bone at the implant site may have an impact on the outcome of implant therapy. Evaluating the Impact of Prosthetic Material Choices on the Clinical Outcomes of Implant-Supported Restorations.

Background: By resolving the difficulties associated with missing teeth, implant-supported restorations have emerged as a key component of contemporary dentistry. The choice of prosthetic materials is crucial in establishing the durability and clinical efficacy of these restorations.

Methods: A prospective design was used at a tertiary care hospital with 150 patients receiving implant-supported restorations.

Responding to Interprofessional Microaggressions: Bystander Training-A Virtual Simulation Curriculum for Internal Medicine Residents.

Introduction: Literature demonstrates the detrimental impact of discrimination and microaggressions at personal and institutional levels in the health care workplace. Residents in our program requested curricula to help with addressing manifestations of bias. In response, we designed and implemented an adaptable and reproducible 4-hour virtual simulation session aimed at helping residents identify and constructively respond to microaggressions.

Effect of machining damage on the surface roughness and flexural strength of CAD-CAM materials.

Statement Of Problem: Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials are available for different types of restorations. However, the longevity of the material is affected by chipping, milling damage, flexural strength, and surface roughness, and a standard edge chipping test or standardized measurements are unavailable for monitoring edge chipping of rotary instrument-milled materials.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to analyze the surface roughness and edge chipping of different CAD-CAM diamond rotary instrument-milled dental material bars, correlate the effect of machining damage with material strength, and compare the flexural strength of rotary instrument-milled and sectioned CAD-CAM blocks.

Single-cell analysis of peri-implant gingival tissue to assess implant biocompatibility and immune response.

Purpose: The innate immune response, particularly the reaction of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs), is crucial in shaping the outcomes of chronic inflammation, fibrosis, or osseointegration following biomaterial implantation. Peri-implantitis or peri-implant mucositis, inflammatory conditions linked to dental implants, pose a significant threat to implant success. We developed a single-cell analysis approach using a murine model to assess the immune response to implant materials, offering a practical screening tool for potential dental implants.
