  • Hyper-IgE syndromes and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis are rare immunodeficiency disorders with genetic defects that have been increasingly characterized in recent studies.
  • In a study of 275 patients, researchers identified 87 genetic mutations, achieving a diagnostic success rate of 28.4%, highlighting specific genes like DOCK8 and STAT3 associated with the conditions.
  • The most common symptoms included high IgE levels, eczema, and respiratory infections, with a recommendation for targeted panel sequencing as a cost-effective screening tool for genetic diagnosis in patients with these disorders.

The nutrient composition of breast milk alters during lactation, and maternal BMI adds more intricacy into its complexity. We aimed to compare leptin, ghrelin, adiponectin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels of pre-feed and post-feed breast milk in mothers with obesity and normal weight, and tried to determine their effects on infants' growth over weight for length -score. Twenty obese and twenty normal weight mothers with 2-month-old infants were enrolled in this case-control study.

Evaluation of Unscheduled Return Visits to the Pediatric Emergency Department and Risk Factors for Admission After Return Visit.

Pediatr Emerg Care

February 2022

From the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Ankara Child Health and Diseases Hematology Oncology Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences.

Objective: Unscheduled return visits to the emergency department (unscheduled RTED) increase both the workload and overcrowding in the emergency department. The aim in the present study is to identify the patient groups that require more careful and closer follow-up to reduce the rates of unscheduled RTED and hospital admissions after a return visit.

Methods: Among the patients admitted to the emergency department of our hospital between 2016 and 2017, those who made an unscheduled RTED within 72 hours after their first visit to the emergency department were evaluated retrospectively.

Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, A(∗)STAR, Biopolis, Singapore 138673, Singapore; Laboratory of Human Genetics & Therapeutics, Genome Institute of Singapore, A(∗)STAR, Biopolis, Singapore 138672, Singapore; Medical Genetics Department, Koç University School of Medicine, 34010 Istanbul, Turkey; Department of Paediatrics, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore 119228, Singapore. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the previously unknown function of the C2orf69 gene, linking it to a severe syndrome in 20 children characterized by fatal autoinflammation and progressive brain issues.
  • - Genetic analysis revealed homozygous loss-of-function variants in C2orf69, suggesting its key role in brain and immune system development through its influence on mitochondrial function and GBE1 levels.
  • - Experimentation on zebrafish demonstrated that inactivation of C2orf69 leads to early death due to epilepsy and brain inflammation, further supporting its crucial role in neural and immune health.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of physical exams and ultrasonography (US) in detecting glenohumeral instability in infants with brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI), using MRI as a benchmark.
  • In a prospective analysis of 42 infants, US and physical exams predicted glenohumeral instability with varying accuracy, while MRI confirmed instability in 15 out of 21 patients.
  • Results suggest that US, particularly when combined with dynamic evaluation, is a reliable screening method for assessing glenohumeral instability in these infants and shows comparable results to MRI.
