Objective: A meta-analysis of case-control studies was conducted to assess the risk of birth defects in offspring in China associated with maternal active and passive smoking and paternal smoking.
Methods: Four electronic databases were searched for qualified research up to December 2023. A Random-effect model or fixed-effect model was used to calculate the overall comprehensive risk estimates; and the relationship between parental smoking and the risk of birth defects in different periods of pregnancy.

Pediatric monogenetic diseases encompass a spectrum of debilitating neurological disorders that affect infants and children, often resulting in profound cognitive and motor impairments. Gene replacement therapy holds immense promise in addressing the underlying genetic defects responsible for these conditions. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors have emerged as a leading platform for delivering therapeutic genes due to their safety profile and ability to transduce various cell types, including neurons.

To explore the long-term prognosis and related factors of neonates and infants meningitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae. The Clinical data of neonates and small infants with Streptococcus agalactiae meningitis admitted to the Children's Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 2015 to May 2022 were retrospectively collected, and long-term follow-up of neurological development was conducted for the patients, with a follow-up period of ≥18 months. According to long-term neurological prognosis indicators, the patients were divided into good prognosis group and poor prognosis group, and the multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the factors affecting the long-term prognosis of the patients.

Objective: To retrospectively analyze the clinical characteristics and independent risk factors of severe influenza combined with febrile seizures, and to provide more basis for early clinical intervention.
Methods: A total of 161 children with severe influenza were collected as study subjects and divided into convulsive (FC) group (40 cases) and non-convulsive (NFC) group (121 cases) according to whether they had febrile seizures. The demographic characteristics and clinical data of the two groups were analyzed.

Neurodegenerative diseases pose a significant health burden globally, with limited treatment options available. Among the various cell types involved in the pathogenesis of these disorders, microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system, play a pivotal role. Dysregulated microglial activation contributes to neuroinflammation and neuronal damage, making them an attractive target for therapeutic intervention.

Background: Transient neonatal diabetes mellitus (TNDM) is a rare form of diabetes mellitus that usually presents within the first 6 mo of life. Patients often enter remission within several months, although relapse can occur later in life. Mutations in the gene, which encodes the sulfonylurea receptor 1 of the ATP-sensitive potassium channel in pancreatic beta cells, are associated with TNDM and permanent neonatal diabetes.

Background: The global increase in the aging population presents considerable challenges, particularly regarding cognitive impairment, a major concern for public health. This study investigates the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a measure of insulin resistance, and the risk of cognitive impairment in the elderly.
Methods: This prospective cohort study enrolled 2,959 participants aged 65 and above from the 2015 and 2020 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS).

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-bound -quinodimethane, served as a nucleophile, has occupied an important position for constructing various all-carbon or heterocyclic compounds and attracted increasing attention for the functionalization of benzylic carbon of aromatic aldehydes, whereas the mechanistic studies on the generation and transformations of dienolate intermediate are rare. In the present study, the mechanism of activation/transformation of aldehyde catalyzed by NHC was theoretically studied using the density functional theory (DFT) method. Based on the calculations, the nucleophilic addition process is the stereoselectivity-determining step with -configured product being generated preferentially.

The human gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem that plays a crucial role in promoting the interaction between the body and its environment. It has been increasingly recognized that the gut microbiota has diverse physiological functions. Recent studies have shown a close association between the gut microbiota and the development of certain tumors, including leukemia.

Background: Radiation-induced brain injury is a neurological condition resulting from radiotherapy for malignant tumors, with its underlying pathogenesis still not fully understood. Current hypotheses suggest that immune cells, particularly the excessive activation of microglia in the central nervous system and the migration of peripheral immune cells into the brain, play a critical role in initiating and progressing the injury. This review aimed to summarize the latest advances in the cellular and molecular mechanisms and the therapeutic potential of microglia in radiation-induced brain injury.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare condition predominantly affecting young children. Activation of the MAPK pathway has offered key new insights into the pathogenesis of LCH; however, the precise mechanisms underlying its occurrence and development are still far from being completely elucidated. There is still a relapse/reactivation rate in patients with multisystem LCH.

Background: Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a multisystem genetic disorder, and cases caused by variants in the structural maintenance of chromosomes protein 3 (SMC3) gene are uncommon. Here, we report two cases of CdLS associated with novel pathogenic variants in SMC3 from two Chinese families.
Methods: Clinical presentations of two patients with CdLS were evaluated, and specimens from the patients and other family members were collected for Trio-based whole-exome sequencing.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae necrotizing pneumonia (MPNP) has a long and severe disease course, which seriously threatens to jeopardize patients' lives and health. Early prediction is essential for good recovery and prognosis. In the present study, we retrospect 128 children with MPNP and 118 children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia combined with pulmonary consolidation to explore the predictive value of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in children with MPNP by propensity score matching method, multiple logistic regression analysis, dose-response analysis and decision curve analysis.
