Objectives: To investigate the role of the BNIP3-PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in mediating the inhibitory effect of Decoction (BYHWT) on mitochondrial autophagy in human synovial fibroblasts from rheumatoid arthritis patients (FLS-RA) cultured under a hypoxic condition.

Methods: Forty normal Wistar rats were randomized into two groups (=20) for daily gavage of BYHWT or distilled water for 7 days to prepare BYHWT-medicated or control sera. FLS-RA were cultured in routine condition or exposed to hypoxia (10% O) for 24 h wigh subsequent treatment with IL-1β, followed by treatment with diluted BYHWT-medicated serum (5%, 10% and 20%) or control serum.

ZHANG Zhongjing School of Chinese Medicine, Rheumatology and Immunology, Nanyang Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Nanyang 473004, China.

Objectives: To investigate the protective effect of Formula (YYHT) against high glucose-induced injury in mouse renal podocytes (MPC5 cells) and the possible mechanism.

Methods: Adult Wistar rats were treated with 19, 38, and 76 g/kg YYHT or saline via gavage for 7 days to prepare YYHT-medicated or blank sera for treatment of MPC5 cells cultured in high glucose (30 mmol/L) prior to transfection with a miR-21a-5p inhibitor or a miR-21a-5p mimic. The changes in miR-21a-5p expressions and the mRNA levels of FoxO1, PINK1, and Parkin in the treated cells were detected with qRT-PCR, and the protein levels of nephrin, podocin, FoxO1, PINK1, and Parkin were detected with Western blotting.

Nonacademic predictors of China medical licensing examination.

BMC Med Educ

January 2025

Department of Radiology and Tianjin Key Lab of Functional Imaging and Tianjin Institute of Radiology and State Key Laboratory of Experimental Hematology, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin, 300052, China.

Background: National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) is the entrance exam for medical practice in China, and its general medical knowledge test (GMKT) evaluates abilities of medical students to comprehensively apply medical knowledge to clinical practice. This study aimed to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance, which would benefit medical schools in designing appropriate strategies and techniques to facilitate the transition from medical students to qualified medical practitioners.

Methods: In 1202 medical students, we conducted the deletion-substitution-addition (DSA) and structural equation model (SEM) analyses to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance from 98 candidate variables including early life events, physical conditions, psychological and personality assessments, cognitive abilities, and socioeconomic conditions.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) on vascular luminal dilatational remodeling (VLDR) following simple balloon angioplasty.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from patients diagnosed with intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS), who were treated exclusively with balloon angioplasty at Henan Provincial People's Hospital between June 2019 and April 2023. Inverse probability weighting (IPW) was used to create balanced cohorts of patients who underwent drug-coated balloon angioplasty (DCBA) and plain old balloon angioplasty (POBA).

Background: The increasing prevalence of myopia among Chinese children and adolescents, especially at younger ages, has emerged as a significant concern in recent years. Pre-myopia is a key period for myopia prevention and control in children and adolescents. Previous studies suggested auricular acupressure (AA) therapy might offer a viable approach to prevent and slow down myopia progression.

Biased µ-opioid receptor (MOR) agonists enhance pain relief by selectively activating G protein-coupled receptor signaling and minimizing β-arrestin-2 activation, resulting in fewer side effects. This multicenter Phase II/III trial evaluated the optimal dosage, efficacy, and safety of SHR8554, a biased MOR agonist, for postoperative pain management following orthopedic surgery. In Phase II, 121 patients were divided into four groups to receive varying patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) doses of SHR8554 or morphine.

"Double-Gene" Small Molecule as Guest Component Promotes the Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells Beyond 19.5 .

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering/, Film Energy Chemistry for Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory (FEC), Nanchang University, Nanchang, 330031, Jiangxi, PR China.

Introduction of a guest component into the active layer is a simple yet effective approach to enhance the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Despite various guest components successfully employed in the OSCs, efficient guest components require deliberate design and ingenious inspiration, which still remains a big challenge for developing high performance OSCs. In this work, we propose a concept of "structural gene" engineering to create a new "double-gene" small molecule (L-DBDD) by simply combining the structures of both donor PM6 and acceptor L8-BO.

Up to half of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, for which effective treatment options are lacking, resulting in a poor prognosis. Over the past few years, the combination of immune checkpoint inhibitors and anti-angiogenic targeted therapy has proven highly efficacious in treating advanced HCC, significantly extending patients' survival and providing a potential for sequential curative surgery. After sequential curative hepatectomy or liver transplantation following conversion therapy, patients can receive long-term survival benefits.
